Std2040.txt
Dear Morgan,
In working on "vision clearing" and going
"cold turkey" it is essential that you
be close to meeting these visual-acuity standards.
I know you wish to get to 20/20 -- and I support
that goal. But first LEGALLY get rid of the
minus lens by meeting or exceeding these requirements.
Note that the FAA reqires 20/40 (not 20/20) for the
3rd class license.
Be wise about this subject. Vision clearing is
slow -- and getting rid of that minus is
the first step. The second step is to
pass the DMV. The last step is to pass
the 20/20 line. I hope this helps.

Subject: Preventive-plus as the second-opinion and
visual-acuity requirements.
You ask about the legal basis of plus-prevention.
You ask what the EXPERTS recommend. Here is the
recommendation of a professor of optometry. If you receive
"questions" about your daughter's use of the plus, then refer them
to this statement. The next issue is LEGAL VISUAL REQUIREMENTS
When the original standard was established -- reading 0.9 cm
6 meters -- it was found that this was "excessive". So the
standard was changed to reading 1.8 cm letters at 6 meters, or 3/4
inch letters at 20 feet.

STATEMENT OF THE PLUS-PREVENITVE SECOND-OPINION
It is clear that the collective common sense of the
profession has indicated the type of problem they face and the
nature of the expected solution.
In the article "Trying to Get
Myopia into Focus", Dr. Theodore Grosvenor of the Houston
College of Optometry, insists that persistent close work causes
myopia. He also states that; "Once the eye has started to
stretch, it may be too late to keep it from stretching.

STATEMENT OF THE CHANGE OF LEGAL VISUAL ACUITY REQUIREMENTS
By Dr. Bates
Up to 1908 the United States required normal (20/20) vision
in recruits for its military service. In that year Bannister and
Shaw made some experiments from which they concluded that a
perfectly sharp image of the target was not necessary for good
shooting, and that, therefore, a visual acuity of 20/40 (the
equivalent in feet of 6/12 in metres), or even 20/70, in the
poorer eye only, was sufficient to make an efficient soldier.
This conclusion was not accepted without protest, but normal
vision (20/20) had become so rare that it probably seemed to those
in authority that there was no use insisting upon it; and the
visual standard for admission to the Army was accordingly lowered
to 20/40 for the better eye and 20/100 for the poorer...

Dear Vision-clearing friends,
Subject: Legal Standards are 20/70 to 20/40
Bates said throw away your glasses and SEE.
I agree with that desired goal. But the practical reality to
do so you must first PASS a legal visual-acuity requirement.
If your method achieves this goal (which you can verify
yourself) then you will truly have met Dr. Bates desired goal for
you.

§ 67.303 Eye.
Eye standards for a third class airman medical certificate are:
(a) Distant visual acuity of 20/40 or better in each eye
separately, with or without corrective lenses. If corrective
lenses (spectacles or contact lenses) are necessary for 20/40
vision, the person may be eligible only on the condition that
corrective lenses are worn while exercising the privileges of
an airman certificate.

Most of the other states require naked eye vision of 20/40 to
pass the DMV. Normally written at 20/40 with both eyes, or 20/40
in the better eye. Reference:

A line is considered to be "passed" if you correctly "guess"
1/2 the letters correctly.
