Change in membership policies & introducing online continued
education!
*****************************************************************
Dear Friends,
As I have stated earlier, MTIndia was never envisaged as a profit
center for Mediweb. As MTindia becomes financially self
sufficient - we are making membership criteria and options much
simpler, and expanding depth of services for our members.
Salient changes:
Corporates:
1) Maximum fees in any category decreased from INR 15,000 to
10,000.
2) FREE INDIVIDUAL membership to ALL employees of Corporate
Members.
Individuals:
1) Maximum fees in any category decreased from INR 3,000 to 500.
2) No fees applicable if you are an employee with any of our
Corporate Members.
For details see:
http://www.mtindia.org/registration/membership.htm
Any individual or entity, who has earlier paid more than the
present rate, will be reimbursed the difference. Expect your checks
to reach you latest by Sep 15, 2002.
Our endeavor is that in the long run, we should be able to
eliminate the need for individual membership fees, and just rely on
Corporate membership fees and Ad. revenues to professionally run
this site, for the benefit of all. As of today, only 40% of Indian
MT companies have elected to pay - as soon as this figure reaches
60%, we will be able to eliminate the need for individual members
to pay. Please devote a minute to participate in the ongoing poll -
I would appreciate your views, as always!: To vote, please visit:

NEWS AND VIEWS :

1) RP's outsourcing edge over India?
AEOC invited representatives from US companies engaged in medical
transcription services. One of the representatives, named Raul
Kivatinetz, said the Philippines can well tap into the US $8 to $12
billion-a-year medical transcription industry in the US. He said
recent legislative measures in the US have increased the pressure
on medical firms and physicians to digitize medical records, thus
increasing the demand for medical transcription services.
He noted that many companies in the US have gone to India to
outsource their medical transcription requirements "but quality is
not good enough." Another representive from a medical transcription
firm, Linda Fisher, said her company has tried to outsource medical
transcription requirements to Indian firms but find that their
English is quite different from American English. She noted that it
is better to outsource to the Philippines because the output of
Filipino transcriptionists is "closer to American English."

2) HealthScribe plans to introduce work@home!
The survivors in the industry from the thousands that mushroomed a
few years ago were those who were quality- conscious, Mr Nair, COO
said.
HealthScribe itself appointed a consultant, went in for a major
revamp and changed its training criteria last year to become more
process-oriented. The changes showed a "dramatic increase in
productivity," Mr Nair claimed.
By year-end, the company is also considering introducing the option
of working from home.

3) Transcription Turnaround: Heading in the Right Direction?
Medical transcription turnaround reliability is one of the greatest
challenges faced by many health information managers across the
country. According to David Iwinski Jr, CEO of Acusis LLC, a
Pittsburgh, PA-based medical transcription firm, the medical
transcription industry with estimated annual revenues of $12
billion, exists primarily as in-house services. He adds that only
approximately 35% of facilities have contracted with outsourcing
companies for transcription services. "There are tremendous savings
to be had," he says, "but hospitals are often concerned that, even
if good quality transcription could be provided, their own in-house
service would be faster and allow more immediate access to their
medical charts."

4) Mumbai IT industry clicks on 30% growth
Growth has been seen mainly in information technology enabled
services, such as customer relationship management, medical
transcriptions and call centres.
Says Apurva Patel, proprietor of Zenvision Infoworks, a medical
transcription company, "Of late, there's a lot of competition on
the basis of cost-cutting, and many players have come in. In the
near future, we'll be seeing more offerings on the basis of quality
rather than price negotiations. We can also expect forming of an
apex body of ITES companies so that we can cooperate with one
another, not indulge in unhealthy competition."

5) How companies can pay tax-free perks
This is one of those believe-it-or-nots. There are still some ways
in which your employer can provide you with benefits without you
being taxed for them. People who are in the process of negotiating
their salaries, and HR managers looking for ways to reward
employees can benefit by including the following as part of the
terms of employment:

6) Healthscribe India Ltd: Nominated for LBR's 14th edition
Coca Cola India's `Limca Book of Records' (LBR) Assistant Editor
Sangeeta Iyer, in Bangalore recently to gather data on
record-making Bangalore-based companies for the new edition of LBR,
left with her hands full. Pune has held the maximum records as a
city in the LBR, till date. The LBR has invited Bangaloreans to
break the record this year.

7) Computer training institutes rely on IT services
When the bubble burst, most of the computer training institutes
went into red. Some 18 months later, they are back with a bang,
albeit with a new mantra - IT-enabled services, which seems to be
the new money spinner for them.
With the industry trends predicting that IT-enabled services sector
will grow to be Rs 81,000 crore industry in India and generate over
1.1 million jobs by 2008, the once-computer training institutes
have today adorned a new look - all specialising in training the
professionals for back office operations, call centers, banking,
medical transcription et all.
The curriculum and the instructors, they claim are all "foreign" as
the clients are mostly Americans or Europeans who outsource IT work
to India.
