Subject: [fomm_stl] Legislative Alert!!
MMA met Tuesday, January 11th in Jefferson City. Thank you to everyone
who took the time to come to the capitol and show your support for our
legislative efforts! A few very exciting ideas were planned, which I
will elaborate on in the near future. But RIGHT NOW there is something
that we can all to do that can dramatically increase our chances of
success in DECRIMINALIZING midwifery in Missouri!
Representative Cynthia Davis has introduced a bill that would
decriminalize midwifery in missouri AND strengthen a woman's right to
choose the location and caregiver for her birth. (See attachment for a
copy of the bill.) The bill will probably be assigned to the Children &
Families Committee. None of the committee members have been chosen yet,
but Rep. Davis served on that committee last year, and will probably be
on it again this year. Additionally, and most significantly, the
Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson have not been chosen yet. The Speaker
of the House, Rod Jetton, will choose Reps to fill these positions in the
next few days.
So, please, RIGHT NOW, call, fax, e-mail and/or write to the Speaker of
the House and ask that Rep. Cynthia Davis be made the Chairperson or Vice
Chairperson of the Children and Families Committee!

Please use your own words to say something like, "Please name
Representative Cynthia Davis (from St. Louis) Chairperson or
Vice-Chairperson of the Children and Families Committee. She is
experienced and knowledgable on women's and family issues in Missouri.
Thank you."
The chairperson of a committee really has a lot of power over the bills
assigned to that committee. The chairperson controlls if a bill is
discussed and when, for how long, and in what context. Ultimately, it's
the committee chair that can "kill" the bill in committee or help it get
to the floor. If we can help to get Rep Davis named as a leader for this
committee, the bill will be much farther ahead than it will be if she's
just a committee member.
We have other ideas for helping this bill, but they are not nearly as
pressing as this one. Please take action now, and I will tell you about
the other ideas in the very near future!
