MN is a high risk state for Lyme with many areas reaching endemic levels. According to the MN Dept. of Health from 1986 to 2007, more than 10,000 cases of tick-borne diseases were reported in Minnesota, of which the majority (nearly 8,700 cases) were Lyme disease.
In MN, Lyme Disease is carried by the eastern black-legged tick, Ixodes scapularis, also known as deer ticks. They are active in temperatures above 38 degrees. Ticks can carry other diseases referred to as co-infections. A single tick bite can transmit more than 1 disease often making diagnosis and treatment more complicated.
Lyme is often referred to as the “Great Imitator” and common misdiagnoses are: Fibromylagia, CFS, MS, ALS, ADHD, Parkinson’s and other Mental Illness.
There are currently 2 important bills affecting people with Lyme disease: Federal Bill HR 1179 / S 1352 “Lyme and Tick-Borne Disease Prevention, Education & Research Act of 2009 and MN State Bill S.F. No. 1631 which is a Physician Protection Bill. Similar bills have been passed in CT, RI, NY and CA. Please ask your legislators to support these bills.
