Dear Amit,
You have been acting for long as the only lighthouse
for otherwise completely unorganized Indian medical
transcription industry. Long back we had floated this
idea of IAMT working as the voluntary organization,
slowly gaining reputation and recognition among the MT
industry as MT India has gained in India and AAMT in
USA, and setting standards for all the fields related
to transcription in India. I fail to understand why it
has not gained momentum as yet. I am sure there are
others like me who would give you total support and
cooperation if you take initiative.
Regarding Rina's query, I am willing to help any way I
can.
Thanks.

[MODERATOR COMMENT]
Dear Alok,
You have actually spelled out the problem: I am not looking for
support - I am looking for the go getters who will implement it:) I
have been offering our support in anyway I can.
Inspite of Indian business owners drawing all the flak whenever
anything goes wrong in the Industry, the Indian MT has to share the
blame equally. With this industry > 8 years old now, it is time
that the professionals rear their heads and volunteer to contribute
to the profession as a non-profit motive. Sadly today, I find many
MTs who are skeptical about the future of the profession and
industry per se.
Maj (Dr.) Amit Chatterjee, SM is not an MT by profession - he is a
businessman. By that defination alone I consider myself not
qualified to lead such an endeavor. The professional MT has to
stand up and volunteer to contribute quality time and money for the
success of the organization.
You ask me for support and I'll throw my weight behind you, FWIW.
Regards,
Amit C.

Subject: MTCC dissolution
Hi Amit
In reading what you wrote about MTCC
dissolution, that is true. However, this has
taken place in order that there will be a new
and more efficient CMT examination, one which
can be taken electronically and scored
immediately at the testing site. So as you may
be aware by now, this is a really positive
thing. Sometimes the old things have to be
dissolved in order to make way for the new. I am
really looking forward to seeing this exam made
available to more people.
Your friend,
Ann C. (Tina) Barton, CMT

[MODERATOR COMMENT]
Dear Ann,
My best wishes to AAMT, and I hope the CMT exam can be taken by
more people globally in the near future.
However in the meantime, I see no harm in trying to organize
ourselves.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Best regards,
Amit C.

Subject: Standards for MT Industry
Hi Major and all:
This refers to Dr Bharadwaj's querry relating to salary levels in
Delhi. While we are it I would request the same study can be done
for Bangalore too.
I find there is a huge disparity in the levels of MT Staff
(including Proofers/Editors) salaries from company to company and
there seems to be no standard for reference. Same way for
productivity too. I often hear that the industry standard for an MT
is 500 lines per 8 hours of work but I dont know how this figure
has been arrived at. I read in American MT Magazine the
productivity is 10840 characters per hour for an MT there.
Can someone enlighten me on this?
Thanks
A. Sundararaman

Subject: MT salaries in DELHI
Dear Amit,
I learnt from some people that companies like Heartland are giving
cash bonus etc. in the range of Rs. 15,000- Rs. 20,000; every
quarter, in order to retain and motivate thier staff of MTs and
QAs.
Is it true? If so can you please throw some light on this.

Dr. Sadhna Bharadwaj

[MODERATOR COMMENT]
Sundar,
I am guessing that you have not been in the Industry too long:)
Companies in India get work at 3 to 22 cents per line. That is a
variable which will affect salaries. Also work done/capabilities
are quite variable. The fact is that there is no animal known as
the "average MT" whether in India or the US.
Sadhna, MTs in Heartland are one of the most disgruntled lots by
their own admission, due to "non-existent management." Now don't
grudge them their bonus - they deserve something at least!:)

Amit C.
