Akorn receives FDA approval for tetanus diphtheria vaccine
27th November 2007By Staff WriterThe FDA has approved Akorn's supplemental biologics license application for a unit dose preservative-
free tetanus diphtheria vaccine . Akorn expects to launch this new vaccine in the first quarter of 2008.The approval will allow Akorn to effectively compete in a market estimated to be worth $225 million in the US.
In March 2007, Akorn announced that it had entered into an exclusive distribution agreement with Massachusetts Biologic Laboratories for a tetanus diphtheria vaccine. Since September 2007, Akorn has been marketing a multi-dose preserved version of the vaccine.

Found some notes from a class handout (about 10 year ago) by Dr. Gregory Poland MD, Mayo Clinic and a past member of the ACIP (CDC vaccine policy makers).
"More recently, the ACIP has stated that an acceptable alternative is to give one mid-life booster dose of Td (age 50), if a full primary series of Td has already been received (3 doses given after 1 year of age or 4 doses if first dose was before one year of age). The usual protocol for booster doses in the case of injury remains in effect."

Subject: [MCC-FHC] Tetanus Booster
Hi, I just joined.
Unfortunately, I found out about vaccines AFTER my son has had his immunizations.
NOW, however, the middle school nurse called me to tell me that he needs his Tetanus booster and it's the law, and I can get the info to her that he's gotten his booster in the next few days.
But THEN, when she said his last immunization for Tetanus was 1/1999, and he is supposed to have his booster after 10 years, she admitted he wouldn't be due until January 2009!
I wondered WHY she's pressuring me NOW? Of course, I'm glad I've got time to deal with it, rather than waiting until he actually IS due.
