Minnesota Online Lyme Support Group is a virtual meeting place and source for information and emotional support for people with Lyme and other tick-borne diseases living in MN.

MN is a high risk state for Lyme with many areas reaching endemic levels. Infection rates have increased 1800% in the past 10 years and Minnesota ranks 8th in the nation with 1293 surveillance cases reported to the CDC in 2010.

In MN, Lyme Disease is carried by the deer tick, Ixodes scapularis. One in three of these ticks carry the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. Ticks are active in temperatures above 38 degrees and can carry other diseases, referred to as co-infections. A single tick bite can transmit more than one disease, making diagnosis and treatment more complicated.

Lyme disease is a clinical diagnosis. Testing may confirm a diagnosis but it cannot rule Lyme disease in or out. Coinfections such as Babesia and Anaplasma are common in MN; their symptoms overlap those of Lyme disease further complicating the situation. Lyme is often referred to as the “Great Imitator” and some common misdiagnoses include: Fibromyalgia, CFS, MS, ALS, ADHD, Parkinson’s and other Mental Illness.
