JCT: I'm John C. "The Engineer" Turmel, B. Eng., entered in
1997 Guinness Record Book for most elections contested, ran
for Mayor of Ottawa, Premier of Ontario, Prime Minister of
Canada, spoke to the U.N. Millennium Assembly in 2000 which
resulted in Resolution C6 to Governments in the Millennium
Declaration to use an interest-free UNILETS "time-based
currency" to "restructure the global financial architecture"
and would probably be the first registered candidate if they
ever had an election for the leadership of planet.
On Jan 22 1997, exactly 10 years ago, Michael Richardson
proposed the alt.fan.john-turmel USENET blog:

Many of you have enjoyed the posts of Ottawa's John Turmel.
Many of you shudder when your newsreader comes up with a
subject line "TURMEL". In any case, you know it will be an
interesting day. Those of you with kill files probably don't
know what you are missing.
Who is this man? Is John Turmel his real name? Rumour has it
that he is fabulously rich. Others say that is just posturing.
Charter: alt.fan.john-turmel is a place to post questions,
queries, and debate about this well spoken, widely crossposted
person. Where else can you go and *know* you'll find posts
from this master of words and rhetoric?

I would like to see this newsgroup created. Are you planning
to post an RFD and have a vote (CFV) regarding the proposal?

(For an _alt.*_ group?)
I'd like to see alt.bonehead.john-turmel, unless somebody can
come up with the equivalent of a `Speedbump' nickname for him.
No, wait.

I was thinking of the newsgroup creation process for the big 8
groups. Could misc.fan.john-turmel be a viable alternative to
alt.fan.john-turmel? Another possibilty is to try to create a
similar newsgroup in a regional heirarchy (ie can.*, ont.*,
ott.*).

Geeeeeeez, does this mean all the cross-posting will stop and
I can remove my kill filters???

No, it just means that Turmoil will have one more newsgroup to
add to his already voluminous list. We'll still see his posts
smeared all around the newsgroups.

I am opposed to alt.fan.* groups on Usenet personalities. The
vast majority of posts are cross-posted to the groups they are
active in so nothing is gained.

It's pretty safe to say that the chances for getting a Big-8
group out of this is slim. Personalities must have a *massive*
following to get one. The idea of getting a regional group
sounds like a good one, provided there's really enough
interest out there.
JCT: Maybe it didn't take a "massive following," maybe it
just took "massive noise." Either way, alt.fan.john-turmel was
turned on right next to alt-fan.john-travolta and I started
posting all articles there for the past 10 years!
Thank you Michael Richardson for making me start up the
world's oldest political blog.
