Having problems with message search?
A genetic engineering researcher's opinion and warning about genetic manipulation of our food. I do not mind experiments that awake dormant genes (through electromagnetic field exposure) as it just uses what is already in the genom of the species. But genetic manipulation, adding, altering or cutting off genes that one does not really know what they are for or what function or program/information they have, is irreversible and irresponsible.
My 2 cents worth of opinion.

when you factor in GMOs in your food then you move into a different orbit. All corn in the US and its derivatives is GM (genetically modified or engineered).
The Indian government is trying to 'modify' all our food crops, something even the US has not tried to do.
Very scary. We need the public to be aware of what is happenning as it is irreversible and will change our dinner plates for all time. The tomato, potato, brinjal, bhindi that you trust will lead to allergies and chronic toxicity over time. You wont drop instantly dead when you eat a GM food but after 20 years when we and our children start to get cancers, they wont source it to the GM food because it will be impossible to prove it. However, long term animal feeding studies done by scientists not connected to the biotech GE companies like Monsanto, show this evidence very clearly. There are other troubling aspects which take this type of 'engineering' into sci-fi like new viruses and combinations of viruses. The reason -- the technology uses these viruses to break the species barrier. So it is already breached and makes the potential for more breaching easier. Its called HGT or Horizontal Gene Transfer. Then, we have really had it.
All this to give patent rights over our seeds to US multinationals like Monsanto, which will profit from third world farmers who lose their seed rights, something they have devloped over 10,000 years of a safe history. As for Monsanto, this is a company with 100 years of a dark history of some of the worst human rights excesses of any corporation. (PCPs, poisoning the water of Anniston knowingly because it did not want to lose a $'s worth of business, agent orange of Vietnam horrors which they assure the US governmetn was safe etc). The odd thing (if indeed it is odd any longer) is that the Indian Govt wants to entrust such a company with our genetic resources. This is like giving the key of your front door to a known felon and going on holiday!
Please circulate as widely as possible. May be I should have done this a long time ago by asking everyone to do likewise.
