Subject: Brain Foods Make You Think Differently for Back-to-school
tawantjmhaqb
Offline Offline
Send Email Send Email

Students might start thinking a little differently, once they learn about brain
foods, and how they can help their concentration and make their school work
easier.
The most important meal of the day is breakfast. Kids who eat breakfast
consistently do better on tests. Getting better grades is important, but making
time to eat breakfast is tough. "If you don't have time for a sit down
breakfast, grab a handful of walnuts, a whole grain breakfast bar, yogurt, or
some peanut butter stuffed inside a whole wheat pita," advises Dave Grotto, a
registered dietician, nutrition expert and director of nutrition educational
services at Block Center for Integrated Cancer Care & Optimal Health. "Stay
away from the high sugar/caffeine foods like doughnuts, soda and coffee,"
explained Grotto. "Eating those foods can provide immediate fuel (glucose) to
the brain, but it's a very short-term fix. As your glucose level falls,
concentration becomes difficult and you end up feeling tired and ready for a
nap. Try making a fruit smoothie the night before so you can grab it in the
morning and guzzle it on the way to school," suggests Grotto, who recently
coached contestants auditioning for 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' about
specific brain foods that are optimal for concentration, and those that will
slow a person down. "Use fresh fruit like blueberries, blackberries,
strawberries, red grapes, and pomegranates ... all high in antioxidants, which
research shows enhances cognitive function, recall and memory. Add some yogurt,
mix in two tablespoons of peanut butter, for a supercharged brain smoothie. This
tasty concoction will zap the brain into an A+ charged state of concentration
that will last for hours."
One of the best brain boosters is the dependable egg. Eggs contain protein and
choline. Choline is one of the B vitamins that participates in many biological
processes, and is especially important for healthy brain, cardiovascular, and
liver function. Check the label for the type of eggs that are rich in Omega 3
fatty acids, which are also naturally lower in cholesterol. Omega 3 fats contain
DHA, an essential fat needed for brain development and for reducing harmful
brain plaques.
Students who chow down on burgers, fries, chicken nuggets or pizza at lunch,
will get a quick blood sugar surge, accompanied by that all too familiar crash,
most likely just as it's time to walk into their next class. Studies have shown
that consuming a high fat diet can impair learning skills as well as memory.
Instead, try a grilled chicken sandwich on a whole grain bun, or grilled tuna or
salmon burgers on whole wheat bread. Lean proteins with whole grains, along with
some healthy fats, will help students sustain energy and maximize their
potential throughout their school day.
Like gasoline in a car, students need to fuel themselves in moderation
throughout the day. "If hunger pangs hit in mid-morning, mid-afternoon, or as
soon as you come home from school, avoid snacking on candy bars, soda and potato
chips," says Grotto. "These foods can raise cholesterol levels, contribute to
weight gain and obesity, and an increased risk of diabetes. Instead, choose
brain food snacks like almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, whole grain cereal
bars, peanut butter and fruit juice-sweetened jelly on whole grain bread.
Instead of soda, mix non-sweetened grape juice with green tea. Green tea has the
same healthful antioxidants as red grapes and berries. If you need a chocolate
fix, the news is good. A small bar of dark chocolate - rich in antioxidants, is
fine. Or. some dark chocolate chips with some healthy nuts ... good for you and
tastes great!"
Students need to keep their levels of concentration up to absorb all the
information teachers are feeding to the brain. At night brain power needs to be
maintained to handle homework and studying, to say nothing about extracurricular
activities and a busy social life. "Feeding your brain the foods it needs, will
help you think in a new way about what you eat," concluded Grotto.
The Block Center for Integrative Cancer Care and Optimal Health was founded in
1980 by Penny and Keith Block, M.D. with a focus on treating the patient as a
whole person, not treating just the diagnosis or symptoms. The Center's
research-based treatment integrates an innovative approach to the best of
conventional medicine with scientifically sound complementary therapies --
therapeutic nutrition, botanical and phytonutrient supplementation, prescriptive
exercise, and systematic mind-body strategies -- to enhance the recovery
process. Block has pioneered this "middle ground" approach to cancer care and
optimal health - designing a total treatment plan that is tailored to the
precise needs of each patient, using a unique set of clinical and laboratory
assessments. The Block Center is breaking new ground with the creation and
development of Cancer Rehab as an innovative treatment modality, and currently
is the only private North American medical center using chrono-modulated
chemotherapy. While the Block Center is a full treatment clinic, it is involved
in collaborative research with M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas as
a Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP) and is also engaged in clinical
cancer research with other university facilities in the United States and
Israel.

This was such an unexpected source of relief I am still crying whenever I think
about it. My husband was recently laid off and needless to say that threw us
into an immediate financial crisis. Here's where I unexpectedly found hope. Last
Thursday I was walking to my car after finding out about my husband being laid
off. I couldn't help but sob. A woman in the lot stopped me and asked if
everything was okay. Not to burden anyone, I told her about my husband being
laid off and left it at that. With that she reached in her pocket book and
handed me a booklet and insisted that I take it. She told me that someone gave
it to her when she was in financial trouble. She went on to say that she is no
longer financially burdened and she wants to help me. With that she left and
disappeared into the large lot. I got home and decided to try this program and
sure enough, I was able to save $ 68.01 and only had to pay $12.20 for $80.21
worth of groceries for only $ 18.36! She must have been an angel. I am crying as
I type this. This program is being offered at http://savingmorethanbefore.com I don't
know what I would have done if I didn't meet that wonderful lady!

Many of you have asked me how I first found out about the amazing grocery savings program I always recommend. So I decided to share my story with all of you.

Back in 1999 I was bringing my oldest son Andy to Gymboree. One day when we arrived there was a large group of moms gathered around a shoebox on top of a table. I still remember hearing the moms shout WOW. I went right over to see what was going on. One of the moms had a shoebox full of grocery store and department store receipts. The receipts were all showing huge savings. Kristen, the mom with the shoebox, told us that she is a member of the sampler program that is offered at http://savingmorethanbefore.com As soon as I got home that day I signed up for the program and the savings have been amazing ever since.

I wish all our group members a happy and safe holiday season!

Re: An Online Black Friday Spectacular!

I was helping my Aunt get her Thanksgiving groceries late last night. What I
witnessed was truly amazing. She had 19 people over today so she needed a ton of
groceries. In fact she needed one full cart and a half of another full cart. The
items rang up to $457.79 (I saved her receipt)but yet she only had to pay
$30.03. Both the cashier and I were stunned. Afterwards she told me that she
uses the program at http://spendlessclub.com and that she gets similar
savings every time she shops. So as soon as I could get to my PC I went to join
the program too. I found out that they are running a bunch of great Black Friday
specials today.

Can you boost brain power with exercise? Several relevant studies were reported
on at the annual Meeting Of The Society Of Psychophysiological Research in
Montreal recently. The findings showed both immediate benefits from exercise, as
well as long-term effects. Exercise seems to help your brain work more
efficiently and actually make you smarter.
In one study, the thinking ability of subjects was tested. After the tests, they
ran on a treadmill for thirty minutes. Then when their hearts returned to normal
resting levels they took the follow-up tests. For all tests the subjects were
connected to an elctroencephalogram (EEG), in order to track their brainwaves.
The first thing researchers noted was that exercising had sped up the speed of
their decision-making. It was a significant difference. Upon scoring the tests,
it was also found that the subjects answered more accurately after the exercise
than before.
The study participants were between 18 and 24 years old, but researchers think
the findings will hold true for other age groups as well. Another study showed
that just ten minutes of moderate exercise each day can improve mood and reduce
fatigue. Brainpower specifically wasn't tested in that study, but it seems
likely that less fatigue means better brain power.
Best Exercise For Brain Power?
Most research has focused more on the duration of exercise more than on the
specific type. Aerobic exercise seems to be the common element in the studies
that have shown improvements in brainpower, however. It seems likely that
running, bicycling, swimming, dancing and any other aerobic exercises will have
the same effect.
Ten minutes of exercise is apparently enough to have effects on the brain. It's
not clear how much more benefit there may be with longer exercise sessions.
Interestingly, while most scientists probably expected to find brain power
benefits from long-term exercise programs, the study using treadmills showed an
immediate effect as well. In other words, get up and run around, and you can be
smarter ten minutes from now.
Many people find that walking is one of the best ways to boost brain power.
Apart from the aerobic benefits that are now being explained by recent studies,
there seems to be something more. Perhaps it has something to do with the
rythmic and relaxing nature of the exercise, but many people report that their
clearest and most creative thinking happens when walking.
The benefits of exercise include better sleep, a healthier immune system, weight
control, and a lower risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Now you can add
better brain power to that list. Why not take a walk today?

You're Getting Overcharged At The Grocery Store!

Unfortunately, I am in the same situation as millions of Americans. I
have two credit cards completely maxed out one other 3/4 maxed out, I
can't understand why every time I go to the supermarket (twice a week)
the prices on everything keeps going up 40 cents at a time, I dread to
open my utility bills, I am afraid to check my cars gas gauge and the
thought of putting the heat on in the house send shivers down my
spine. Yes, these are the worst times I ever recall in my life.
Knowing that so many of you are in the same situation provides no
comfort either. Three weeks ago my mom gave me the sampler program
from a company at http://unitedstatesdiscounts.com and this has really
helped me significantly. It has helped to eliminate the price
increases on many things and in most instances I am paying less for
food and merchandise than I did 10 years ago. It has taken away so
much stress from life. I hope that my message will help others out of
this very difficult time.

My responsibility as a group owner is to share with my members any information that can improve their lives whether on topic or not. Who doesn't want to save big bucks on groceries and dining out. Who doesn't want to pay pennies on the dollar for name brand merchandise. This is not a fly by night scheme, or get rich quick crap. This company is recognized by every major retail and online association and organization. They have also won countless awards since they opened their doors in 1977. I know this because I have done a lot of homework researching them. I have been using this program and saving a fortune. It is my obligation to share this information with all of you my members.

I too decided to join the programs at http://savingmorethanbefore.com the ones my cusin recommended so highly. Well last night I went to the supermarket and did my Thanksgiving shopping my order rang up exactly to $ 347.92 using this great program I only had to pay $ 16.89! Then I checked out the mall and its great too! I have never seen so many name brand products at wholesale prices. I called my cousin last night and could not thank her enough! Please share this email with our great group members. and say hello to Bob and the kids!

Lisa

Earlier this morning at the request of our group owner I forwarded to you an email she received from her relative about the programs being offered at http://savingmorethanbefore.com Since that time I have received well over 1,000 emails from people who have already been part of these programs. They are all boasting how great the program is and how much money they are saving with it. One person informed me she was the first person that ever signed up back in 1977 and has been a member ever since. I shared these with our group owner and she asked me to share this with you.

Dear Members, I have been asked by our group owner to share the following email that she received from her cousin Kim Morrison:

I want to share this amazing tip that I just received about the programs at http://savingmorethanbefore.com I went to the supermarket with my neighbor two weeks ago and she left with an overflowing cart of groceries and non food items and to my shock only had to pay $ 23.36. She told me how she joined the program at the website above. As soon as I got home I joined the program as well. Last night I went shopping for Thanksgiving. We are having 12 people over as we do every year. My grocery bill for this holiday has always been in the neighborhood of $ 250.00. Thanks to this wonderful program this years bill was only $ 31.19! I am so excited I want to share this wonderful program with everyone I can!
