RE: [Martha_E_Rogers] RE: Rogerian Nursing Science wiki

I was at NYU taking courses from 1979 to 1981 - Helen Ference was my
original chair before she left. I remember all this discussion about her
work and the controversy that ensued. In classes we always explored all
the studies that were framed in Rogers - I recall many but in particular
Jacqui's and John Phillips'. In addition, Rawnsley came to teach there in
1980 and I had courses with her. I think what seemed to be the focus on
the uniqueness of Ference's dissertation (by this I mean what was argued
at the time) was the extent to which Ference made the case for the
connection between the theory and the use of canonical correlation as a
"unitary" statistical approach and the development of the Human Field
Motion instrument. We may have varying views on this, but I think it is
more useful to see the dissertations as evolutionary emergents in a sense
and to recognize the contributions of all of this work. I do not find it
useful to distinguish what was Rogerian and not, but rather to describe
how the dissertations evolved. Much of this was influenced greatly by
Martha's thinking at the time and how it evolved - I can imagine that all
these dissertations were confirmed by her as unitary at the time each was
developed - it is likely that she was on these committees - I am not sure.
In addition, much of this was influenced by faculty present at the time -
Newman, Fawcett, Fitzpatrick - to name only a few. Finally, I do not
think we were into deep methodological discussions in those days - it was
beginning to be raised in the early 80s in a more significant way. Martha
was very wedded to more traditional empirical approaches - we just did not
have the kinds of discussions that evolved later. Our conversations were
more focused on the philosophical, conceptual, and theoretical aspects of
the framework - which was where it was most important to be focused -
without that kind of work, methodology discussions would not have the
grounding needed for consistency. I hope this makes sense.

So I would argue for a different way of describing dissertation work
rather than what is true and not - even though previous scholars have made
this distinction, and Howard documents this accurately, I think there
might be room to describe them in an alternative way as a contribution to
extending our understanding of unitary science in the new wiki
translation. It also might be informative to look at the pattern of
dissertation knowledge as a whole rather to see each one as a unique
expression in and of itself. I know later after my dissertation it was
argued that unitary dissertations should be focused across all the
principles of the framework and not limited to one or two.

Thanks - Richard

RE: [Martha_E_Rogers] RE: Rogerian Nursing Science wiki

Hi all:

My understanding of what is considered the starting point of research
grounded in the SUHB come form:

1) My personal conversations with Rogers
2) From my notes taken from her presentations
3) Handouts Rogers provided throughout the 1980s
4) Support from the literature.

Helen Ference (1986) in her chapter in Malinski's (1986) book
"Explorations on Martha Rogers' Science of Unitary Human Beings" stated
the following on page 38.

"In 1977, Rawnsley, of Boston University, framed her research solely
within the Rogerian framework. This study marked a turning point for
research in the Science of Unitary Human beings. For the first time,
hypotheses were derived from the Rogerian conceptual framework> Until this
tim assumptions of the framework were stated in research reports, but many
theoretical frameworks were logically constructed of theories from many
sciences other than nursing. In a strict interpretation, it may be said
that there was no research in the framework prior to 1977."

I based my understanding on this quote . . . which has been restated by
others in the Rogerian literature.

I could add other category for those dissertations prior to 1977, which
would also include those referenced in Rogers 1970 text.
