زیر در مورد تعداد موارد ایدز در ایران توجه فرمایید. دلیل این مکاتبه این است که گزاره های اشتباه راجع به موضوع به کرات شنیده و خوانده می شوند.

تا دی ماه 1385 (فوریه 2007) حدود 14 هزار مورد اچ آی وی در مرکز مدیریت بیماری های وزارت بهداشت ثبت شده است که موارد «اچ آی وی / ایدز» یا «اچ آی وی و ایدز» یا «اچ آی وی (شامل ایدز)» می باشند. از میان این 14 هزار نفر، فقط حدود 900 مورد آن ها «ایدز» داشته اند (یعنی مرحله نهایی بیماری).
نتیجه 1: این گزاره که «-در-ایران-14000-مورد-ایدز-وجود-دارد-.» بسیار غلط است زیرا افتراق بین «اچ آی وی» و «ایدز» را در نظر نگرفته و در واقع موارد ایدز را حدود 15 برابر بیشتر (از حدود 900 مورد) اعلام می
کند.
طبیعی است که همانند اکثر سایر بیماری ها، نظام مراقبت نمی تواند حساسیت 100% برای کشف همه موارد اچ آی وی داشته باشد. (برای دقیق تر بودن، موارد اچ آی وی غیر از ایدز، یا قبل از مرحله ایدز). بنابراین تعداد موارد کشف و ثبت شده باید در یک ضریب مناسب تصحیح ضرب شوند تا برآورد تعداد واقعی موارد اچ آی وی به دست آید. ضرایب تصحیح برای موارد اچ آی وی در ایران که بیش از
همه مورد توافق هستند، حدود 5 (تا 7) می باشند. ] 1 [چنین برآوردی، تعداد موارد اچ آی وی در ایران را حدود 70 هزار نفر به دست می دهد. برآورد های بین 60 تا 70 هزار نیز با تعداد موارد کشف شده 12 تا 13 هزار بوده اند.
نتیجه 2: این گزاره که «-در-ایران-50-تا-60-هزار-مورد-ایدز-وجود-دارد-.» بسیار غلط است زیرا افتراق بین «اچ آی وی» و «ایدز» را در نظر نگرفته و در واقع موارد ایدز را حدود 70 تا 80 برابر بیشتر (از حدود 900 مورد) اعلام می کند.

Please kindly notice the following results about number of AIDS cases in Iran. The rationale for this communication is that wrong quotations about the number of AIDS cases in Iran are heard and read frequently.

Until the 10th month of year 1385 (February 2007), Center for Disease Control of MOH-Iran has registered nearly 14’000 HIV cases, that is “HIV/AIDS” or “HIV
AND AIDS” cases, or “HIV including AIDS” cases. From within this 14’000, only about 900 cases have been AIDS (the final disease stage) cases.
CONCLUSION 1:
Therefore the statement “-There-are-14’000-AIDS-cases-detected-in-Iran-” is terribly wrong, since it ignores the differentiation between HIV and AIDS, and induces a near 15-fold misconception and
miscommunication about the number of AIDS cases (that is only near 900)!
Quite naturally, and as for most other disease conditions, the surveillance system may not have a 100% sensitivity to detect all the HIV cases. (To be more precise, HIV cases excluding AIDS cases, or HIV cases before the AIDS stage). Therefore the detected numbers must be multiplied by an appropriate correction factor to yield the estimate of the actual number of HIV cases. The most widely accepted estimates of such correction factor for HIV in Iran are around 5 (to 7) [1]. This estimate would give a number of 70 thousand HIV cases in Iran (including the nearly 900 AIDS cases). The formerly quoted estimate of 60-70 thousand was based on
the near 12-13 thousand detected cases.
CONCLUSION 2:
Therefore the statement “There are 60-70 thousand AIDS cases in Iran” is terribly wrong, since it ignores the differentiation between HIV and AIDS, and induces a 70 to 80-fold misconception and miscommunication about the number of AIDS cases (that is only near 900)!
