i stumbled on an interesting website and electronic resource. I don't personally
kn ow much about the topic but maybe others do and would finmd the programmable
binaural-beat generator an interesting and useful resource.
The web site explains the basic idea and I downloaded the program and it seems
like an interesting concept and tool especially for people who are interested in
the effects of environment, music, etc...

I absolutely agree Vidette.
Two particular things are the fact that every student may feel ignored if the
teacher responds to similar posts by many students by way of a single post to
the first or most interesting student post - so 'helping' students feel that
they are being indivdually responded to is difficult because of the burden of
individualizing posts to let each student know that we have actually read what
they said - exacerbated by the fact that just like faculty, the students often
have trouble keeping up with the volume of posts.
Secondly, I have always had a few students in every class who preferred 1 - 1
contact off the DL environment - just as many students in class prefer to stop
by the office for individual sessions. but since email contact is not a
gemeinschafft - one must spend a lot more time crafting responses than would be
necessary when you can sense that a person is following what you are saying.
Third, perhaps, is what happens to us when we, as I am now, we are almost bereft
of our internet access... :-)
I think that most schools are lightyears behind the curve on the issue of
faculty time for DL course - just as they tend to be lightyears behind the curve
on tuition costs for DL. Most schools will likely fall by the wayside because
they fail to "adapt"... or perhaps, to transcend the past and present biases
about the 'educational' process... it is truly sad to see so many people with so
little technological literacy standing in the way of the appallingly small
number of people who are somewhat visionary...

Hi all, I have been approached about teaching on-line graduate courses
in holistic nursing. I find myself very interested, but also wondering
about the reality of this way of teaching. Their online system is D2L

with this. I would appreciate your personal experience/advice! Thanks,

Hello everyone,
Barbara Dossey asked me to request that you go to
http://www.nightingaledeclaration.net and sign the Nightingale Declaration. The
idea is to get 2 million signatures by November 2008 for 2 UN Resolutions as
part of the Nightingale Initiative for Global Health. The proposal will be
submitted to the American Academy of Nursing to present at the 2008 Annual
Meeting.
I signed this and truly, it only takes a minute.

Hi All,
Noreen Brady just sent the 2007 Call for abstracts for the SRS to me. It is
available on my mirror of the MER homepage.
You can access it at:

But is the information misleading or an accurate reflection of the current and
future state of nursing education and practice?
When I decided to become a nurse in 1996 I talked to a variety of people and was
counseled to avoid the associate degree programs because in the future the
minimal preparation would be a BSN. It sounded plausible in terms of the
trajectory of other professions so I went the BSN route. It was still a time
when admission requirements were quite high. As I worked through my masters and
PhD and certainly what i observe as a teacher, is a substantial reduction in
intellectual ability. Part of my consideration was that I was also being told
that pursuing graduate work in nursing would be difficult with an ASN.
By the time i finished my BSN in 1999 there were already a lot of schools that
were fast tracking people with prior bachelor's degrees or associate degrees in
nursing, for combo BSN/MSNs in ridiculously short periods of time compared with
the four years I spent in my bachelors and masters program.
But it seems that the really fast growing programs are those below the BSN. They
have the fastest throughput, respond most rapidly to increased funding
opportunities and meet production targets.
So it often seems that the 'most densely educated' (in a sense intended to mean
quantity of exposure to nursing knowledge) nurses are losing ever more ground to
the less densely educated nurses and the aspirations for a minimal preparation
of a baccalaureate strikes me as having been segued out for another generation
by the perception of a shortage to be met by producing tomorrow's nurses until
there are more than can be economically sustained.
Where there used to be discussions about curtailing ASN programs, it seems
untenable at the moment because anyone calling for that, despite the
appropriateness of that effort, would be derided as being unresponsive to the
'nursing shortage', which I continue to think is illusory... The shortage being
a qualitative vs a quantitative shortage...
:-)

Yes, David, I certainly agree that this is the most obvious and basic
interpretation of the designation...my faux pas...I guess I should have gone
a step further in asking the question that I really am concerned
about...."what do we want to do about it?"
I generally do not believe that nurses should cast blame to people outside
of nursing for unsatisfactory views about and within the profession. Are we
ready to change? Do we need to change? What do we want to do as a nursing
community to change views that are incorrect or unsatisfactory to us?

Hello Everyone,
On Sundays, my local newspaper includes a nationally syndicated "news"
magazine named "Parade." Each year the news magazine publishes a report
about "what people earn." I am always eager to read about nurses' salaries
and look forward to seeing whether or not nursing is included in the
"hottest jobs."
When reading today's issue with the annual report about "what people earn,"
I was skipping through the pages out of order while happily eating my
breakfast. I noticed a box in the article titled "The Hottest Jobs (For
College Grads).physical therapist was listed and I wondered.where is
nursing? Then.I turned to the previous page and noticed another box. "The
Hottest Jobs (No College Degree Required).well I almost dropped my fork.to
my dismay.registered nurses is listed along with sales representatives,
translators, dental hygienists, insurance adjusters, transportation workers,
athletic trainers, auto technicians, and legal secretaries.
Does anyone want to comment about what may be signified by this designation
of nursing?
Kind regards,
Karen Rich

Hi Jacqui, et al
The application form:
Ah - one of those delightful headaches...
Took a bit of doing - at first I thought the formatting would not print
correctly and tried to change it, but i finally gave up and printed it out which
was just fine...
doh - another Homer Simpson moment.
Then I wanted to put it on the MER site - but I either forgot the password or it
got changed - so I had to figure out how to change user passwords... Good stuff
to know in case I want to become a hacker some day... :-)
So, the SRS application is now available at two locations:
On the new MER website at:
http://drtcbear.servebbs.net:81/~martha/2004_SRS_Application-Renewal.doc
<http://drtcbear.servebbs.net:81/~martha/2004_SRS_Application-Renewal.doc>
and if there are problems using that form, as:
http://drtcbear.servebbs.net:81/~martha/2004_SRS_Application-Renewal.pdf
<http://drtcbear.servebbs.net:81/~martha/2004_SRS_Application-Renewal.pdf>
Or on the MER listserver on yahoogroups, at:
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Martha_E_Rogers/files/2004_SRS_Application-\
Renewal.doc
<http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Martha_E_Rogers/files/2004_SRS_Application\

Now these are based on the 2004 version - so if the "Canal Street Station"
address needs to be changed someone needs to let me know what the new address
is...

Ok All,
Here is the most current version of the SRS application/renewal form -
graciously provided by Tracy.
http://drtcbear.servebbs.net:81/~martha/SRS-ApplicationRenewalForm.pdf
I decided to make just a pdf - so that it should print the same in all
environments and for all users...
I will remove the version that is on the LS site so that we don't wind up with
different versions floating around...
Any problems - let me know.

Ok All,
Here is the most current version of the SRS application/renewal form -
graciously provided by Tracy.
http://drtcbear.servebbs.net:81/~martha/SRS-ApplicationRenewalForm.pdf
<http://drtcbear.servebbs.net:81/~martha/SRS-ApplicationRenewalForm.pdf>
I decided to make just a pdf - so that it should print the same in all
environments and for all users...
I will remove the version that is on the LS site so that we don't wind up with

Any problems - let me know.

On the new MER website at:
http://drtcbear.servebbs.net:81/~martha/2004_SRS_Application-Renewal.doc
and if there are problems using that form, as:
http://drtcbear.servebbs.net:81/~martha/2004_SRS_Application-Renewal.pdf
Or on the MER listserver on yahoogroups, at:
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Martha_E_Rogers/files/2004_SRS_Application-\
Renewal.doc
Now these are based on the 2004 version - so if the "Canal Street Station"
address needs to be changed someone needs to let me know what the new address
is...

Subject: [Martha_E_Rogers] Thanks
I sincerely want to hank both Fran and Bear. I am grateful to you for
establishing and maintaining the Martha E. Rogers website, as well as for your
many contributions to the dialogue. You have both made a commitment that has
allowed so many of us to keep in touch with issues of interest concerning the
science of unitary human beings.
Also, thanks to Violet Malinski and Sheila Cheema and now Sonya Hardin and
Martha Bramlett for editing Visions, the Journal of Rogerian Nursing Science.
Again, your efforts are greatly appreciated.
And finally, thanks to all who are, or have been, members of the Society of
Rogerian Scholars. Hopefully, more readers of this site as well as others will
join the society. It is a very important organization whose officers and board
members do so much to move forward the scholarship and further development of
the science of unitary human beings. Don't forget the next conference of the
society to be held in the fall at Case Western Reserve University.
Blessings to all,
Elizabeth
