I believe you need to be alarmed when the blood is brown or very dark red, with black stools.  This means it is digested blood, and he is bleeding internally.  For him being only 10, though this seems pretty unusual.  I would defiantly think this warrants a call to the GI.  Best of luck, hope he feels better soon.

Kass, It sounds like maybe he just has a small tear in his rectum and as long as the blood is bright red in color and he's not continuing to have any rectal ...

Kass, I am glad that you are going to see someone today. It sounded like a lot of blood to me. Fissures are common in kids with Crohn's--my nephew gets them...
