I believe that what my comment said was
"However...I do agree that we all need to take some ownership in our
own health and always ASK HC members to wash or sanitize before they touch
you"
At no place in the message does it say take control over your own
safety...but personally, I am sure that I do that as well on a most regular
basis. Of course, encourage my family to do the same.
Our society in general is one of the most unhealthy in the nation and it
should be quite the opposite. In Beijing, they go to see a HealthCare
provider to stay healthy...if they get sick, they fire their physician.
We tend to go only to seek medical care after we are ill and as a whole, our
society tends to fail to practice disease prevention. If we all took a
little more ownership for our health and wellness (as a whole) we could well
have less issues. Likewise..if we all were more cognizant to doing what we
can to stay healthy.. The awareness would spill over into all areas of ones
life.
I teach people to take ownership and to not be afraid to speak up.whether it
is asking what this pill is for or asking someone to please wash their
hands..either way it will benefit me and my health when I do so and hence
divert a potential problem.
I find it of interest that you tend to lump all facilities and practitioners
into the same pot....(so to speak). I have yet to see a hospital
associated MRSA but am not at all confidant that I will be able to say that
in another 20 yrs. I hope that I can, but getting physician to utilize good
hand washing (or hand washing at all) is one undertaking that remains a
challenge regardless of which organization or other environment/location I
am working in. Meanwhile, I shall continue to educate healthcare workers on
best practices and will also continue to empower patients and their families
to "just ask" if they do not witness good hand hygiene and to practice
wellness.
Thanks for the note.

Hi Caryl,
I agree with you completely ! It is not the responsibility of the
patient to insure their safety, it is the responsibility of
healthcare workers to follow CDC guidelines for contact precaution,
etc ( however lax they are ). A patient now must speak up and insist
a healthcare worker wash their hands and put on gloves to protect
themselves and clean equipment ( i.e. stethoscope) in their presence
and this puts the patient in a precarious position, doctors and some
healthcare workers bristle at the reminder and get defensive. I have
personally encountered this behavior. But patients must be pro-active
to protect themselves, unfortunately, because we can not trust
healthcare workers to do the right thing. Our very lives are at risk.
It is the failed ( lack there of) leadership by the CDC, APIC and
SHEA to educate, monitor and enforce contact precautions and
decontaminating the environment.
I believe, Mary, that you are an APIC ( Association of Professionals
in Infection Control) member, so your attack on patients is typical
of your organization ( you drink their Kool-aide), blame the victim
mentality when your failed organization is the main problem.

matter of fact. I am a surgical RN. I got my MRSA infection from
the very hospital where I worked and was a patient and where I was
also fired for reporting them to OSHA for violating my right to wear
PPE. Unfortunately, OSHA sided with the hospital. What a sad, sad
commentary on the state of healthless care in the United States. To
lay the burden on patients is absolutely absurd. It is time we all
woke up and demanded that health care providers DO THEIR DAMN
JOBS!!!!
