CLINICAL TRIAL- STEP-BD
STEP-BD is the largest treatment study ever conducted for bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness. It is a long-term outpatient project that aims to find out which treatments, or combinations of treatments, are most effective for treating episodes of depression and mania and for preventing recurrent episodes. The five-year project will enroll approximately 5,000 volunteers with bipolar disorder into the care of specially trained clinicians.

EXPULSION FROM SCHOOL- Basic Outline of Expulsion of Special Education Students
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, (IDEA), federal legislation which protects special education students, makes expelling Special Education students very difficult. The basic idea here is that many kids with emotional impairments do and say things that are directly related to their impairment. Therefore, the school would be basically expelling the student for having an emotional impairment. This is obviously unfair, discriminatory and completely ridiculous. This is also a major strategy for keeping kids in schools.

FAMILY- The Therapeutic Home
Parents of bipolar children often change their home environment to make their child's life--and the whole family's life--easier. It's one of those things that moms and dads do without really thinking about it. Just as you look at your home in a new light when an infant begins crawling and exploring, the emergence of bipolar symptoms in a child warrants some revisions. You might think of it as making your home a therapeutic environment.

WITHDRAWL EFFECTS of Psychiatric Drugs
A familiarity with drug withdrawal reactions will help you in working with anyone who is taking psychiatric medication. Many patients don't take their medications as prescribed; they will alter their dosage, increasing or decreasing the amount they take. Or they will miss a day's medication, and then catch up by taking twice as much the next day. By mistakenly taking too little medication, they may bring on the early stages of withdrawal. Mysterious physical and emotional complaints may actually be signs that they are not taking their medication as prescribed.
