Description

The Massachusetts Hearing Aids for Children Coalition (HAFCC) is a statewide coalition of families of deaf and hard of hearing children and professionals working together to pass legislation in our state that would compel insurance agencies to cover the cost of hearing aids for children 18 and under.

In January 2009, Rep. Sean Garballey (Arlington) filed House Bill 910, "An Act to provide coverage for hearing aids for children." If passed, this bill would require insurance companies in Massachusetts to provide coverage for the full cost of one (1) hearing aid per hearing impaired ear up to $1,600 for each hearing aid every three (3) years upon a written statement from a treating physician that the hearing aids are medically necessary. The bill also permits the insured to select a higher-priced hearing aid and pay the difference in cost above $1,600 without any financial or contractual penalty. We are currently awating a hearing date before the Joint Committee on Financial Services.
