Howard and All:
What I'd like to suggest is that if anyone would like to respond to the
proposal I sent to the listserv, please do so by Monday, November 7th. If
there is no response or no suggestions for revision of the proposal, I
will draft it in a letter to be sent to the Editors of Visions and request
that they recommend it to the SRS Board through Dr. Fran Biley, President.
I will share the letter with Howard before I submit it and I will submit
it as a joint proposal from the two of us.
How does that sound?
Thanks - Richard

Howard:
Would you like to join me in making a the following proposal to SRS Board
through the Editors of Visions?
That the current and all back issues be scanned
That the issues be housed on a website at University of North Carolina
Greensboro freely accessible to the public
That future issues be submitted for inclusion on the website
I am happy to provide resources for scanning and maintaining Visions on
the website at UNCG. I am happy to provide resources for scanning only
and submit scanned materials to another website that someone else would
manage.
Thanks - Richard
(P.S. Comments/suggestions from listserv members to this proposal are
welcome before submission to SRS Board)

I will make the request . . . But out of the lack of progress on the
issue of getting wider dissemination of Rogerian work . . . I feel, I and
(we), need to find other options but to make the work more accessible. . .

Howard, You certainly have the right to do what you are doing with your
own articles, but it would be nice if you would request permission from
SRS due to the copyright issue. The request should go to the Visions
editors, who can then forward the request to the SRS board; or you can
make the request directly to the board, via our new president, Fran Biley.
Best regards, Jacqui

Yes . . in a similar way . . . I have been saying for some time
that we should place back issues of Visions on the web to people can have
access to them. Copyright or not . . . I have now decided to do this
myself with my own Vision articles. I have been converting all the
articles I've written to pdf files and I am going to put them on my web
site. I am sure that this may be a violation, but right now, I really
don't care. It is prartically useless to keep writing articles when so
few people actually have access to the Journal. I don't think putting back
issues on the web will effect our membership.

I know we have had the discussion before - and may not resolve it in
a
forward thinking direction now - but i think the trend is definitely
moving against inertia in this regard. Here is a link to a story
about
open access journals from BioMed Central a large publisher of
online,
open access journals.
Here is the BioMed Central description of Open Access publishing:
"BioMed Central Open Access Charter
Every peer-reviewed research article appearing in any journal
published by BioMed Central is 'open access', meaning that:
1. The article is universally and freely accessible via the
Internet, in an easily readable format and deposited immediately
upon
publication, without embargo, in an agreed format - current
preference
is XML with a declared DTD - in at least one widely and
internationally recognized open access repository (such as PubMed
Central).
2. The author(s) or copyright owner(s) irrevocably grant(s) to
any
third party, in advance and in perpetuity, the right to use,
reproduce
or disseminate the research article in its entirety or in part, in
any
format or medium, provided that no substantive errors are introduced
in the process, proper attribution of authorship and correct
citation
details are given, and that the bibliographic details are not
changed.
If the article is reproduced or disseminated in part, this must be
clearly and unequivocally indicated.
BioMed Central is committed permanently to maintaining this open
access publishing policy, retrospectively and prospectively, in all
eventualities, including any future changes in ownership.
BioMed Central has established an independent Board of Trustees. If
and when a change of ownership should be considered, the Board of
Trustees will be asked to judge and advise whether sufficient
guarantees to continue a policy of unconditional open access for
research articles are being offered and agreed by any prospective
new
owner. BioMed Central will not enter into a change of ownership
agreement unless the Board of Trustees accepts these guarantees.
Any change in the composition of the Board of Trustees will be
subject
to approval by a majority of the existing members of the Board of
Trustees.
The Board of Trustees consists of the following members:
Brian Haynes, McMaster University, Canada
Steven Hyman, Harvard University, USA
Marc Kirschner, Harvard Medical School, USA
Philippe Kourilsky, Institut Pasteur, France
David Nathan, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, USA
Sir Paul Nurse, Cancer Research, UK
Sir Richard Peto, University of Oxford, UK
Harold Varmus, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, USA
Mitsuhiro Yanagida, Kyoto University, Japan"
