I walked to the movie theater today. It took 7 minutes. I zip along like I
used to do in high school. Good god, what will it be like when I reach my
goal weight?

100 POUNDS

My scale didn't read in tenths, when I weighed in at 311 back in November
2003. I figure today's 211.6 is close enough to declare the century mark
achieved.

Truth be told, I weighed 328 on a friend's bathroom scale back in 2001.
That weight was with my clothes on, and his bathroom scale reads about 2 or
3 pounds high, so I figure I was about 320.

I miss the occasional meetings of the LowCarbBuddies group that used to meet
in Saratoga. I skipped the last meeting in April, because I am busy on
Tuesdays.

I found that the Yahoo group for LowCarbBuddies has been deleted.

We were fortunate that Joel was willing to pay the $10 for the meeting room
at the Saratoga library, and make an agenda for us. It helped that he had a
business to promote at the time.

My local Castus low carb store had a group that meets, but they wanted $30
to attend. That was an absurd price to me. There is a meetup.com group in
San Francisco, but that is a long drive from San Jose. Also, they meet in
a restaurant. I dine out too often as it is.

If anyone knows of a low carb group in the South Bay, please let me know.

If I scheduled a meeting at the Saratoga library myself, and charged 75
cents per person to cover the room rental, would anyone be likely to attend?
I would not have the professional presentations that Joel had, but we could
share our stories and compare low carb ideas.... ?

I apologize for starting the trouble. At least we are talking again.

I'm still losing on low carb, but the rate has gone down. I guess I don't
burn as many calories per day as when I was 311 pounds. All the low carb
groups seem to be less active lately. I'm guessing it is a seasonal thing.
There should be another diet boom in January.

I think low carbers need an in-person support group like the weight watchers
people do. You would think the Atkins people would do something. They
could use the meetings like Tupperware parties.

Well, Barry Goldwater would turn over in his grave. Why would a conservative
ever want to vote for Bush? What is conservative about him? To quote Doug
Bandow, a Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute and a former Special Assistant
to President Reagan, "He is increasing the size and power of the U.S.
government both at home and abroad. He has expanded social engineering from
the American nation to the entire globe. He is lavish with dollars on both
domestic and foreign programs." That's a CONSERVATIVE?

Nels Stemm, in a widely quoted blog entry entitled "Is Bush a
Conservative?", wrote, "George W. Bush claims the mantle of conservative.
What is he conserving? Not my tax dollars. Not my liberty. Not the moral
standards of my society. The only thing he seems to be conserving - rapidly
expanding more like it - is the arbitrary power that the federal government
holds over our lives."

How about the words of Clyde Prestowitz, a former Goldwater supporter and
Reagan administration official: "Historically, conservatism in the United
States has meant support for small government, balanced budgets, fiscal
prudence and great skepticism about overseas adventures. What I see now is
an administration that's not for any of these things."

Travel back with me in time, to the halcyon days of Newt Gingrich and "the
Contract with America" that included "The Fiscal Responsibility Act: A
balanced budget/tax limitation amendment and a legislative line-item veto to
restore fiscal responsibility to an out-of-control Congress."

Now come back to the present and ask yourself just how we "turned a
projected surplus of $5.6 trillion into a projected deficit of $4
trillion--in two years. As the London Financial Times observed after Bush's
second round of tax cuts was passed, this was not conservatism but madness.
'On the management of fiscal policy, the lunatics are now in charge of the
asylum,' the paper commented. 'Reason cuts no ice; economic theory is
dismissed; and contrary evidence is ignored. But watching the world's
economic superpower slowly destroy perhaps the world's most enviable fiscal
position is something to behold.' " (The Nation, May 13, 2004)

Or maybe this from Kevin Phillips: 'The Bush Administration is not against
big government. They're against the portion of it that regulates business
and requires tax increases, against a welfare system. When it's the latter,
they're against big government, but when it's big government that takes care
of the oil industry or bails out financial institutions or pumps money into
the Pentagon, then they tend to be in favor of that."

If you want to say you're a Republican and thus are voting for Bush, fine.
If you want to say you are invested in nation building, or will do anything
to preserve tax cuts for the wealthiest people in our society, or just like
the way W grins at a barbeque, fine too.

But don't say "I'm a conservative so I'm voting for Bush," because there is
nothing conservative about the government of George W. Bush.

Christie

Well, Barry Goldwater would turn over in his grave. Why would a conservative

I know many people who have tried low carb and found
it hasn't worked for them, or it's too hard, or what
ever. The trick is to experiment with different low
carb foods, different levels of fat, different protein
sources, different supplements, different calorie
levels and different veggies until you find what works
for you.

Definitely since you are A+ and part Asian you will do
better with lower fat protein sources, like fish,
chicken and eggs. Stick to these as staples, with
minimal red meat. You want to eat lots of veggies, do
not limit these at all.

I'd recommend any of the following: Artichoke,
Arugula, Asparagus, Bamboo Shoot, Beet, Bok Choy,
Broccoli, Brussel Sprout, Cauliflower, Cilantro,
Collard Greens, Endive, Escarole, Fennel, Garlic,
Ginger, Kale, Leek, Mushrooms, Olive (Green), Onion
(Green), Onion (Red/Spanish/Yellow), Pumpkin, Radish,
Scallion, Seaweed, Shallots, Spinach, Squash
(Summer/Winter), Water Chestnut, Watercress, or
Zucchini.

Don't try and do really high fat low carb. I'd say
your ration should be about 40/40/20
(fat/protein/carb) with the majority of your carbs
coming from veggies and your fat coming from good oils
like olive.

I have read lots of books on this subject, and find it
best to use a combination of techniques rather than a
one size fits all approach. Each person is different
in unique, and I firmly believe in experimenting to
see what works best for you. It appears you have
found what works best for you.

Some believe they do, some don't. There is a whole theory, which you can
read about in the book "Eat Right for your Type" by Peter d'Adamo.

This theory has many passionate adherents and you may find it helpful to
you. I myself found it didn't hold true for me at all - I have AB+ blood and
many of the foods that I cannot tolerate are supposed to be good for me, and
many foods I do great on are supposed to be bad for me. I do best on a diet
that would be for type O.... Type O is the most common blood type, and that
is the type that is supposed to find plans like Atkins easiest. However, I
suspect that this is true of most people, regardless of their blood type.

I think the primary reason many people have good luck with this plan is that
it eliminates for ALL blood types most of the foods that are really bad for
us, ie, the highly refined ones.

Thanks for your compliments Mary. My husband Matt is
from the Santa Rosa area, so that is where we had our
wedding. It was at a restaurant called La Strada.

La Strada
Address: 3660 Stony Point Rd, Santa Rosa, CA 95407
Phone: (707) 585-1111

They have a large backyard with a gazebo which we got
married under. It was relatively inexpensive and the
food was great, everyone raved. It was very
convenient to have the wedding and reception in one
place.

However, if you and your guests are far from that
location, it might make it hard for logistics. If you
are close to that location then great. Email me
privately and I can tell you more.

I also know a great make-up artist, photographer, DJ,
officiant and hair stylist in the area.

I'm having fun feeling the baby kick me all the time.

Congratulation Debby -- you were a beautiful bride. Can I ask where you got
married and had your reception? Michael & I are planning an October wedding and
are still looking to book a place for both the wedding and reception.

And congrats on the baby. What an exciting time for you.

What is your blood type if I may ask? Because of your
mixed heritage it's harder for me to say. Most likely
you will do better with lower fat proteins like fish
and chicken if I had to guess. I wouldn't do too high
fat if I were you. Also lots of green veggies.

I have and I wouldn't recommend them. The weight loss
is very slow on these as the carb levels tend to be
higher.

I am half Chinese, half Caucasian (majority Swedish). The health
problem that I have is that my liver is slightly weakened due to
medication so it is not advisable for me to have a high fat diet, but
I can have a moderate amount of protien, but not tons and tons of
protien because it can increase the inflammation of my liver. However
it is also advisable for my liver health that I try to lose the little
bit of extra weight. So there is my quandry. I need help finding a
plan that fits into that tiny profile. I have tried just reducing my
calories and increasing my activity, but that has not really worked,
and it makes me really hungry besides, and I have a tendency to get
bingy if hungry. I will try the library for the Dr. Atkins Book
