The Supposition Principle

*****************************************************************
Dear Friends,

The Supposition Principle is crucial in all areas of business
communication. It states that "equal time should be given to not
being misunderstood as to being understood." It's designed to
counter the Thirteenth Corollary to Murphy's Law that says "If
anything can be misunderstood, it will."

The difficulty, especially in multi-cultural societies like India
or the USA, is that so many cultural influences shape our
perceptions that what we say is not always what people comprehend.
Let me tell you a story:

Way back, I was serving as the Medical Officer for a body of Gorkha
troops. Good and disciplined troops they were in action, but to our
woe we soon realized that the unit was beating all records for
incidence of STDs. My Commanding Officer tried every trick in the
book to instill the fear of God into them, but to no avail.
Dejected, he handed the issue over to me, to see what I could do.

The reasonable route I thought would be education. My Gorkhali was
quite passable and I started with the first step of teaching them
the advantages of using rubbers. However, seeing the sea of blank
faces staring back at me, I decided a demonstration was warranted.

"This is *IT*," I said holding up my thumb, "and that's how you are
supposed to wear it." After going through the demonstration
thrice, and promising all those who elected to use rubbers an extra
ration of rakshi (rum), I returned happily to my tent,
congratulating myself on a job well done!

The CHM (company havaldar major, an NCO) turned up after two weeks,
obviously distressed. "What's the problem, Thapa?" I asked,
concerned.

"Well, Doctor Sahib, it's about them balloons y'give me last week,"
Thapa replied. "Balloons?" I queried.

"Y'know... them balloons y'give me for my protection! Well, they
didn't work, so I come back like Sahib said to," announced the
old fellow.

Bemused, I probed a little further. "Well, did you follow the
instructions properly and wear one before sex, like I told you to?"
I asked.

"Well, I didn't want to forget." Thapa muttered hesitantly. "Y'see,
so I put it right on the day you distributed it, and haven't taken
it off since!" he continued. "But for all the good it did me, I
might as well've worn it on my P****!" he exclaimed in disgust.

And with that he took off his regulation glove, tore off the rubber
from where it was snugly sitting on his thumb, saluted smartly and
marched out.

Check carefully that what you say can't be misinterpreted,
especially in your marketing communications, including your
advertising. It's diabolically easy to offend or confuse your
customers and prospective customers. It's safer - and easier, in
the long run - to pull back (the Bow and Arrow Principle).

Invest the time and effort to ensure that your message can't be
misunderstood.

Cheers!!!
