The Angry Myope
Subject: George is a dentist. He is about -4 diopters -- and
judges that the OD profession has an obligation to
discuss the "preventive plus" on the threshold -- when
it can be effective.

It is the OD's responsiblity to educate the public about
mypoia and prevention. That is there job and I believe they have
a moral and ethical repsonsibility to do so. We look to our eye
care professionals for advice and to sweep something to the
magnitude of myopia prevention under the carpet is wrong.
In dentistry the public comes to me for help and advice.
They are placing their trust in me to help them. I feel obligated
to offer all treatemnt options, to discuss the pros and cons of
all, offer the patient what I feel is best for them, and help them
attain that treatment. My patients are offered choices so the
decision is theirs to make, I don't make treatment decisions for
them while withholding other potential treamtent options.
To hear that OD's are putting their kids in plus lenses while
not offering that option to the rest of the public is wrong.
Amazing how the lack of caring about prevention permeates through
the OD's. If the public does not understand it is their job to
help them understand, just like it is my job in dentistry to do
the same.
Here is an example. Too many people a result of getting old
is the inevitable loss of your teeth. This is not the case.
Teeth are meant to last a lifetime and it is my responsibility to
instill this upon every one of my patients. I offer home care
instructions and etiology specific to each person. It is then
their decision to utilize the knowledge I have given them. If
they don't, they will have issues down the road and quite possibly
lose teeth.
Another example using dentistry is if someone is brushing too
hard. I can tell if there is toothbrush abrasion and inform the
patient of the consequences of said habit. Did the OD's do this
for you when they found out you were holding your nose too close
to the book? No, they did not.
So, to summize everything, "GIVE ME THE OPTION, AS THEY ARE
MY EYES. DON"T MAKE THE DECISION FOR ME."
