Howard's earlier message:
"I'm in my research office now on Linn street. It was hit. My office is
downstairs, just some flooding. But upstairs has a lot of roof damage.
The church right across the street is basically gone. The apt.building
next to it is badly damaged. The Starbucks is severly damaged. The
outer wall is leaning and cars are upside down in their parking lot (just
where I would have been parked last night about 15 minutes later . .
had it not been for the warnings). It really is incredible. All my files
and daata is fine . . . but I can't get the computer to work despite
having power. It is a Dell, and a blinking yellow light is on in the
power button. The last time that happened, Justin (our tech guy) had me
unplug it for 5 minutes and then turn it back on. And it worked. That is
not working this time. So, I'm using my laptop now."
People are cleaning up everywhere. I walked around on Riverside drive
where the Tornado hit . . . complete buildings are gone. A lot of the
student apt buildings around Burlington and Clinton street (two block
north of my where my research office is and where I'mk at now) are
extensively damaged. It literally went right through the middle of downtown!!!
I walked down by Riverside drive, the Dairy Queen, Hartwig Auto
dealship, Linder Tir, the Muffler Place . . . all gone. Looking out my window
here, I just can't believe the Catholic Church. It's brick wall fallen
over onto the building next door. The roof is gone. When they showed
this church on TV last night . . . I did not realize it was across the
street from my research office. The university is closed today . . . but
I still got to grade those papers. I won't being to Stabucks though
(not for a while)."
