HIPPA, the Anti-Offshore outsourcing brigade and other jokes ;-)
********************************************************
Dear Friends,
Continuing excerpts from an interview with Mr. Ramkrishna Tummala,
CEO, WORLDTECH; the quotes are verbatim. The subject header is ©
Yours truly; so you might consider sparing Mr. Ramkrishna!
"All of us need to follow some systems. I think many of us are
still trying to sort out what the total implication of this will
be, but from I understand, I really don't see any change or
anything, but only thing is we need to follow some systems as per
requirements of HIPAA. For some businesses it might mean changing
the way they work, bring in accountability and transparency of
procedures. Of course, it might mean we need to invest some money
for those things. I am sure the only change it will bring is to
make the business process at this end more efficient."
"Naturally when jobs are going out, there will be lot of
resentment. But, the New Jersey Bill, as of today, they say it's
only for government jobs, but I learnt recently that in the State
of Washington, they don't want to outsource even the private jobs
to India. If that really happens, it is a threat for the Indian
BPO industry, but I am sure there will be some solution tomorrow
for all these things since America is a free country where the
decision will always be weighed in favor of quality and service and
cost efficiency, that is the one country where they don't care
about all these things."
"I still believe for next 10 years there will not be any threat to
Indian MT industry, because of speech recognizing software or other
formatted electronic records. Now I believe that next 10 years
this business is going to be there. There may be a growing merging
of technologies to enhance productivity but the need for core human
input in medical transcription is going to be there for a long
time."
"It is true the hype that was associated initially has died now,
but now in 2003, I am sure MT industry is going to come back with a
bang. But still, if somebody wants to survive just on MT, they can
survive, but there seems to be a lot of scope for other services
that are a spin-off from transcription services that the doctor
needs like medical billing, coding, electronic document management
and retrieval systems. I am sure there is a lot of scope and we
can give lots of services to the doctors. The same doctor can be
our customer in various other areas. But the MT industry is going
to come back again."

NEWS AND VIEWS :

1) CII Suggests Health Tech Parks On The Lines Of STPs
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has recommended setting up
of health technology parks (HTP) along the lines of software
technology parks (STP) to commerce minister Arun Jaitley for
incorporating in the exim policy to be announced on March 31 this
year. It has also been suggested that Indian embassies and
consulates promote the country as a healthcare destination as well
as make it easier to set up hospitals abroad and enable medical
professionals to offer their services overseas.
Other services at HTPs could include medical transcription,
information technology (IT) enabled services in health, bio-medical
services exports and knowledge transfers and assimilation.

2) Pro-active policies boost IT sector: Survey
Encouraged by pro-active government policies, quality manpower and
a competitive private sector, India's software exports grew by a
phenomenal 50 per cent over the last five years to touch Rs 36,500
crore in 2001-02. While software export is a well known success
story, India is now an important venue for many tasks in services
such as financial accounting, call centres, processing insurance
claims and medical transcriptions, the pre-Budget Economic Survey
2002-03 tabled in Parliament said.

3) Medical records going to the Web
The medical transcription business generates more than $10 billion
in revenue annually but it is highly fragmented industry.
MedMT, a San Antonio-based start-up, is looking to change that and
wants to capture some of that business through a Web-based medical
transcription service. The company, founded 18 months ago, is one
of a handful of companies nationwide chasing the online
transcription business.
MedMT has been signing up five new clients a month ranging from
small hospitals to multi-specialty physicians' groups for its
service, said James Slattery, the company's president.

4) SOHO concept will be a big hit here?
In US, the SOHO segment does 80 percent of the medical
transcription work. We believe that if this could happen in the US
and the UK, it could happen in India also. India has many
advantages. India has the largest English-speaking population in
the world. The level of IT literacy is very high in India. We have
maximum number of IT literates sitting idly at home. Their skills
could be used.

6) Outsourcing business support services to Jordan?
The first wave of globalization saw multilateral institutions from
the US, Europe and Japan move the production of clothes,
appliances, electronics and cars abroad. A significant part of the
production chain was outsourced from low-wage countries. The second
wave of globalization, and one of the biggest trends reshaping the
global economy, is the outsourcing of business support services
from developing countries who have an English speaking workforce
with a good number of university graduates and where the salary
structure is way below that of the rich countries. The work is
normally shipped electronically in what has become known as IT
enabled services, or teleworking. India, China, the Philippines,
Hungary, South Africa, Israel, Costa Rica and several other
countries across the developing world have become the new back
offices and support centers for corporate America, Japan Inc. and
Europe's giant companies. There is no reason why Jordan should not
also become an important center for outsourcing business support
services.
