I agree the Swine Flu thing reaction has been over the top as compared to
the usual flu, but the fact is there is no preventive treatment for the swine flu yet.
Despite screening measures 11 confirmed cases and another 6 suspected cases
out of 1800 campers came to light. Those numbers are extremely higher in proportion to
any flu numbers you want to look at. Noone expected it.I definately do not think its a bottom line thing, its about the
health and welfare of those involved. The decision came from the CDC not MDA.
There could have been parent waivers or any other disclaimers and camp would have still closed.
The timing is unfortunate and the frustration is evident, so instead of pointing fingers
take the week to make it as special as you can for the kids. For the 17 year olds, maybe MDA
can make a one time exception next year. If not, I'll be happy that my son missed this camp and
celebrate his 18th birthday next year in lieu of grieving and saying well at least he got to go to camp
this year.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Schools were not closed, malls were not closed, parks were not closed, this should have been left up to the parents, the decision was likely made only to protect from potential lawsuit not to protect the kids. Each camp should have been handled on a case by case basis. This is just another example of an organization, government or otherwise protecting people from themselves and taking it out of our hands for the “greater good”.

If I really thought it was ONLY about the kids, I would be fine with it. I think it was more about their bottom line and their fear of being sued should a kid contract swine flu. You take no more of a risk getting swine flu at camp than you do at school or church, etc. If a parent is that worried about swine flu, they could have simply opted not to send their child. For the rest of the kids, have the parents sign a waiver not holding Mda responsible should a kid contract it.
