Dear Dottie-
I don't know how to re-send my original e-mail. Perhaps someone else knows
how (I deleted your question because I have it on my response). It had to do
with seeing levels of abstraction. Mutual process and human field are elements
of unknowable pattern (1st level). Pain, stress, power, etc. are particulate
"aspects" of pattern manifestations (3rd level). If you measure pain, you are
measuring pain, not a unitary concept. (Comfort or well-being maybe)? The
problem is (and always has been) measurement of the 2nd level, unitary pattern
manifestations. Is "energy" (or, in my model), "essence," a 1st or 2nd level
concept? What are the unitary manifestations of pattern, and how can they be
measured? What does spirituality have to do with it?
If we can't answer these questions, perhaps Bear's comment to relook at the
theory may be relevant. Perhaps some of Rogers' needs to be viewed as a
philosophy or a vision, and only helicy, and resonancy etc viewed
theorietically?
Can my model help frame your article? I now see "health" (1st level) as
having two complementary manifestations "wellness" (2nd level) has two aspects
(3rd level)- functional status and symptom distress and "well-being" has three
aspects- healthiness (resources or strengths), flexibility, and harmony.
Measurement of the third level concepts can give you only a partial view of the
second level. Perhaps that is the best we can do right now. But, don't add them
up and call them by a unitary concept name! (All of this is unpublished, and in
process).
All musings, what do you think? I'd love feedback. Hope all is well with
you. Sue
