December 30, 2008

PNN -Israeli forces killed two girls in an air attack on Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza Strip early Tuesday. Local sources report that a missile destroyed a house belonging to Talal Hamdan in Beit Hanoun today, killing his two daughters of 12 and 4 years old. A son is reported seriously injured. Yesterday Israeli forces killed four sisters and a four year old boy. Over 40 children have been killed since Saturday.

Dec 29 - Palestinian mourners on Monday (December 29) buried 8 children who were killed in Israeli air strikes on Gaza Strip.

In the northern Gaza town of Jabalya , hundreds took to the streets to attend a funeral procession for five girls of the same family who were killed in one Israeli strike.

Hundreds of members of Pakistan's Hindu community have turned out to protest on behalf of a Muslim charity accused by India over the deadly Mumbai attacks.

Some of the banners read: "Do not ban our saviour!"

Bhai Chand, a Hindu community leader, told Associated Press the charity had set up water wells in the desert.

In this Muslim World, Mosques and Churches often share the same space.

I was once again reminded of the amazing degree of religious tolerance that many Christians in this country display habitually. Last Sunday, on the 29th of June, I had the rare honor of giving the sermon in a Christian service at the St. Thomas Episcopalian Church in Newark, Delaware. I have given the Islamic sermon (Khutbah) at mosques but giving one at a Church was an extraordinary ecumenical experience.

Quran, the holy book of Muslims, teaches that diversity has a divine purpose. God could have created us all the same if He chose to, but in his infinite wisdom he created us as people of different ethnicities, races and beliefs in order that we get to know each other, and compete in doing good (Quran: 49:13, 2:148) . It was in this spirit that I visited with the Episcopalian community.

The history of conflict between Islam and Christendom is well known. The crusades, the Muslim conquest of Constantinople (now Istanbul), and the Spanish inquisition have all been the fodder of folklores for centuries. The contemporary conflicts in the Middle East also get more than their fair share of media coverage. What escapes attention are the many gestures of goodwill that Muslims and Christians make to each other routinely all over the world. St. Thomas community's invitation to me was one such gesture that merits celebration.

Christian hospitality to Islam is neither new nor unusual. It is a 1400 year old Islamo-Christian tradition. It all began in 614 AD. Muhammed the Prophet of Islam started preaching his message of one God in Mecca around 610 AD. He gathered a few followers around him, who for years were tortured and prosecuted by the pagan majority in Mecca. Five years into his ministry, Muhammed asked some of his followers who suffered the most to migrate to Abyssinia which was ruled by a Christian King. King Negus was a pious man who gave the immigrants refuge and the protection to live safely and to practice their faith. Muslims to this day remember and cherish King Negus.

Within five years of the birth of Islam, Muslims were migrating to Christian lands in search of religious freedom. While 1400 years ago, only fifteen Muslims, 11 men and four women sought safe haven in Christian Abyssinia; today nearly three million Muslims enjoy the same in the US. Many prominent American Muslims have gone on record saying that they feel freer to practice Islam in America than in their country of origin.

Islam does not just thrive in the secular democracy of the US. It also thrives on the sacred grounds of this nation. All across the country there are scores of churches which routinely allow Muslims to offer their Friday prayers on their premises. Even where Muslims have the critical mass and resources to build a mosque, on Fridays they still park in the parking lots of churches.

I lived outside Washington DC in Northern Virginia from 1995-2000. At that time there were about five places on route seven where you could catch a Friday prayer – two churches, one mosque, the back of a store and a convention hall at a Best Western hotel. The mosque had a capacity for over 600 worshippers and 200 cars. The rest of the cars were parked, with permission and free of charge, in the lots of two churches in the vicinity of the mosque. This situation was not and is not unusual.

After the sermon, I chatted with the congregationists about the common ground between Islam and Christianity. I felt genuine fellowship and realized that in spite of everything that has happened in global politics, Islam in America prospers in the benign embrace of Christianity.

However, not all is hunky dory. In the US nearly 40% Americans today have a negative view of Muslims and many preachers continue to demonize Islam. Only last month Republican candidate John McCain repudiated the endorsement of prominent pastor Rod Parsely who preaches that America was created to destroy Islam and calls for a new crusade to eradicate it. More Parsleys are emerging everyday.

The Quran says about Christians that among them there are those who do good, forbid evil and are in the ranks of the righteous (3:113-114), I believe that last Sunday, I was in the midst of just such a community.

Healing The Wounds

I have been asked to share my views on Millennium. Today is a special day of the week for me.  Today was my day to give two hours of volunteer medical care at the mobile medical van of Gennessaret Free Clinic (GFC).  At GFC doctors, nurses and volunteers take care of the homeless people, people who are out on the streets with no place to live and very little or no food.  I have been staffing that clinic for six years now.  I spent two hours on Sunday afternoon there.  The condition of people I see breaks my heart and brings tears to my eyes. 

 

             We were trained in medicine to take care of people, after proper examination and tests to make appropriate diagnoses, give the right treatment, X-rays, angioplasty, CT scan, MRI.  Here at GFC we are very limited as to what we can do for these poor people.  At GFC we have a van, full of all kinds of medicines donated by drug companies.  In the name of God, we give the medicine and hope it works!  In 1991, GFC received President Bush's 1000 Point of Light Award.

 

             Homeless people who come to this clinic don't just come for medicine.  When I started it 6 years ago, I thought I would be a physician only.  These people have all kinds of needs which we don't realize.  A young mother brought her little infant in and asked if we have any baby formula there, and I said no, we don't have baby formula; this is a medical van.  Then she asked, do you have Pampers in this van?  I said, "No we don't have Pampers!"  The most common items we give, in addition to medicines, include socks in the summer and gloves in the winter as well as hygiene items, soaps and cosmetics—everyone gets them.  These are all donated items.  People ask for all kinds of things—several young people asked for prophylactics and we don't carry those either.  One day a young homeless man came shivering with fever.  He was wearing only a light shirt and it was cold outside.  All his belongings were stolen.  I felt so bad I gave him my jacket. 

 

             So the needs of humans are too many and on the side of the van is the inscription from the Bible which says "anyone who touched him was healed".  "Him" refers to Jesus and it brings up the question of the Millennium.  What does Jesus  mean to all of us?  What does he mean to a Jewish person because Jesus was after Moses and many Jewish people thing he was a reformed Jew.  What does he mean to Muslims who love him, respect him and the Quran itself holds him in very high regard, calling him a sign, mercy, a witness, an example, a messiah, a messenger, a prophet, servant and spirit of God.

 

             No one should have a monopoly on Jesus.  When I was at The Millennium Institute Conference in Chicago, initially there was a controversy about the Millennium.  The question was: If the Millennium is a Christian celebration then what are we doing here?

 

            The Millennium is an event which is taking place after one thousand years.  Therefore, it is a time to reflect upon what has happened in the last Millennium, where we stand now and in which direction we are going.  If we do not know which direction we are going or where we want to be, we might end up where we never wanted to be. 

 

             The previous Millennium, especially the last half of it, was not a very good one.  There have been many, may problems in the world. In the two World Wars, millions of people died.  I think in the Second World War, about 25 million people died.  The Korean War, Vietnam War use of the atom bomb, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust--- so this has been a very troublesome Millennium.  There are 20million people now who are stateless, refugees whom nobody wants.  They have no nationality, no passport—they just keep migrating from one place to another until they get settled.  There has been violence, poverty, racism and terrorism.  These are forces of evil and they are very persistent in their efforts.  Therefore, the forces of good should also not give in. 

 

             "There should be no compulsion in religion."  This is from Quran that people should decide to choose their religion and Muslims must respect that.  There is a difference between religion and theology.  Religion is beneficial and theology is not always so.  In the words of Dr. M. Lillienthal "Religion is universal, theology is exclusive; religion is humanitarian, theology is sectarian; religion unites mankind and theology divides it; religion is love, theology preaches love and practices bigotry; religion looks to the moral worth of man, theology to his creed and denomination; religion is life, love and virtue, theology sows the seeds of discord and disunites one from another."

 

             In theology, we try to prove something:  "I am right and you are wrong", "My product is better than yours" and "I will go to Heaven and you will go to Hell."  I don't know if this is all true.  Only god knows who will go to Heaven and who will go to Hell.  We have an obligation among each other to know each other as human beings.  We should accept each other as we are, and have a human responsibility to each other.  If something happens such as an earthquake, if anyone gets injured, am I supposed to ask a question before I attend as a physician, "Are you a Christian of a Muslim?"  I respond to your human need because you are the same species as I am—that's it, no questions asked!

 

             Thomas Jefferson, a great man, said "I never told my own religion nor scrutinized that of another.  I never attempted to make a convert nor wish to change another's creed.  I have never judged others' religion by their lives for it is from our life and not from our works that religion must be read."

 

             How one lives the religion is important.  It is said that "religion is something that men will wrangle for, write for, fight for, die for, do anything except live by it."  So which is the religion that says Thou shall steal, Thou shall kill ?  None of them.  The moral code of all religions is very similar.

 

             Now coming back to the Millennium, we need to have a global ethics in order to have a global order.   Global ethics are very important and before we come to the components of global ethics, we must decide on certain principles:

 

             1.  That God belongs to all.  God is not my God only; there is no monopoly on God.  That is as childish as when my children were young like two and four years old and I entered the house, they attacked me. "My dad, my dad!" and they started fighting among each other.  Finally I had to settle them down, put one of them on one side of my leg and the other on the other side, telling them "I am dad to both of you."  Therefore, God belongs to all of us.  He is not the God of Christians and Jews.  Webster's dictionary describes Allah as the God of Muslims.  Never in the Quran did He say that I am Lord of Muslims; He says I am the Lord of the universe.  He is not only the Lord of Muslims, Jews and Christians and everyone else, but the whole universe.  A poet put it this way

             At the muezzin's call to prayer, the kneeling faithful throng the square

            And on the Pushkara's lofty heights,

            The saintly priest chanted Brahma's might.

            Amid a monastery's weed,

            An old Franciscan told his beads,

            While to the synagogue there came a Jew to praise Jehovah's name. 

            The one great God looked down, smiled and counted each His loving child.

            For the Turk and Brahman, Monk and Jew,

            They all had reached Him through their prayers they knew.

 

            This is it, my friends.  God takes care of all those who believe in Him and also those who deny Him.  He provides even for those who are atheists, knowing that these people don't believe in Him.  We expect so much mercy from God, but we are not merciful to each other.  We expect forgiveness from God, but we are unforgiving of each other.  It is a shame that we have been created in the image of God, but is our behavior in His image?

 

2.      The second thing to understand is that God's mercy surpasses His wrath.  Of the 99 attributes of God, as Muslims know, the most common one is Ar-Rahman, which means the compassionate.  He is merciful and His mercy is so great that once you ask for forgiveness, He will forgive you but you have to ask.  Not asking for forgiveness is a sign of arrogance.  He has tolerance.  We do sin all the time, even the priests and the mullahs.  He has tolerance so we should be tolerant of each other. 

 

             Just because another person prays to the same God in a different manner, in a different language, in a different posture, in a different direction, that does not make him or her less worthy of my love, of my respect for his life and his values.

 

             We humans are unique.  Let us compare ourselves to trees and birds, for example.  We don't think very much of trees which are cut in a forest.  They seem to be much better creations than we are.  Trees have very little need for themselves.  They grow on their own but are so beneficial to everyone else.  They provide shade, fruits, oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide.  They perform so many functions.  Without trees the world would be nothing.  The first thing we want to do with any land where we go is plant trees.  But more than that, they don't make any distinction between people and they are kind to everyone!  And, look at the birds, the hummingbirds that come and sit down on the trees and enjoy them.  Before these birds are allowed to land on a tree, do you think trees ask these birds the questions; "What is your color? What is your race?  What is your religion? What is your belief?  From which part of the world are you migrating?"  These questions are not asked by trees, but we human beings, before we extend our kindness to another fellow human being, do ask.

 

             I get asked these kinds of questions all the time, like where do I come from?  Even recently, a Muslim organization asked me, and I replied from Heaven!

 

             It's nice to know, but what difference does it make where I come from?  In the Quran it says that "We created you from a single pair of male and female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you know each other (not that you despise each other)."  Thus, creation of color, language and shape is the design of God.  He could have made us of the same color, but He created human beings in different colors, speaking different languages, just like the two gardens.  You go to one garden and the flowers are of the same kind, same color, same shape and same fragrance.  Would you like that garden or would you go to another garden where there are different types of flowers, with different colors of flowers and different fragrances?   It was not that I painted myself brown and you painted yourself white.  Quran says "The best among you, again in the eyes of God the one who is most God conscious." 

 

             The components of global ethics are commitment to non-violence, respect for life, commitment to solidarity and a just economic order.  The problems in the world, for example, the violence that we see, are not always between the religions but it is usually between those who have and those who have not.  In India, the sectarian riots at times have an economic motive to destroy the businesses of the other party. 

 

             So in many places there is violence, from South Africa to South America and in all these places you can see there are haves and have-nots.  As long as the North-South debate is going on, the North is taking advantage of the South and the Sou9th remains a market for the North, there will be injustice and violence.  Commitment to tolerance for each other—it's a part of global ethics; we are improving but still we have not come close. 

 

             Yesterday I was watching the TV and President Clinton gave a speech:  Now 34 churches have been burned down so far in the South.  Now this is not the Muslims of the Jews burning Christian churches; both sides are Christian.  Today we are talking about Jesus, we are talking about what Jesus did for people and both of them are followers of Jesus.  Racism is a shameful disgrace to our great society.

 

             Equal rights and partnership of men and women, equality of men and women should be a goal of the next millennium.  Women have been oppressed everywhere, in every time period, by followers of every religion.  I think that instead of women fighting for their rights, it is better to give them their due share of respect and equality in economic justice. 

 

             In this new  Millennium, we, in the religious community, have a duty toward our world and toward our fellow human beings.  It is our unilateral obligation to invite others and to work together in building a better and more peaceful world, a world which is free from oppression and exploitation, where rights are realities and where justice prevails over oppression.

 

             Prophet Mohammed  had predicted the coming of an age that after many years of bloodshed, the people would recommit themselves to peace and unity of mankind and we are going in that direction but must increase the pace because the forces of evil have not stopped working and therefore we cannot stop working either.  The destiny of mankind is doomed unless people join together in goodness.

NEW DELHI: More arrests are expected in the coming weeks as the frightening dimensions of a radical Hindu terror plot start to unravel, with investigators indicating that it had the makings of a larger conspiracy and planning of reprisal killings of Muslims for serial bombings in a number of Indian cities.

 

Ten people, including a self-proclaimed Hindu seer and a serving lieutenant colonel, have so far been arrested for the Sep 29 bombing in a Muslim-dominated neighbourhood in the small Maharashtra town of Malegaon that killed five people. Investigators are now examining if a Hindu terror conspiracy was involved in several other blasts - like the one of the Samjhauta Express train in 2007 - that have till date remained unsolved.

The Anti-Terrorism Squad's (ATS) arrest of Mahant Amritanand Dev alias Dayanand Pandey, the self-styled pontiff from Kanpur, which investigators say is a "prize catch", has already revealed that it was under his instructions that Lt. Colonel Shrikant Purohit procured RDX from an army depot that was used in the Malegaon blast.

"Pandey was present in all the pre-blast meetings in Bhopal, Jabalpur and Faridabad, monitored operations meticulously and was also responsible for arranging the finances that came in through illegal channels," an ATS source told IANS.

Investigators are now questioning the suspects on the May 2007 blast at Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad, the attack on the Samjhauta Express train between India and Pakistan in February 2007 and the April 2006 twin blasts at New Delhi's Jama Masjid.

"Not much headway has been made into the investigations in these attacks. We need to examine if a similar radical Hindu fringe could have been behind these bombings and that is under the scanner now," said a senior intelligence official, who could not be named because of the sensitivity of his position.

“We could see more arrests in the coming days but that will depend on whether we can get sufficient evidence.”

It is believed that Pandey, a dropout from the National Defence Academy, was in touch with two other accused who are on the run - Ramji Kalsangara, who allegedly planted the motorcycle owned by the Hindu ascetic Pragya Singh Thakur in Malegaon, and Sameer Dange.

In the Mecca Masjid blasts as many as 14 people were killed and over 50 injured. The case was investigated by the city police special wing and was later handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation which could not come to any conclusion. There were some remote indications of Bangladesh-based terror outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad- al-Islami' s involvement.

Investigations into the Samjhauta Express explosion, in which at least 68 people were killed, and the Jama Masjid blast also failed to make headway and police could not across on any tangible leads.

Police have already established a strong link between Pandey and some of the suspects in the Kanpur blast case through surveillance - on Aug 24, two members of the right-wing Bajrang Dal were killed there while assembling bombs.

“With his (Pandey) arrest we will now get to the bottom of this case and see if there are linkages as well in the 2006 Nanded blasts in Maharashtra,” said a senior police official.

Unearthing this terror network has indicated a major course correction for police, who had blamed Islamic terrorists for a wave of bombings that have killed more than 145 people targeting cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Jaipur this year.

The arrests have reinforced growing suspicions over the last few years of a potential threat from Hindu extremists.

Hindu extremists behind Samjhauta, Ajmer blasts?

Hindu extremists involved in Malegaon blasts may also be behind Ajmer and Samjhauta Express blasts, sources have told NDTV.

They say Aseemanand, Dayanand and Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur met at Shabari Kumbh at Dangs.

The group then began to meet regularly to plan attacks.

Police also suspect the group could be behind the Ajmer dargah blast in February 2007.

The man who planted Ajmer bomb was killed by the group. They may also be behind Samjhauta Express blast, sources say. Leaders of mainstream Hindutva groups were aware of their activities, they add.

The development comes even as Lt Colonel Prasad Purohit, the first serving Indian Army officer to be held in a terror-related case, has reportedly confessed to his role in the Malegaon blast during his narco-analysis test in Bangalore.

The Miracle of Zam Zam Water

Come the Hajj season , and I am reminded of the wonders of Zumzum water. Let me go back to how it all started. In 1971 , an Egyptian doctor wrote to the European Press , a letter saying that Zumzum water was not fit for drinking purposes. I immediately thought that this was just a form of prejudice against the Muslims and that since his statement was based on the assumption that since the Ka'aba was a shallow place (below sea level) and located in the center of the city of Makkah , the wastewater of the city collecting through the drains fell into well holding the water.
Fortunately , the news came to King Faisal's ears who got extremely angry and decided to disprove the Egyptian doctor's provocative statement. He immediately ordered the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources to investigate and send samples of Zumzum water to European laboratories for testing the potability of the water.
The ministry then instructed the Jeddah Power and Desalination Plants to carry out this task. It was here that I was employed as a desalting engineer (chemical engineer to produce drinking water from sea water). I was chosen to carry out this assignment. At this stage , I remember that I had no idea what the well holding the water looked like. I went to Makkah and reported to the authorities at the Ka'aba explaining my purpose of visit.
They deputed a man to give me whatever help was required. When we reached the well , it was hard for me to believe that a pool of water , more like a small pond , about 18 by 14 feet , was the well that supplied millions of gallons of water every year to hajis ever since it came into existence at the time of Hazrat Ibrahim A.S. , many , many centuries ago. I started my investigations and took the dimensions of the well. I asked the man to show me the depth of the well.
First he took a shower and descended into the water. Then he straightened his body. I saw that the water level came up to just above his shoulders. His height was around five feet , eight inches. He then started moving from one corner to the other in the well (standing all the while since he was not allowed to dip his head into the water) in search of any inlet or pipeline inside the well to see from where the water came in. However , the man reported that he could not find any inlet or pipeline inside the well.
I thought of another idea. The water could be withdrawn rapidly with the help of a big transfer pump which was installed at the well for the Zumzum water storage tanks. In this way , the water level would drop enabling us to locate the point of entry of the water. Surprisingly , nothing was observed during the pumping period , but I knew that this was the only method by which you could find the entrance of the water to the well. So I decided to repeat the process. But this time I instructed the man to stand still at one place and carefully observe any unusual thing happening inside the well. After a while , he suddenly raised his hands and shouted , "Alhamdollillah! I have found it. The sand is dancing beneath my feet as the water oozes out of the bed of the well."
Then he moved around the well during the pumping period and noticed the same phenomenon everywhere in the well. Actually the flow of water into the well through the bed was equal at every point , thus keeping the level of the water steady. After I finished my observations I took the samples of the water for European laboratories to test. Before I left the Ka'aba , I asked the authorities about the other wells around Makkah.
I was told that these wells were mostly dry. When I reached my office in Jeddah I reported my findings to my boss who listened with great interest but made a very irrational comment that the Zumzum well could be internally connected to the Red Sea . How was it possible when Makkah is about 75 kilometres away from the sea and the wells located before the city usually remains dry? The results of the water samples tested by the European laboratories and the one We analysed in our own laboratory were found to be almost identical.
The difference between Zumzum water and other water (city water) was in the quantity of calcium and magnesium salts.
The content of these was slightly higher in Zumzum water. This may be why this water refreshes tired hajis , but more significantly , the water contained fluorides that have an effective germicidal action. Moreover , the remarks of the European laboratories showed that the water was fit for drinking.
Hence the statement made by the Egyptian doctor was proved false. When this was reported to King Faisal he was extremely pleased and ordered the contradiction of the report in the European Press. In a way , it was a blessing that this study was undertaken to show the chemical composition of the water. In fact , the more you explore , the more wonders surface and you find yourself believing implicitly in the miracles of this water that God bestowed as a gift on the faithful coming from far and wide to the desert land for pilgrimage.
Let me sum up some of the features of Zumzum water.
This well has never dried up. On the contrary it has always fulfilled the demand for water. It has always maintained the same salt composition and taste ever since it came into existence. Its potability has always been universally recognised as pilgrims from all over the world visit Ka'aba every year for Hajj and umrah , but have never complained about it. Instead , they have always enjoyed the water that refreshes them. Water tastes different at different places.
Zumzum water's appeal has always been universal. This water has never been chemically treated or chlorinated as is the case with water pumped into the cities. Biological growth and vegetation usually takes place in most wells. This makes the water unpalatable owing to the growth of algae causing taste and odour problems.
But in the case of the Zumzum water well , there wasn't any sign of biological growth. Centuries ago , Hagar (raa) searched desperately for water in the hills of Safa and Marwa to give to her newly born son Ismail (pbuh) As she ran from one place to another in search of water , her child rubbed his feet against the sand. A pool of water surfaced , and by the grace of God , shaped itself into a well which came to be called Zumzum water.
