A parent insists his child wear a -2 diopter lens.   Message List

Dear Friends,

There is truly a problem with "us" the general public.

We DEMAND very, very sharp vision -- an will not
understand anyting else other than that.

I AGREE we must pass the DMV level test (20/40). But I
diagree that we should be "prescribed" in semi-darkness.

The difference can be a -2 diopter lens -- or no lens
at all.

I suspect that this child would PASS the DMV in Florida
and have functional vision.

I also believe that if he has support, (and did not
have his nose on the page) he could have had his
vision SLOWLY cleared to 20/40 with the plus and
other supportive methods.

But that in not going to happen.

It is true that the public is both ignorant, and
arrogant. (No insult intended) But the consequences
for this child will becomd final in a few years.

Best,

Otis

DrL> Otis is giving medical advice by telling folks that have myopia
to wear plus lenses. That is medical advice, which he is not
qualified to do.

Not only that, he's recommending putting *kids* into plus lenses. I
shudder to think what would have happened if I had sent my 6 year
old at -2D (his first prescription) to school with readers on and
told him to function normally, like read the blackboard or join in
sports!

I know that RT judges this is "right" -- and that is the end of
the discussion for this child. The situation will now
become permanent for this child.

There is indeed no "talking" to some parents about
this subject. Neil Brooks wins -- this child is loses! Tragic,
in my opinion.

Best,

Otis
