The return of the MTID...

********************************************************
Dear Friends,

For some time, we have been pressurized to get the MTID back into
our publication schedule. Nevertheless, due to one reason or the
other, we had to unfortunately put this popular publication on
hold.

A good idea *is* a spark, a place to get started. But that's it.
The value is all in the implementation, the thousands of little
things that when done properly add up to a significant cumulative
result. And that's when I decided it was time to call for a pause,
to rejuvenate; with the view to blossom forth again sometime
soon...

The MTID, as our old readers know is a discussion list - a member's
forum. We are looking forward to members helping each other rather
than any individual. We hope that those who love this profession or
are successful in this business will come forward to mentor others,
and be ready to learn as well.

It's very powerful to be motivated by forces other than money. It
gives you awesome tenacity that those chasing money don't have. It
gives you the discipline to give up a quick buck today in return
for furthering a relationship that will yield greater rewards over
the long-term.

So your forum is back, and will go out once a month - on the fourth
wednesday of each month, this time being the Republic Day.

To start again, offshore pricing, may be a good thread. Let me
quote:

"One company attempting to stake a claim in the market is
Transcripro Philippines Inc., a corporate member of both the
American Association for Medical Transcription and the Medical
Transcription Industry Alliance. Transcripro's ad posted on MT
Daily advertises a rate of 4 cents per 65-character line."

2) MedQuist Announces Discontinuation of Ratios and Formulas on
MedRite

MedQuist Inc. announced that as of January 1, 2005 the company has
ceased the use of ratios and formulas as a surrogate for counting
AAMT lines on MedRite, one of its legacy transcription platforms,
and will instead count AAMT lines using a definition supplied by an
industry consultant that the company believes provides a
commercially reasonable interpretation of the AAMT line unit of
measure. MedQuist will be sending letters to all of its customers
that are serviced on its legacy MedRite platform and billed based
on the line unit of measure commonly referred to as the "AAMT line"
informing them of this change.

"MedQuist has taken another necessary step in the process of
resolving its billing issues," MedQuist Chief Executive Officer
Howard S. Hoffmann said. "It is an interim step until we can work
with our customers billed using the AAMT line unit of measure on
our legacy MedRite platform to migrate them to another clearly
defined, verifiable billing unit of measure on our new
transcription platform, the DocQment Enterprise Platform."

4) Acusis Provides Relief to Victims of Tsunami Crisis in India
Associates and Customers Join Efforts Towards Significant Cash
Donation

Acusis®, a leading provider of outsourced medical transcription
services, announced today they will contribute $110,300 to the
victims in need of assistance in India. The financial donation will
be sent to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.
The contribution was made possible by voluntary participation of
the Acusis team in the United States and India. Many associates
generously donated a day's pay. In addition, many have already made
significant contributions to other relief organizations. Acusis'
customers also joined the effort by personally sending additional
relief monies to the Fund created by the company.

Acusis has operations located in four cities in India, including
the city of Chennai where there are over 175 associates. All Acusis
Chennai associates and their families are safely accounted for and
facilities there are conducting normal operations.

"The Acusis global team of over 600 associates would like to
personally express our deepest condolences and sympathy to those
impacted. Although difficult days lie ahead, we hope our
contributions as well as those being made by millions around the
world will offer those affected a chance to rebuild their lives
after this unprecedented disaster," said CEO and President of
Acusis, David Iwinski, Jr.

5) Offshoring Medical Work Saves Lives

It seems like the outsourcing of medical work to India has been
receiving more news coverage. Recently the most eye-catching is the
outsourcing of radiology work. The case of Altoona Hospital in
Pennsylvania illustrates this best.

In response to a sudden overload of emergency cases, Altoona
Hospital decided to outsource some radiology work to India.
Round-the-clock radiology services helped them stabilize the load.

Spurred by a shortage of U.S. radiologists and exploding demand for
sophisticated scans to diagnose scores of ailments, doctors at
Altoona Hospital and dozens of other American hospitals are finding
that offshore outsourcing works even in medicine.

Over the past few years, the number of nighttime emergency cases
was swamping Altoona's seven radiologists.

"Somebody was waking up to cover all this extra work," said
radiologist Richard Wertz. And while that doctor was groggy, "we
didn't have the luxury of that guy taking the next day off."

Using radiologists halfway around the world, where it's daytime,
"solves that problem," Wertz said.

Daniel Drezner finds a deeper implication in this report: This may
mean that there are too few radiologists in America for onshore
specialists to fill the demand.

Medical transcription is a hot outsourcing industry. Offshore
consultants download audio files of doctors' reports via secure
Internet transfer, and proceed to convert the information to text.

But even when the spotlight was on medical transcription, there
were concerns regarding the security of transfer of patients' vital
medical data, and the quality of service delivered by offshore
consultants. The Charlotte Observer article linked above quotes Dr.
David Turner, chairman of diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine
at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, in saying that no
U.S. hospital would risk hiring untrained, unskilled doctors
overseas, considering the concern about medical errors and
malpractice lawsuits.
