While I was at the PPMD conference last month, I ran into a
women who is the South African PPMD. She was telling us about how bad it
is there when it comes to getting powerchairs for DMD boys. They have to
pay completely out of pocket, there is no insurance to help.
I just wanted to put this out to the groups. When your
son gets a new powerchair, what do you do with the old one? In the past,
I have always given Jason’s to
the MDA loaner closet. This time, I’m giving it to Maxine in South Africa.
They will pay for shipping. Of course, if there can be more than one
chair, then the costs will be less per chair. I still have Jason’s old chair from 3 year ago. So, is
anyone has a chair they are no longer using, would you please consider donating
it the PPMD South Africa.

Great. I was planning on doing the same
with Jason’s old chair, But just
trying to get it charged has been a problerm. He hasn’t used it since getting
the new chair.

Our ministry can buy manual wheelchairs for $250 each in Kenya and that's loads cheaper than here in the US. I would imagine power chairs are cheaper there as well. We'll keep a lookout for a power chair, if it were a manual chair of course we would purchase one for the young lady. Let us know if we can do anything else. Blessings!

I can’t speak from any personnel
experience, but I was told that any donated chairs would go directly to a boy
with DMD.

Does PPMD in South
Africa donate the chair to other boys or are
they sold to them? Many places in Africa
get Donations and then sell them cheap.

I still have Alex's chair. It won't charge but there are two possible reasons. The first (and most likely reason) was that the kill switch wiring was bad. Nathan had the same kill switch and the same issues with it not charging.
The second possible reason is that the vendor said since it has not been run for several years the chair doesn't recognize the battery. I felt that it was the first reason because it happened while Alex was still alive too.
Neither of which I can fix but seem to be simple issues (Nathan's was fixed fairly quickly). Do you think that would be an issue? Do they do any updates the chairs may need? Some used chairs may need new tires or batteries, etc.
It is a good larger chair that could fit teen or adult. I have the vent battery tray too.

At this time, I think if we can get them a
few chairs, it isn’t going to matter in how bad a shape they are in.
What ever needs to be fixed is going to be a lot cheaper than buying the chairs
in the first place.
If I can tell Maxine that we have about
3-4 chairs, she would be delighted.

I didn't have a vent tray for Alex. We had this thing that looks sort of like a back pack and we hung that on the back of the chair in a way that when he tilted it back it would still hang down. It was hard to access the filter or to remove the plastic shield that covered the the buttons which we used when he went to school so I think we took it back out of the pack and hung it using the strap on top of the vent.

I think I know whatcha mean..Tracys chair tilts too and he doesn't like the vent that has a handle so we are trying to find a way to use the other one when he is in the chair..we got one tray but it sticks out too far too make turns in the house..I am thinking that if it doesn't hurt to hang it with the controls facing up that we might could work that out with some heavy duty swing type locks...etc.. it has handles on each side...
