I'm new and my father has been dealing with a staph infection for
nearly 2 years now. He had back surgery in June '03 and the
infection has been at the site off and on ever since. He had the
hardware from the original surgery removed, a bone graft placed (which
they now think has become part of the sustaining infection - talk about
removing that too but it's not decided) and over 7 surgeries so far this
whole time with pockets of infection, debilitating pain and months of
hospitalizations. He had been infection free since October last
year and about two weeks ago started feeling the familiar pain and yes,
it's back. He is on some new antibiotic that wasn't available
before. It's gravity fed to his PIC line instead of pumped.
It's different and new but right now I don't know what it is,
sorry. It's supposed to be the latest and greatest thing.
We're hoping it'll do the trick not only because he NEEDS to get better
and stay better (enough is enough!!), but this long being ill has really
put a hardship on my parents because dad can't work. The infection
causes him severe back pain, and he had a back problem in the first
place! All in all, dad just needs to get better.
I'm curious what the real difference between MRSA and MRSI are because
his infectious disease specialists always call it MRSI. MSRA
however actually has some info available online, not so much so for
MSRI. The Vanco was the only thing he could use before, now he's
trying this new drug because it's finally an option. Is the MRSI
resistant to everything and MRSA more treatable?
Also, if anyone has any words of advice or wisdom I can pass along, I'd
be eternally grateful. If there's ANYTHING else he can do to help
his body fight and win this battle, please let me know. I'm open to
any and all suggestions at this point. If you know of something he
should be doing, or taking, or anything please suggest it. My dad
is 56yo and we're in Portland, OR. He's under the care of docs at
OHSU.
Thanks!
Kori
My father's lab report showed
his MRSA was sensitive to Linezolid,
Gentamicin, Trimeth/Sulfa, Tetracycline along with Vancomycin.

I have heard that Linezolid is an alternative to vanco, and has actually better results. I hear it is extremely expensive though. Hope this helps. God Bless....
