Dear Keith,
Subject: How to determine if 20/50 is a medical or
a refractive-status (preventable) problem.
Of all the issues that did concern me is was a person who
would attempt to use the plus -- without a "prior" medical check.
About 95 percent of us begin losing our distant vision because of
the incredible amount of "nose on the page -- nose on the monitor"
work we are doing.
There is a very slight chance that 20/50 vision MIGHT be a
medical issue.
The way you could check this yourself would be to obtain a -1
diopter lens (for $20) and verify that you could read 20/20 through
that
minus. If you can, then you don't have a medical problem. The
reason for the negative refractive state is simply the previous
years you were in school, and the fact that the natural
eye controls its refractive state to its average visual
environment.
It is tragic that the OD can't be "bigger" than that -- and
just spell-out this situation to us. But that would make YOU
RESPONSIBLE and NOT THEM.
That is the type of responsibility I would want. I can
"work" that issue. I would GLADLY pay for the advice (at his
professional rate), and then go home and work to "clear" my vision
to better-than 20/40.
So that is what should become a "changed" relationship to a
"doctor" in the future -- in my opinion.
But until that day comes, you are necessarily forced
to figure these issues out for yourself, and act to
protect your distant vision under your own control.
