ICOH Announces Casting Call for "Idol" Competition

The Imperial Court of Houston, Inc - The Space City Empire to host "Space City Idol"
With Cash Prize of $500 and A Chance to Perform at Annual Ball

The Imperial Court of Houston, Inc.  [ICOH - The Space City Empire] recently announced plans to host "Space City Idol," a charity take-off from the popular television show "American Idol."

The winner of the event will receive $500 cash and a guest performance at the Enthronement Ball in October at the Holiday Inn Select. "This gives the winner a chance to perform in front of an audience of close to 300 people and at the same time raise quite a good amount for charity," explained Jim Vokoun, Treasurer of the Board of Directors. "It is quite an honor to receive an invitation to perform at this venue…and usually performers do quite well in tips!"

The open casting call will be held on Thursday, July 17 at 7:00 pm at Michael's Outpost, 1419 Richmond. The contest is open to all entertainers of every style and variety. "We want to open this to anyone in the community who enjoys being on stage or just wants to try it out," explained Sean Carter, president (Apollo Emperor I) of ICOH. "We want female impersonation, live singing, comedy, lip sync, drama/theatrical, leather fantasy…you name it!" The event is a fund raiser for Reign I of ICOH whose chosen beneficiaries this year are the AIDS Foundation Houston Camp Hope Program and AssisHers.

The ten individuals will be selected that first evening to compete in the ten-week competition. The actual "Space City Idol Competition" will begin on Thursday, July 31 at 7:30 pm and continue every Thursday night following at the same time. All ten competition shows will be held at Michael's Outpost. Each evening the performers will get the chance to perform a number of his or choice. There will be three judges, and each week there will be a fourth "celebrity" judge. The celebrity judge each week will be a local leader from within the Houston GLBT Community.

The audience will get a chance to vote each Thursday, and votes will be taken online as well. The tips the performers receive will also count toward their "score" as the total money brought in each evening will be added as a percentage in direct proportion to the total number of votes cast each week. Each week, the show will open with the announcement of which contestant does not continue to compete in the next round. The final week the winner will be announced, and he/she will open the Members of the Universe Show (October 2), which is one of the opening events of ICOH's Enthronement Weekend.

"There is a lot of talent in this community and this is one way to showcase that talent," continued Carter. "There are people within our community who don't get the opportunity to perform in front of an audience, and this is our way of giving them that chance."
