NEWS AND VIEWS :

1) Overseas antidote
An army of foreign foot soldiers has stepped up to take pressure
off the overextended U.S. medical system. Offshore radiologists,
medical transcriptionists and medical coders are increasingly
helping U.S. hospitals cope with ever-rising demand for health care
and ballooning documentation demands.
"Probably (offshoring) has made it a tougher market to do business
in," said Beth Tribelhorn, president of Denver-based Preferred
Physician's Transcription, a medical transcription firm. "There is
no margin. Everyone expects you to compete with what an offshore
agency quotes as a cheap price."
"They are trying to level the playing field so that our
international counterparts are held to the same standards as us,"
said Peter Preziosi, executive director of the American Association
for Medical Transcription.
But what happens if 50 out of 200 patients at a community hospital
decide, on a given day, they don't want their data sent offshore?
"The problem is, it's cost-prohibitive," Preziosi said.
Market research firm IDC forecasts that spending on medical
transcription services will rise 16 percent each year, on average,
from 2004 to 2008. And while there are an estimated 200,000 to
300,000 medical transcriptionists in the U.S., even double that
amount couldn't meet demand, Preziosi said.
Nobody thinks offshoring is going to go away. Along with a more
secure paper trail, AAMT would like to set international standards
and require that U.S. and foreign transcriptionists earn a license.
"Right now, anybody can access your medical record, which contains
your deepest, most personal secrets," said Preziosi.

3) Textware Solutions Announces Instant Text Mobile
Textware Solutions announces Instant Text Mobile for Palm OS. The
new program offers a very fast and accurate solution for those who
use a PDA for text-entry: composing emails, taking notes or
preparing documents. The program makes text-entry so much easier
that it is very likely to encourage many users to do a larger share
of their text-entry work directly on the PDA, rather than on a
desktop computer.
Textware is a leading supplier of solutions for very fast
text-entry, with Instant Text for Windows - the leading text
expander solution in Medical Transcription. "With Instant Text
Mobile, a thought which may take 1/10 of a second to form, three
seconds to say, and six to ten seconds to type will now take just
under a second to enter on a PDA," said Jean Ichbiah, president of
Textware Solutions.
