Why People Quit Their Jobs...
********************************************************
Dear Friends,
There are many reasons why good employees quit; most are
preventable. From my years of experience of handling people, I've
identified a "Top Ten" list of reasons why people leave jobs:
1. Management doesn't allow the rank and file to make decisions or
allow them pride of ownership.
2. Management doesn't have or take the time to clarify goals and
decisions. Therefore, it rejects work after it is completed,
damaging the morale and esteem of those who prepared it.
3. Management shows favoritism and gives some workers better
offices, trips to conferences, etc.
4. Management constantly reorganizes, shuffles people around, and
changes direction.
5. Management promotes someone who lacks training and/or necessary
experience to supervisor, alienating staff and driving away good
employees.
6. Management cuts back on administrative help, forcing
professional workers to use their time copying, stapling,
collating, filing and other clerical duties.
7. Management puts a freeze on raises and promotions, when an
employee can easily find a job earning 20-30 percent more somewhere
else.
8. Management creates a rigid structure and then allows departments
to compete against each other while at the same time preaching
teamwork and cooperation.
9. Management relocates the offices to another location, forcing
employees to quit or double their commute.
10. Management demands that one person do the jobs of two or more
people, resulting in longer hours.
Interesting, isn't it, that all ten factors begin with the phrase
"Management.."
Interesting, too, is just how many of these high-turnover factors
are preventable. My retention survey confirmed the truth of the
saying, "Employees don't quit their companies, they quit their
bosses."
Soft management skills-people skills-are the critical element in
battling high turnover and creating a high-retention workforce or
what I call "retentionship."
And here is ULTIMATE Management Lesson for MTs:
A crow was sitting on a tree, doing nothing all day. A small rabbit
saw the crow, and asked him, "Can I also sit like you and do
nothing all day long?". The crow answered: Sure, why not." So, the
rabbit sat on the ground below the crow and rested. All of a
sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.
"To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very
high up."

NEWS AND VIEWS :

1) Little state work offshore!
"Despite dire warnings from labor leaders about public employee
jobs moving overseas in droves, the state government's outsourcing
of work to other countries is more of a trickle than a flood, the
California state auditor said Thursday.
J.J. Jelincic, president of the California State Employees
Association, said the union will fight the California Performance
Review's proposal to cut thousands of state jobs and outsource lots
of work. The review was conducted by a commission appointed by Gov.
Arnold Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenegger has said outsourcing can help
keep government costs down. Jelincic said outsourcing hurts the
economy.
The auditor also examined the five University of California
campuses that operate medical centers. Controversy hit the UC San
Francisco medical center last spring after a medical
transcriptionist in Pakistan threatened to release patients'
medical records because of a pay dispute. The auditor's report said
UCSF now has its transcription services done in the United States.
Four of the five campuses with medical centers said they've
outsourced medical transcription and other services since 2001. The
exception was UC Irvine.

2) Philips Plans Big Buyback of Its Stock
Awash in cash and practically debt free, Royal Philips Electronics
said Thursday that it would buy back up to 750 million euros ($978
million) of its own stock this year and search for acquisition
targets even as a previous purchase put a dent in its
fourth-quarter earnings.
Philips, the Dutch health care and technology concern, said a 16.7
percent decline in its fourth-quarter profit, to 498 million euros,
was a result of a significant write-down of its stake in MedQuist,
a medical transcription company that is the subject of class-action
lawsuits and investigations by securities regulators.
Philips's fourth-quarter sales rose 2 percent, to 9.18 billion
euros, compared with the same period a year earlier. Both its sales
and net profit results exceeded many analysts' expectations.
Philips had announced the MedQuist write-down of 576 million euros
last November, and it was one of only a few negative notes in
otherwise upbeat annual results.

3) RP medical transcription firms stymied by manpower shortage
The Philippine MT industry lacks enough skilled workers to take
advantage of a projected increase in US spending for outsourced MT
services, the head of a local industry organization has said.
Research firm IDC says that US spending for outsourced MT services
will reach 4.2 billion dollars by 2008, with 16.1-percent annual
growth starting this year.
The opportunity however, "does not change the fact that the
country's MT industry has difficulty getting more of these
opportunities simply because we don't have enough people to fill in
the seats," said Evelyn Abat, president of the Medical
Transcription Association of the Philippines, Inc. (MTIAPI) and
also the managing director of eData Services.
She said that despite significant growth in the local MT
industry-thirty companies are now operating in the country compared
to the fifteen in 2003 - most local MT firms cannot absorb more
work and are forced to turn down offers. MT company has between 30
to 40 medical transcriptionists, but demand from many US medical
firms requires more than twice that, Abat said. Due to the manpower
shortage, companies have resorted to pirating each other's
employees, she said.
"It's dangerous for a company to pirate people because it degrades
their quality of service. What these startups [can] do is to become
subcontractors for bigger MTs first before getting their own
clients. There's more than enough [business] to go around anyway,"
Abat said.
To address the shortage, Abat said MTIAPI was working with schools
that offer MT courses and convincing traditional medical schools to
included MT as a subject.
The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) is
developing a standard curriculum for MT schools, she said.

4) Overseas transcription: I say No!
They didn't know common English names. They didn't know common
American products. They did, however, have every generic and brand
name drug perfect. And their medical terms were also perfect.
For some physicians, this may not matter. But I practice in an area
that is heavily industrial, and around here, any outsourcing of
jobs is a real blow to the local economy. Given the state of our
local job market, I choose to keep any available earnings right
here.

5) Albany Med awards contract to Acusis
In November, all of Albany Med work was awarded to Acusis, which
uses MTs in Bangalore, India.
"This is more than just consolidating transcription work," said Dr.
Fred Venditti, president of the faculty practice at Albany Med. "We
will have electronic access, via our Intranet, to this
information."
He said Acusis was awarded the contract after a year-long process
that included a request for proposals. Of the companies that
responded to the RFP, the Pittsburgh firm had the best digital
capabilities.
Consolidating the contract will save Albany Medical about $100,000
a year, but Venditti said those savings could be erased by more
transcription volume when the new system is up and running. The
hospital is in the process of setting up the necessary computer
network, and will have a two-month roll out the new system
beginning in February. The roll-out will include training the
doctors, who must electronically sign each set of notes, in how to
use the system.
