MDA has decided to cancel Summer Camp nationwide due to
heightened fears of the Swine Flu at the last minute. My nephew is
extremely upset and I’m very angry. The camp director was in tears
when she called my sister to let her know what happened. He was supposed
to go to camp tomorrow and had everything ready for days. All of the
counselors and volunteers were already at camp when they found out. All
the food and supplies are paid for and already to go and now to waste.
All the months of planning shot to hell. They should have made this decision
weeks if not months ago. This Swine Flu thing has been blown way out of
proportion. Not only is it no worse than the regular flu, it isn’t anywhere
close to the regular flu in numbers. The regular flu kills on average
36000 people in the US every year, the H1N1 swine flu has only killed 87.
The numbers just don’t add up. It’s the time frame that
bothers me the most. Not to mention that 17 year olds were on their last
year of camp are now screwed out of it.

Yes, this is a population at risk so it's best to be cautious. But it's still a disappointment for those who won't be able to go, especially for the 17 yr olds.
Btw, my son is at camp until this morning & I just found out via the MDA website that there are 6 suspected cases w/ one in the hospital from his camp here in PA. They had called to tell us on Thurs. some campers/counselors had gone home w/ a sore throat & fever but said if it was up to us if we wanted to pick up our son b/c he didn't have any symptoms. He didn't so we didn't. I never thought it might be swine flu.

I am not on a high horse and I AM one of those kids, I am 28
years old with DMD. I didn’t personally attack you or anyone on his
list, I was stating my opinion. I am certainly aware of the risk involved
with the flu and I personally understand your concern with your daughter.
My main concern was the timing and the effect the cancellation on the campers,
the counselors, the volunteers, the wasted donations, etc. You can be
assured that all planned fundraisers will continue along with client participation
regardless of the Swine Flu threat.

If I really thought it was ONLY about the kids, I would be fine with it. I think it was more about their bottom line and their fear of being sued should a kid contract swine flu. You take no more of a risk getting swine flu at camp than you do at school or church, etc. If a parent is that worried about swine flu, they could have simply opted not to send their child. For the rest of the kids, have the parents sign a waiver not holding Mda responsible should a kid contract it.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Schools were not closed,
malls were not closed, parks were not closed, this should have been left up to
the parents, the decision was likely made only to protect from potential
lawsuit not to protect the kids. Each camp should have been handled on a
case by case basis. This is just another example of an organization,
government or otherwise protecting people from themselves and taking it out of our
hands for the “greater good”.

In Ohio there were schools that were closed for 2 weeks, events were cancelled,
and expect more once flu season does hit - I saw a news story where they are
talking about cancelling Sunday church services, sporting events and other
gathering places where people go once the fall comes around.
I'd rather have my son be stuck at home for a week than in a hospital for a week
or longer.
Greatest good for the greatest numbers, yep, sounds like a good plan to me.

If it was a CDC decision, as you say, then why did a friend of mines child with cancer leave for a week of camp today? Why would the cdc decide to shut down mda camps "for the health and safety of the kids" and NOT shut down a camp for kids with cancer? This was an mda decision.....I have seen way too much and talked to many people(Mda employees) who will tell you that the bottom line for them is always money.

How many cases of swine flu have came to light at cancer camps?

I have no idea. My point is...those kids are even MORE immunocomprimised than most all of our kids. So explain to me HOW this was a CDC decision and NOT an MDA decision? Also, ask yourself this....MDA does ALOT of its fundraising based on their camp. Where is the camp money going to? the kids who arent going to camp? I am going to guess not....maybe more into their $10million dollar building?

If it was a CDC decision, as you say, then why did a friend of mines child with cancer leave for a week of camp today? Why would the cdc decide to shut down mda camps "for the health and safety of the kids" and NOT shut down a camp for kids with cancer? This was an mda decision.....I have seen way too much and talked to many people(Mda employees) who will tell you that the bottom line for them is always money.

There could have been parent waivers or any other disclaimers and camp would have still closed.
The timing is unfortunate and the frustration is evident, so instead of pointing fingers
take the week to make it as special as you can for the kids. For the 17 year olds, maybe MDA
can make a one time exception next year. If not, I'll be happy that my son missed this camp and
celebrate his 18th birthday next year in lieu of grieving and saying well at least he got to go to camp
I wholeheartedly agree with you. Schools were not closed, malls were not closed, parks were not closed, this should have been left up to the parents, the decision was likely made only to protect from potential lawsuit not to protect the kids. Each camp should have been handled on a case by case basis. This is just another example of an organization, government or otherwise protecting people from themselves and taking it out of our hands for the “greater good”.

There are thousands of all kinds of camps going on and other than one boy scout camp (10 confirmed and 9 suspected cases
out of 700 kids) noone is reporting the prevalence of numbers as the MDA camps. If it was a pure bottom line decision they
could have used the CDC guideline reccomendations for youth camps as a prescedent to cancel camps
and sight that these kids are a higher risk than most. It wasn't till the dispproportionate numbers came
to light that the decision was made. Alot of money that will not be recovered as expenses for the camp has already been spent
on food, materials, equipment etc. Do I believe MDA is a financially frugal and ethical (with money) organization, no I do not.
If part of the decision to cancel camp was financial, because if they had remained open in opposition to the CDC reccomendation
they would have been sued even with parent waivers then I still support the decision as paying for such a lawsuit would have
been drawn from the same monies. Money that will likely be used for waste of time surveys, redundant research, deep pockets
and maybe a building or too. Either way the decision was out of our hands, it does no good to speculate. They will need to have answers,
telethon is just a couple months away.

MDA has decided to cancel Summer Camp nationwide due to heightened fears of the Swine Flu at the last minute. My nephew is extremely upset and Im very angry. The camp director was in tears when she called my sister to let her know what happened. He was supposed to go to camp tomorrow and had everything ready for days. All of the counselors and volunteers were already at camp when they found out. All the food and supplies are paid for and already to go and now to waste. All the months of planning shot to hell. They should have made this decision weeks if not months ago. This Swine Flu thing has been blown way out of proportion. Not only is it no worse than the regular flu, it isnt anywhere close to the regular flu in numbers. The regular flu kills on average 36000 people in the US every year, the H1N1 swine flu has only killed 87. The numbers just dont add up. Its the time frame that bothers me the most. Not to mention that 17 year olds were on their last year of camp are now screwed out of it.
I think you can be upset about camp closing and just as concerned about your childs health. Just because you know it's for their own safety doesn't take away from the fact that you have to see your child upset about not going and two days notice does not help people who plan trips or other things that now require a cancelation, often with a loss of finances or nurses who have other plans. I think that the last minute notice is the part I would have had an issue with. I spent most of my sons week at mda camp (I am in Indiana and he had his the second week of June) with my other son in the hospital. Other wise I don't get to stay with him much because I only have an aid for 4 hours a day when one of them is not home.

For me my main complaint was the last minute decision because it
was very upsetting to campers prepared to go and it was inconsiderate towards
the local chapter who had already fronted the entire cost. Another thing
to add is that not only the 50 camps that hadn’t started for the campers
were cancelled, the 33 currently ongoing camps were shutdown as well. I
overall support MDA and I will continue to do so, it’s just at times they
do stuff in an unfair way. At my last year at camp in 2001 in Lake Tahoe there
was an incident unrelated to the camp or the campers where some drunken fools
stole jet skis somewhere else on the lake. They were being pursued by
police on the water and found out the hard way why not to do something like
that. They ended up beheading themselves on the camp dock because they
were too drunk to see the obstacle. Before MDA corporate got the story
straight, they called every parent saying a MURDER of two 20 something’s occurred
at the camp. I had to talk my parents out of pulling me from camp on a cell
phone by giving them the correct information. No staff or campers were
involved, nor did they witness anything. The beach was closed as a crime
scene and camp went on without a hitch. It’s just knee jerk
reactions like these that leave us scratching our heads.
