The term beat generation was introduced by Jack Kerouac in approximately 1948 to
describe his social circle to the novelist John Clellon Holmes (who published an
early novel about the beat generation, titled Go, in 1952, along with a
manifesto of sorts in the New York Times Magazine: "This is the beat
generation"). The adjective "beat" (introduced by Herbert Huncke) had the
connotations of "tired" or "down and out", but Kerouac added the paradoxical
connotations of "upbeat", "beatific", and the musical association of being "on
the beat".<BR><BR>Calling this relatively small group of struggling writers,
students, hustlers, and drug addicts a "generation" was to make the claim that
they were representative and important—the beginnings of a new trend,
analogous to the influential Lost Generation.

The members of the beat generation were new bohemian libertines, who engaged in
a spontaneous, sometimes messy, creativity. The beat writers produced a body of
written work controversial both for its advocacy of non-conformity and for its
non-conforming style. Though Kerouac dubbed the term "Beat generation" in 1948,
followers of "Beat literature" did not emerge until the late 1950s and early
1960s. Kerouac's On The Road, which heralded the beginning of "Beat" popularity,
was not published until 1957. By the time the "Beat generation" generated a
following in the mainstream society, most of the Beat writers had descended into
drug addiction and obscurity.

Echoes of the Beat Generation run throughout all the forms of
alternative/counter culture that have existed since then (e.g. "hippies",
"punks", etc). The Beat Generation can be seen as the first modern "subculture".

The major beat writings are Jack Kerouac's On the Road, Allen Ginsberg's Howl,
and William Burroughs' Naked Lunch. Both Howl and Naked Lunch became the focus
of obscenity trials in the United States that helped to liberalize what could be
legally published.

I have found after 8 years of lexapro neurontin and vicodin being stripped from
me now nothing helps unless it is more of those meds my body feels permanantly
damaged no strains of cannabis work well at all anymore just making my fatigue

yet these local assholes continue to deny me my meds. Personally I would rather
be dead than live with my body in this much pain my depression is 20 times worse

Worlds Largest Memorial Day Parade, Chicago, IL - 23 May 09

The City of Chicago has invited the PGR to participate in the largest Memorial Day Parade in the Country.

Saturday, May 23rd We will ride down State Street in memory of our Heroes and to honor our Gold Star families.

If you could only hear it... in the halls of Congress these days, people are talking about how alternatives to prison for drug offenses could help the budget crisis.

They're also talking about how recent major reforms in New York drug policy provide a model for action.

They're talking, quite simply, about the first steps in dismantling the drug war.

But talk isn't enough -- we have a major opportunity right now for action.

Next week the Senate will hold hearings on unfair sentencing differences for crack and powder cocaine. Your senators could dramatically reduce the number of nonviolent Americans locked up on drug charges -- if they hear from you. Take action to make sure Congress reforms unfair sentencing practices.

We've done it before.

A few weeks ago, DPA Network members like you successfully rolled back the worst parts of New York's Rockefeller Drug Laws, harsh mandatory minimum sentences for low-level drug law offenses. It took years of work, but together, we've shifted not just policy, but thinking about drug laws. Legislators in New York have called for a new direction in drug policy.

You and I can steer the country in that new direction, too. The New York legislature listened to the people, and now it's time to make Congress do the same.

I must say that we've come a long way since the old west yet are still so
ignorant we carry on needless wars like the futile violent never ending

declaring, in deep sincerity our collective call for peace.

Chalk4Peace is about our empowerment. We The People, our global
culture, all people everywhere and our common desire to live in peace.

The Chalk4Peace project has already transformed the experience of
thousands of people attending demonstrations for peace all over the
world during the past 7 years. Chalk4Peace is both a tool and a
conduit for non violent public self expression, and participation in
the growing global movement for peace.

Chalk4Peace is an opportunity for all of us of all ages to make our
feelings known, especially the young, whose future is in dire jeopardy
as our global village falls faster and faster into the fear breeding

Our global culture is teetering on the edge of extinction.

I get many e-mails and updates from our friends in the Illinois Patriot Guard
Riders and rather than posting each update on our boards which I would love to
always do periodically through the spirit of patriotism and respect to our
friends I will simply put up thier/our mission statement therefore one can
choose to stand for those who stood with us. I for one have disabilities and no
ride with many other responsibilities thus I cannot make the missions themselves
but make no mistake about it friends our Illinois guys n gals are some of the
best and I do stand with them I stand for them regardless of whether they agree
with my viewpoints or not just as they do me. It doesn't get any better than
these fine folks. Thanks Illinois Patriot Guard Riders for all you do!

Our successful lobbying, media and legal campaigns have resulted in important court precedents, new sentencing standards, and more compassionate community guidelines. Together we have rolled back public ambivalence and media bias to make medical cannabis a national issue.
