NASSCOM to set up employee database

********************************************************
Dear Friends,

To provide the information technology (IT) industry security from
employee- related frauds, NASSCOM plans to introduce
self-regulation and internal policing in their business practices.

It also plans to set up a database of the employees in the IT and
BPO sector that is likely to lend some teeth to the task of
verifying employee information at the time of hiring.

"The database would keep updated information on employees working
in the industry and employers would be able verify employee
records. The proposal is at an initial stage," Kiran Karnik,
president, NASSCOM, said at the Indo-US cyber security forum legal
seminar.

On the flip side, doesn't that make poaching a wee bit easier? Now
you are giving the head hunters a national database to aim at! :)

As it is, companies have a tough time ensuring that the HR and
systems personnel do not compromise their employee database. Added
to that, employees who resign may give their previous co-worker's
names under referral schemes in the new company - team leaders and
managers can take away the cream - they know the best guys!

Body shoppers and man power consultants are smart and they have
ways and means to compile a list of good employees - here are a few
innovative ways I found being used in the MT industry (and the list
is not exclusive):

1. Put a mole in your front office, where security is lax. If you
are a structured company and have an internal telephone directory,
pray...
2. Have a pick-up system? The drivers have the entire list!
3. Outsourcing HR functions such as salary/insurance etc to banks?
Indian banks blatantly sell their database!
5. Have an access control system? The guy who makes out the card,
has your entire employee database!
6. And the weakest link is your email list on your mail server.

With NASSCOM, and in turn the Govt. having an employee database,
the leak would be too big to plug...

Comments?

Ciao!

1) Healthcare, retail support services to boost BPO industry, says
SPI

Medical transcription, healthcare information management and retail
support services have the huge potential for growth.

One of the companies that is positioning its capabilities in these
areas is the Manila-based SPI Technologies, one of the world's
leading independent business processing outsourcing (BPO)
providers. SPI Technologies president Ernest Cu said the company
would develop second level management teams for both succession
planning and capacity and further enhanced its merger and
acquisition program with planned larger strategic acquisitions.
SPI's healthcare division is currently undergoing a significant
ramp up in its global operations. The recent acquisition of
India-based KG Information Services Private Limited gives SPI
additional capacity for 800 medical transcriptionists.
Complementing the India facility, SPI has opened its second major
medical transcription facility located at Asiatown IT Park in
Lahug, Cebu City with 500 employees.

2) US lauds India's cybercrime fight

It's time for cross-border co-operation in tackling cyber crimes.
US think-tanks are happy with the way cyber crime is being dealt
with in India, according to IT and BPO industry delegation just
back from the US. "Majority is satisfied with India's ability to
deal with cyber crime. Many were pleasantly surprised to know that
a city like Pune has a cyber-crime cell," says Kiran Karnik,
President, NASSCOM.

The NASSCOM delegation discussed the need for cross-border
co-operation in tackling cyber crimes and the potential impact of
criminals illegally obtaining private consumer information. The
current visit focused around reaching out to key regulators,
elected officials in the US Congress and the US Senate, media and
editorial boards, think tanks, leading experts on data security and
privacy and key academics.

NASSCOM officials conveyed the Indian initiatives on amending the
IT Act, training for enforcement authorities and the judiciary,
establishment of a self-regulatory organization and certification
and training programs.

3) Misys Healthcare Systems and CompONE Expand Relationship to
Provide EMR Solution to Medical Practices

Through the alliance, CompONE - a leading provider of medical
billing and practice management services - is adding Misys EMR(TM)
to the suite of Misys applications it offers medical practices. In
addition to the product, CompONE will provide front-level support
and training for the application, as well a variety of proprietary
value-added applications. CompONE currently has about 200 physician
practice clients that already use Misys' practice management
solutions through its ASP services.

"The information technology capabilities required to adopt,
implement and maintain an EMR solution can sometimes be a
significant barrier for smaller medical practices," said Scott
Sanner, vice president of sales for Misys Healthcare Systems. "EMR
through an ASP model, however, can alleviate IT complexities.
Through our long-standing relationship with CompONE, we know they
not only have the infrastructure and experience to service this
market, but they understand Misys products. We're excited to work
with them as they take Misys EMR out to their practices."

4) Transcend Reports a 38% Increase in Revenue and Tenth
Consecutive Quarterly Profit

For the three months ended March 31, 2005, Transcend reported
revenue of $5,319,000, which represents a 38% increase from the
comparable prior year quarter. Gross profit as a percentage of
revenue decreased to 24% from 27%. Net income decreased to $12,000,
or $0.00 per share, from $63,000, or $0.01 per share.

When compared to revenue of $3,901,000 in the fourth quarter of
2004, revenue increased $1,418,000 in the first quarter of 2005 for
the following reasons: (1) an increase in revenue of $1,417,000
attributable to the acquisition of Medical Dictation, Inc. ("MDI")
on January 31, 2005; (2) an increase in transcription service
revenue of $42,000 attributable to new customers; (3) a net
increase in transcription service revenue of $147,000 attributable
to customers served during both quarters; (4) a decrease in
transcription service revenue of $213,000 attributable to customers
that terminated their service contracts during 2004 and the first
quarter of 2005; and (5) an increase in other revenue of $25,000.

The deterioration in gross profit as a percentage of revenue from
27% in the first quarter of 2004 and 24% in the first quarter of
2005 is attributable to the following reasons: (1) MDI's gross
profit as a percentage of revenue is lower than Transcend's
historic levels; and (2) competitive pricing pressure from both new
and existing customers. Further, Transcend has not yet realized the
anticipated favorable effect of its BeyondTXT speech recognition
functionality that was introduced in mid-December 2004.

5) Will Software Fly in CT?

Founder Mark Golino believes salespeople could be more productive
updating customer information by phone. When they call an 800
number using SalesScript, a Web-based "voice to customer relations
management (CRM)" application, they answer a series of questions,
which become digital sound files transcribed by humans and sent to
the client's online CRM system.

"It's very efficient and cost-effective," says Golino, 36, who
started Waterbury-based M-Script Inc. in 2004, merging two other
businesses: a server hosting service and a Web-based transcription
service for doctors to generate electronic documents from dictated
reports.

To improve cash flow during the reorganization, Golino sold his
house last year and moved his family into a rental apartment. "I
always had the idea to take the medical transcription application
into the sales arena," Golino says.
