TURMEL: Guelph Election Final Report   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #2394 of 2514 |

JCT: There's a great 12-minute interview on the Guelph
University radio station:

CFRU Candidate Interviews - Independent John Turmel
The independent candidate John "Anti-poverty Engineer"
Turmel joined us by phone on CFRU on October 9th.
You admire his passion although sometimes you wonder if he's
actually listening to you!
Listen to the interview here:

Lazy Sunday
http://guelphbyelectionbeat.blogspot.com/2008/10/lazy-sunday.html
The Mercury's Brad Needham posted this list on the paper's Guelph
Votes blog Wednesday, and I loved it, so I felt like sharing.

Top 10 signs the election campaign, which started in Guelph on
July 25, has gone on too long.

10. Prime Minister Stephen Harper almost made it to Guelph.
(Editor's Note: Remember: Wednesday, the PM did, in fact make it
to Guelph)
9. NDP Leader Jack Layton has run out of Stephen Harper sweater
jokes.
8. Liberal Leader Stephane Dion is actually starting to make
sense.
7. Karen Levenson of the Animal Alliance Environment Voters party
has been talking about giving a voice to animals. Beverly Hills
Chihuahua is the Number 1 movie in the country. Coincidence? I
think not.
6. The kids riding bikes outside Green candidate Mike Nagy's
Gordon Street office are thinking about university.
5. Independent candidate John Turmel hasn't been arrested in
weeks.
4. The NDP's Tom King is out of stories.
3. Even Liberal Frank Valeriote would admit that getting his law
degree was easier than trying to explain the Green Shift.
2. Conservative Gloria Kovach has been spotted at some all-
candidates debates.
1. Even the vandals are getting bored. Guelph's election signs
have never looked better.

Happy Holiday Monday
http://vomitcomet.blogspot.com/2008/10/happy-holiday-monday.html
Hey.
If you're Canadian and haven't done it in advance, don't forget
to go out and vote tomorrow. And for those of you in Guelph,
you'd better be casting your ballot for John Turmel. I wish I had
some video clips to share with you, but unfortunately nobody has
bothered to put up any of our local debate footage.

JCT: I have. Just Google Video for turmel and guelph

Suffice it to say, the guy's completely fucking insane and much
too awesome for words. Anybody who's main platform includes vote
for me for sex drugs and rock and roll is fine by me. But in all
seriousness, I'll likely be voting NDP.

JCT: Can't bet on me when I'm not going to win and you're trying
to pick the winner.

I have a good feeling about Tom King, their local candidate. He's
very well spoken and I agree with a lot of what he says.

JCT: I found him to be a complete wimp, not a leader, a complete
follower doing whatever those in authority tell him.

Besides, a vote for Turmel would be a vote for fucking up a world
record. Good old John is known for losing more elections than
anybody in history, 66 at last count.

JCT: I've already "not lost" one byelection so that doesn't
matter.

Happy Election Day!
So here we are gang! The day you get to exercise your franchise
and help choose who will lead the country for however long they
can lead in a minority government situation.
In Guelph, there are 10, count 'em, 10 people on the ballot. You
mean to tell me that there is no one on the Guelph ballot whom
you remotely agree with? I realize this may be harder in other
ridings where your choices are limited to the Top 4 (Liberal,
Conservative, NDP and Green), but in Guelph you're covered from
the Far Right (Libertarian) to the far left (Communist, Marxist-
Leninist), and all points in between (John Turmel?).

money and doesn't know about Shift B inflation.

Guelph fringe candidates reflect
http://news.guelphmercury.com/article/392317
Thana Dharmarajah

GUELPH

Some of their voices were clearly heard. Others were quieter, but
many of the fringe candidates felt they left their mark on this
federal election campaign.

John Turmel, Independent:

The loudest newsmaker showed up at a local high school uninvited
for a candidates debate.

Instead of leaving quietly when told he wasn't invited, Turmel
came back on stage to protest. He was escorted out by Guelph
Police officers.

"When I showed up to protest, people realize that views are being
censored," Turmel said, adding when all candidates aren't invited
to a debate, organizers are influencing the election. "They're
giving my opponents an unfair advantage."

Turmel, whose home riding is Brantford, also ran in Guelph's
Sept. 8 byelection. It was cancelled when the federal election
was called.

He said his decision to run in Guelph was due to the fact that he
was allowed to participate in more debates here. However, during
the byelection, police also escorted Turmel out of the Guelph
Chamber of Commerce debate.

Last night, the Independent candidate was celebrating the end of
the campaign with his girlfriend and the TV turned off.

Turmel said he didn't enter the race to win, but rather to voice
his concept about an interest-free economy, where people would
trade work or goods rather than cash as currency.

This is his 68th loss as a candidate in a municipal, provincial
or federal election in Canada. According to the Guinness Book of
Records, he currently holds the record for most elections
contested and most elections lost. But he said that won't sway
him from giving it another try.

Drew Garvie, Communist Party of Canada:

Garvie was gathering with his friends and supporters to watch the
election results roll in.

"It's not a victory party," he said as the festivities were
beginning last night. "I haven't packed anything to go to
Ottawa."

This election was a confusing one, Garvie said, with people
unsure whether the Conservatives would secure another minority
government or whether it would go to the Liberals.

It meant less votes went to the fringe parties, he said.

Garvie said he did his best to raise his party's issues such as
opposing Canada's involvement in Afghanistan and nationalizing
the oil and gas industry.

Kornelis Klevering, Marijuana Party of Canada:

Klevering felt he made more of an impact at high school debates
than with the general public. "I felt the younger crowd was more
inquisitive and critical," he said.

At one debate, students put him on the spot asking whether
legalizing marijuana would lead to the use of harder drugs.
Klevering said he explained marijuana was falsely classified from
the beginning and is a soft drug.

Philip Bender, Libertarian Party of Canada:

In this election, Bender said his objective was to identify other
Libertarians. "You only have to make a difference to one guy to
make it worthwhile."

He also wanted to stimulate critical thinking about the electoral
process, he said.

It will be a long process for the Libertarian party to convince
voters there needs to be limited government involvement in
Canadian's lives, Bender said.

Post-Election New Rules
http://guelphbyelectionbeat.blogspot.com/2008/10/post-election-new-rules.html
After every election, I like to take stock and outline briefly
some of my thoughts and opinions about the spectacle we all just
witnessed. To facilitate the organization of thought, and to
inject a little humour, I take a page from the book of Bill
Maher, literally...
New Rule: John Turmel has to keep running. - With the long list
of candidates, the rules at many of the debates were kind of
stringent. But Turmel's off the cuff and brutally honest debate
responses kept things lively, no matter where you sat on the
issue of LETS or professional gambling.

We're Number Six! We're Number Six!
http://calgarygrit.blogspot.com/2008/10/were-number-six-were-number-six.html

We all knew the order the major parties would finish on election
night - there were few surprises there. However, the real battle,
was the race for 6th through 19th. Yet due to the intense media
bias against them, we didn't hear their stories:

I don't know about you, but I would have rather heard stories
about Sinclair Stevens running to be Prime Minister, than about
Jack Layton running to be Prime Minister. (and Stevens'
controversial move to focus on the "dinning room table" rather
than the kitchen table)

I would have rather heard about vote splitting on the far far
left, than on the left.

I would have rather heard stories about the marijuana party's war
room than about the Conservative Party's. (guess which one was
more mature?)

I would have preferred Jane Taber focus on "anonymous Animal
Alliance insiders" than "Liberal sources".

And how come we never heard about the leadership struggles going
on inside the "work less" party? (probably because they only ran
one candidate)

So I applaud these parties for overcoming the media bias and
tying the Greens in the seat count. I sincerely hope they are all
considered for inclusion in the 2010 debates.

6. Christian Heritage: 26,722 votes (average: 453 per candidate)
7. Marxist-Leninist: 8,753 votes (148 per candidate)
8. Libertarian: 7,382 votes (284 per candidate)
9. Progressive Canadian: 5,920 votes (592 per candidate)
10. Communist: 3,639 votes (152 per candidate)
11. Canadian Action: 3,508 votes (175 per candidate)
12. Marijuana: 2,319 votes (290 per candidate)
13. Neorhino.ca: 2,263 votes (323 per candidate)
14. Newfoundland and Labrador First: 1,801 votes (600 per
candidate)
15. First Peoples National: 1,640 votes (274 per candidate)
16. Animal Alliance Environment Voters: 529 votes (132 per
candidate)
17. Work Less: 423 votes (423 votes per candidate)
18. Western Block: 195 votes (195 voters per candidate)19.
People's Political Power: 185 votes (93 per candidate)

I think there should be some award, maybe called the John Turmel
Award, for the worst showing.
In this case, Turmel couldn't even win his own award:
Manuel Couto, Marxist-Leninist, Guelph: 29 votes, lowest in
Canada. He also had the lowest %: 0.049240%
And what is it with Guelph? It had the largest number of
candidates (10). Maybe that explains Turmel's good/bad showing:
58 votes.

My new favourite candidate
http://discobaronettes.blogspot.com/2008/10/my-new-favourite-candidate.html

I have to admit, during the by-election and whatnot here in
Guelph, I didn't watch any debates, and thus didn't see the full
scope of the candidates we have to choose from. Tonight, this
changed.

I'm pretty sure there are like, 30 people running in this
election. Animal Alliance, libertarians, communists, marijuana,
the normal candidates and MY NEW FAVOURITE CANDIDATE:

Independent John Turmel

This man is crazy and hilarious. He was the only candidate to
stand up and gesticulate wildly every time he spoke (yelled), he
wore a construction helmet which read "TURMEL THE ENGINEER", and
I'm almost certain he said "I'm going to kill Ted Rogers" in his
concluding speech. My mother didn't hear that bit, but I'd prefer
to believe that he said it.

Wow. THIS is what Canada needs to make our elections more
exciting. Pure insanity.

Apparently, his blurb in the paper also says something about
legalizing prostitution because shy and unattractive people
deserve to get laid. THESE ARE THE ISSUES.

JCT: He included a video excerpt from the Csomor documentary at:

wow, this makes guelph look like a hick town.

Nah, he's run in so many places now it hardly says anything about
Guelph, I'd say.
It is pretty funny to see so many candidates at one "debate"
though. I wonder how guelph compares to other ridings in that
regard.

I do try to use humor because if you laugh at the joke, you got
my point.
What did you find crazy that I might want to drop?
Because, believe me, I didn't spend almost 30 years chasing an
interest-free credit card at the Bank of Canada (you'll have to
get one too) as a joke.

I`m glad you caught the humor which means you got my point.
But what`s crazy`` that I might drop because my Abolish Interest
Rates is too important to be jeopardized by my saying something
crazy (though the media love to say they were laughing at me and
not my jokes).
I didn't spend almost 30 years spreading the message in 58 losing
elections of wanting my interest-free Bank of Canada account to
solve this pauper`s problems to have that effort seem crazy. Any
help on my presentation would be appreciated.

Jct: How neat. Google for "losingest politician" and you'll
find that I'm in the Guinness Record for "most elections
contested" and I announced that not only was I a candidate
in the last Canadian federal election (#68) but announced my
candidacy for "Prime Minister of the Planet" and parsing
Barack Obama and John McCain's TV debates, and Matt Santos
and Arnold Vinnick presidential TV debates.

I don't need to get elected, I just need to be able to swing
enough votes to whichever will give all Americans an
interest-free United States Treasury Checking account
bypassing the banks for those government funds. See how
getting interest-free accounts at the Bank of Canada in my
online videos of the Guelph election debates.
---

JCT: So that's it for a while.

I've posted videos explaining money and the economy at youtube.
Just look for King of the Paupers. More on the way.
P.S.
Today, Wolf Blitzer gave Barack Obama a list of 5 items as
priorities and Barack said none of them were his first priority.
I remember thinking that I'd answer "fix the banking system" and
wondered what less-useful priority Senator Obama would have. He
said his first priority was to "stabilize the banking system."
Wow.
Wonder if he'll google for "banking systems engineer" for advice
on how to stabilize the banking system. I could just point to the
UNILETS resolution or explain it.
