Subject: Astigmatism "correction" is almost NEVER NECESSARY.
Re: It is more cosmetic for the OD who prescribes it.

Here is the discussion:
Question> Is there a downside to the relaxing incisions? I think my
astigmatism is more problematical than my hyperopiz.
TyneroD> It's just that astigmatism isn't always "problematical." Sometimes it's
beneficial.
Here we have someone who is happy using the horizontal lines to read TV and
the vertical lines to read the newspaper. She may be unhappy when you
convert her to a perfect -1.12 sphere and neither the newspaper or the TV
are as "clear like they used to be."
It was my Mom who taught me this. She was -250+250 (or pl-250) all her adult ***
life and could never get used to glasses. Imagine my distress when I made
her the sharpest pair of glasses she ever had and she wouldn't wear them.
Question> I don't think I'm anywhere near needing a cataract operation, but
something in its favor is that I might be rid of my cursed astigmatism.
If your astigmatism is superimposed on high hyperopia, there's very little
to celebrate, except that maybe horizontal lines aren't "quite as bad" as
vertical. Neither are very good.
But Mom scored 20/25 at distance and near if we let her squint a little.

**** Astigmatism of +2.5 is a considered "high", yet she always passes the DMV
requirement.
Personally, if I have 20/25 vision, I am NOT going to wear any glasses for
distant vision.
