Gender statistics on Indian MTs
*****************************************************************
Dear Friends,
This is a special edition - necessitated by two reasons:
1) MTIndia.org was offline for near about 24 hrs on Friday,
unscheduled. This was brought about by an unprecedented
communication failure with our hoisters, which we deeply regret.
2) Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad is involved in a study
sponsored by the Word Bank on 'Engendering ICTs'. In this study they
are exploring the extent to which women the world over are
beginning to participate in and benefit from the ICT (Information
Communication Technology) revolution sweeping the world.
This is an important study that would derive policy implications
for governments and recommendations for the World Bank to ensure
fuller participation of women in the tremendous opportunities being
created in the new ICTs era.
We are participating in the above-mentioned study on behalf of
Prof. Deepti Bhatnagar (IIM, Ahmedabad). As a part of 'Engendering
ICTs' we are conducting a study on Labour Market Participation by
women in the ICT sector. Women's participation in Medical
Transcription, besides other areas where ICT has been used, is an
integral part of this study.
We require recent Data regarding the number of male and female
employees in terms of their 'Skill level' & 'Occupation'.
MALES FEMALES
1. SKILL LEVEL /
OCCUPATION
2. SKILL LEVEL /
OCCUPATION
3. SKILL LEVEL /

(...and so on)
We will do our best to coerce the IIM study team to acknowledge
participating MT Cos, individually in the report. It is needless to
say MTIndia will acknowledge your participation, and the report shall
be published in our publications and other media! I would appreciate
your comments.
The study needs to be finished as early as possible. We, therefore,
request you to send the statistics on or before 6th September. I
would really appreciate an enthusiastic participation. Please
feel free to forward this email to other MT companies.
If you have any queries, please contact Animesh Singh Rathore, who
is directly handling this study at animesh@... OR
feel free to revert to me, as always.
Warm Regards,
Maj (Dr.) Amit Chatterjee, SM

NEWS AND VIEWS :

1) Heartland Information Services Awarded Premier Sourcing Partners
Agreement For Transcription Services to Member Hospitals and Health
Systems
Heartland Information Services, a national provider of medical
transcription services, has announced the signing of a three-year
agreement with Premier Sourcing Partners (PSP), the information
technology unit of Premier, Inc. Premier is a leading alliance of
nearly 1,600 not-for-profit hospitals committed to improving
healthcare quality, enhancing safety, and reducing costs. The
agreement between Heartland and PSP marks the first-ever medical
transcription agreement for all Premier members.
"Good transcriptionists are hard to find in this industry, but
Heartland has a pool of professionals available seven days a week,
24 hours a day and they can deliver results on large scale basis,"
comments Steve Klein, chief financial officer, Health MidWest, a
multiple-hospital organization and Premier member that is currently
using Heartland Information Services. "Heartland has exceeded our
expectations in improving the quality of medical transcription with
our member hospitals in Missouri and Kansas. I think this agreement
will give Heartland the opportunity to grow and they certainly have
the resources and staff to take this on."

2) It's an open house, folks!
Most companies these days follow a practice of pizza-coke session
where the bosses and the subordinates thrash out sensitive issues.
But are companies really as transparent and open-minded about
issues as they project themselves to be? Not really.
Says Sampath, "Transparency is a myth. In a competitive business
environment you have to protect your interest. Most of the times
there is a wide gap between what companies project themselves to be
and what they actually are."
Even within the company, during the heydays of the IT boom, job
aspirants found that what companies promised them (not financially,
but emotionally) was not what they actually got after joining.
Consequently, when the time for dissonance and grievance handling
came, most tech companies showed a level of maturity that you would
associate with a teenager. Cases of employees being shown the exit
door with half a day's notice are not rare. But there are still a
few companies that are discovering the joys of communication.

3) GE-Wipro JV understates loss by Rs 38 cr
General Electric has been going blue in its face saying that its
accounting practices are above board and that stellar numbers it
posts quarter on quarter are based on intrinsic business strengths
rather than on accounting skills.
This argument has been dealt a body-blow in a far flung corner of
GE's empire. In Bangalore, it has come to light that Wipro GE
Medical Systems, the joint venture between GE and Wipro -long
considered the crown jewel of GE's Indian operations - understated
its net loss for the April-June quarter by Rs 38 crore according to
Indian GAAP and Rs 30 crore by US GAAP standards
According to ET calculations the earlier loss would have been
stated at around Rs 4 crore. That WGE has recorded losses itself is
a surprise, because it was touted by its managers as a very
profitable company. WGE had revenues of Rs 812.5 crore in calendar
year 2002 and a net income of Rs 47.8 crore.
GE's auditors are said to be swarming the company's Whitefield
facility and head office and according to sources the chief
financial officer is "on leave".

4) Catholic Healthcare West Hospitals Say `Goodbye to Paper Chase'
with GE's Electronic Medical Record System
Now physicians in the Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) network can
view more than 150,000 patient records electronically from inside
or outside the hospital, so they have "real-time" access to
information right at the patients' bedside.
The advanced system, called GE Centricity(TM) Clinical Information
View from GE Medical Systems Information Technologies, enables
physicians to access comprehensive patient records from the
patient's bedside, or from their offices or homes, using virtually
any computer with Internet access. Northridge clinicians can view
up-to-date patient information through a single system, eliminating
the search and waiting time often associated with paper-based
charts.

5) ACUSIS Adds Organizational Expertise; New Appointments Made in
Quality Assurance, Implementation and Technology
The medical transcription services company ACUSIS, headquartered in
Pittsburgh, has announced the hiring of several new key employees
in the areas of quality assurance, implementation, technology and
systems operations.
The new appointments increase the ACUSIS staff to 32 in its
Pittsburgh office. Globally, the company maintains a workforce of
200 in its Bangalore, Chennai and Mysore locations that provide
medical transcription services to hospitals, clinics and physician
practices throughout the United States.
According to David Iwinski, CEO of ACUSIS, the recent hirings
reinforce the dedicated approach of ACUSIS to enhancing key
capabilities within its business model. "As a growing company, we
recognize the importance of building and maintaining a highly
capable staff not only at the executive level, but in all areas of
the services we provide," said Iwinski.

6) HealthScribe Teams With IQMax To Provide Handheld Dictation
Solutions
HealthScribe, Inc., a leading provider of outsourced medical
transcription service has selected IQMax, Inc., a leading provider
of mobile handheld dictation solutions to enhance its dictation
capture options for customers.
Under the terms of the agreement, HealthScribe will offer its
customers the ability to dictate patient encounter reports via a
mobile handheld Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). Physicians will
no longer be limited to using a telephone or cassette tapes to
dictate, but will now have the option to dictate anytime and at any

of dictation and patient data on a IQMax enabled PDA, physicians
can, at their convenience, securely upload their digitally recorded
dictations to HealthScribe from virtually any PC with Internet

digitally recorded files, single hand use, and no more lost tapes.
Today, most physicians have little time for administrative
activities, the ability of HealthScribe to minimize workflow
disruptions and to seamlessly route dictation will ultimately help
increase physicians time for patient care.
"We are excited about this partnership with HealthScribe and see
this as an ideal dictation offering for physicians and healthcare
professionals, especially with HIPAA on the horizon," said Paul

physicians to cost-effectively send dictation, providing the
highest level of efficiency, security and ease of use."
