*****************************************************************
THREE SIMPLE OBJECTIVES

Dear friends,

For many businesses, January and February are quiet times, as work
slows while key clients are on vacation.

It is an opportune time, then, to reflect back on the highs and
lows of the previous year, divine any lessons to be learnt and
devise strategies for the year ahead.

In addition to doing the "big picture" thinking - detecting
business and market trends and the opportunities they create - it
is also a great opportunity to look internally and assess whether
there are any aspects of your business that you could be doing
better.

(Ideally, we'd have the time to do this on an on-going basis, but
alas...)

A simple phrase - IT BECAME FASTEST - offers a handy mental "cheat
sheet" for doing internal reviews:

(I)mprove basic efficiency - all the time.
(T)hink as simply and directly as possible about what you're doing
and why.
(B)ehave towards others as you wish them to behave towards you.
(E)valuate each business and business opportunity with all the
objective facts and logic you can muster.
(C)oncentrate on what you do well.
(A)sk questions ceaselessly about your performance, your markets,
your objectives.
(M)ake money; if you don't, you don't do anything else.
(E)conomize, because doing the most with the least is the name of
the game.
(F)latten the company, so authority is spread over many people.
(A)dmit to your failings and shortcomings, because only then will
you be able to improve on them.
(S)hare the benefits of success widely amongst those who helped you
to achieve it.
(T)ighten up the organization whenever you can - because success
tends to breed slackness.
(E)nable everybody in the business to use their individual powers
to the fullest possible extent.
(S)erve your customers with all their requirements and desires to
standards of perceived excellence in quality.
(T)ransform performance by constantly innovating in products and
processes - including the ways in which the business is managed.

(Source: Goldfinger: How Entrepreneurs Grow Rich by Starting
Small, R. Heller)

Some entrepreneurs eschew such "cutesy" lists, figuring that if the
process of creating wealth can be reduced to a handful of simple
rules, then there'd be a lot more wealthy individuals than there
currently is today.

They're wrong. Running a successful business is not "rocket
science". Most of the time it requires little more than common
sense. As I've mentioned in past issues, however, common sense is
somewhat uncommon!:)

Making your business more successful in 2003 requires that you
focus on three simple objectives:

1. Increase sales.
2. Decrease overheads (by reducing costs and improving efficiency).
3. Increase profit margins.

Forget fads. Ignore the utterings of charismatic CEOs and
I-Will-Make-You-Rich evangelists. Before each and every decision
you make, or action you carry out, ask yourself which of these
three objectives it meets. If it doesn't meet any of them, don't
waste your time - do something that does.

The three objectives sound simple enough.:) Do you have any
additional comments?

Regards,

Maj (Dr.) Amit Chatterjee, SM

From: Anul Shelke <a_shelke@...>
Subject: HIPAA

Dear Dr. Chatterjee & MTIDers,

I am Anulkumar Shelke who works from home as a medical
transcriptionist. I have been doing this work since a year. I have
come to know from some sources that Home Based Work is totally
going to be shut down, due to the insecurity felt about the
patient's privacy and confidentiality by the US Health Department.

I would like to know what exactly HIPAA is. Why is that the US
Department of Health and Human services feel it would not be safe
to out source work to people who work from home? Why would any one
leak out the personal information of any individual whom he has not
even seen?

It will be very nice of you if you could provide me with the
information regarding HIPAA, the rules, and what will happen about
the MTs who work from home. What measures can be taken to get rid
of this.

Awaiting for a reply as early as possible

Yours truly,

Anulkumar Shelke

[MODERATOR COMMENT]

Dear Anulkumar:

If you search the archives of this digest, you will get the
required information. Also it is available on the net from both
AAMT and MTIA, on payment.

<Why would any one leak out the personal information of any
individual whom he has not even seen?>

Two reasons come to the mind:
1) Ignorance
2) Greed

Subject: A US Company's Credibility

Dear Sir,

I am into MT industry since more than 3 years now and have been
doing home based MT since over 4 months now.

Recently, I came across a US-based company, which, after taking my
test is now ready to provide me home based work.

Their tems are: The rate agreed upon is 5 cents per line (WITHOUT
spaces) and it would be halved in cases wherein my accuracy would
be <95%. The pay check would be given out once a month on 15th of
the month for work done in previous month.

I want to ascertain whether the company and/or its promoters are
genuine and good paymasters or not. This is very important because
now-a-days I read a couple of articles in your newsletter about
scamsters.

Here are the details which would be helpful to you in getting to
their roots.

COMPANY NAME: Beckman Typing Medical Transcription, Inc.
ADDRESS: 12142 157th Street North, Suite 7
Jupiter, FL 33478

Toll-free: 1-877-551-1298
Fax: 1-561-828-2348

website: www.beckmantyping.com

I have had all the correspondence with : Susan Clum, MT QA
Supervisor of this company.
NOTE:The contract I received from them did not even carry their
address. I got the above details upon specifically requesting them.

I would proceed only after hearing from you in this connection.

Yours Sincerely,

Paras Parekh

[MODERATOR COMMENT]

Dear Paras,

We have no knowledge about this company - good or bad. Maybe others
on this list can enlighten you.

However, I cannot see a contract not having an address. It may be
an oversight, but be sure it is included before you sign up.

As you have ventured out on your own, these will be just the sort
of business decisions you will have to take. Risks are an inherent
part of business, and until the money is in your bank you can never
be sure:)

Subject: Medical Transcription

Dear Sir,

I am a soldier and fighting for the cause of about 500 medical
transcriptionists rendered jobless by Medical Transcription
Institutes in Nasik (Maharashtra). The lured the public by promises
of 100% job opportunities, recovered the fees for the
training from 15000 to 30000/-, gave the most inferior type of
training, and then without entering into the production, just
closed down their institution.

I am fighting a case in the consumer court. Major Amit Sir, I wish
you can help me answering some questions.

Will you please help me? These institutes have brought a bad name
to the sacred profession of Medical Transcription, which I cannot
tolerate and I wish to expose them in the society.

A soldier is requesting for help to a soldier personally. Army
oficers do reply the communications immediately. I shall wait for
a response from you.

Sincerely yours,

Major PM Bhagat

[MODERATOR COMMENT]

Dear Major,

We have been using our ezines/forums to spread the word, and we are
ready to help you in any way. Firstly, make them proove that they
had furnished the required books, software, hardware in its full
complement. Then make them proove if they had qualified staff. If
either, or both were not made available, that is enough evidence of
malafide intention, with a view to dupe the public.

As far as the "job gurantee" is concerned - watch out for the small
print in "conditions apply." Are there any production centers
functioning at Nasik or near about? They might be interested in
fresh entrants, but it may happen that you will have to start from
scratch.

One thing is clear to many of us, regarding a training schedule of
4-6 months. You cannot train a fresh MT in English, in that period
of time. In most cases I have seen, the candidate was not suitable
because of poor English skills, and the career prognosis will be
guarded in such cases. A genuine institute will have a selection
procedure; but the same cannot be expected from fly-by-night
operators. Believe me, there are similar problems in the US.

Best regards, and let us know how we can help

From: [Details witheld on request]
Subject: Beware of Greg Wells of Promed Las Vegas

Dear Amit & MTIDers,

We write this to warn fellow Indian MT Companies about the
activities of Greg Wells of Professional Medical Transcription LLC
based at Las Vegas.

We had been doing transcription for a company with a duly signed
contract.

Professional Medical Transcribing LLC
Suite 469 , 8635 West Sahara Ave
Las Vegas Nevada
USA 89117

This belongs to Greg Wells or at least he is the person dealing
with us

This has been going on since April 2002 and he had been steadily
increasing the volumes and paying about a month or so late , He had
been steadily and rather smoothly building up the dues to us and as
on 15 Dec 2003 we found that the dues from him was :

Total Due $ US 13,403.84

When we were regularly following up the payments he was giving
various reasons such as he was travelling abroad, he will be
sending sums next week and that our track record has been
impeccable and that he is sorry for the delay etc etc

In Dec when we finally started insisting we pay he stopped
responding to mails and his telephone is perpetually on voice mail.

His modus operandi is simple - he keeps increasing volumes while
praising the service providers work, gives inoccuous excuses for
delaying payments , kids you along and before you know it have 3
months receivables soon after which he stops answering your mails,
his phone goes on voicemail and you are left to take vicious steps!

As of date he owes us $ US 13,404 /- for which we have launched
unusual collections proceedings.

We would rather our name be not published on MT India but a general
warning may be issued in the interests of other service providers.

Regards

[MODERATOR COMMENT]

Dear fellow MTSOs,

We had printed a caution notice in our newsletter dated 14 Sep
2002, after similar reports coming in from two other Indian
companies. It is amazing how this company is talking one Indian
company after another, for a merry ride. It also hurts us as this
individual used the free services of MTIndia, to contact Indian
companies. It is unlikely that he wants to stay in this business,
and in all probability I can see him filing for bankruptcy soon;
and just walking away.

Let us try to consolidate and fight jointly on this, and maybe we
shall get justice.
