Can anyone recommend a website with a very complete glycemic index
list (contains lots of different foods)? I'm also looking for a
carbohydrate list showing grams per Ounce (instead of grams per
serving, or per cup, or whatever). Any help is appreciated.

It appears there is a new alternative to WLS.

article: http://tinyurl.com/935nt

Previous stomach balloons had been filled with saline. The new approach
uses an air filled balloon, which floats near the top of the stomach.
Apparently, that is the right area to stimulate to create a sense of
fullness....

Ketogenic diet prevents seizures by enhancing brain energy production,
increasing neuron stability
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Although the high-fat, calorie-restricted ketogenic diet
(KD) has long been used to prevent childhood epileptic seizures that are
unresponsive to drugs, physicians have not really understood exactly why the
diet works. New studies by a research team at Emory University School of
Medicine show that the diet alters genes involved in energy metabolism in the
brain, which in turn helps stabilize the function of neurons exposed to the
challenges of epileptic seizures. This knowledge could help scientists identify
specific molecular or genetic targets and lead to more effective drug treatments
for epilepsy and brain damage.
The research will be presented at the annual meeting of the Society for
Neuroscience in Washington, D.C. by Kristopher Bough, PhD, a postdoctoral
student in the laboratory of Emory pharmacology professor Raymond Dingledine,
PhD.

"These findings support our hypothesis that a dietary regimen can dramatically
affect the expression of genes and the function of neurons within the brain,
which enhances the ability of these neurons to withstand the metabolic
challenges of epileptic seizures," Dr. Dingledine said.

The ketogenic diet causes molecules called ketone bodies to be produced as fat
is broken down. Scientists have understood that these molecules somehow cause a
change in metabolism leading to a potent anticonvulsant effect. According to
some animal studies they also may limit the progression of epilepsy.

The Emory research team studied the link between diet and epileptic seizures on
the behavioral, cellular and genetic level. They found, as had others, that in
rats fed the KD the resistance to seizures develops slowly, over one to two
weeks, in contrast to rats treated with conventional anticonvulsant drugs. On
the cellular level, they found that the anticonvulsant effect of the ketogenic
diet did not correlate with a rise in plasma ketone levels or with a decrease in
plasma glucose. Because longer treatment with the KD was necessary to increase
the resistance to seizures, they concluded that changes in gene expression might
hold the key to the diet's anticonvulsant effects.

To identify which genes might be involved, the researchers used microarray "gene
chips" to examine changes in gene expression for more than 7,000 rat genes
simultaneously. They focused on the hippocampus, a region of the brain known to
play an important role in many kinds of epilepsies. More than 500 of the genes
they examined were correlated with treatment with the KD. The most striking
finding was the coordinated up-regulation of genes involved in energy
metabolism.

To explain this genetic effect, the scientists first eliminated the possibility
that the KD diet might cause enhanced production of GABA, a chemical messenger
in the brain that helps limit seizure activity. They found that GABA levels in
the hippocampus were unchanged with the KD.

To test whether energy reserves in hippocampal neurons were enhanced with the
KD, they counted the number of energy "factories," or mitochondria, within cells
using electron microscopy. They found that KD treatment significantly increased
the number of mitochondria per unit area in the hippocampus. This finding, along
with the concerted increase in the expression of genes encoding energy metabolic
enzymes, led them to conclude that KD treatment enhances energy production in
the hippocampus and may lead to improved neuronal stability.

Finally, the researchers tested whether brain tissue affected by the KD would be
more resistant to low levels of glucose (an effect of seizures) because of their
enhanced energy reserves. They found that synaptic communication in KD-fed rats
was more resistant to low glucose levels than in control animals fed a regular
diet.

The researchers believe their new knowledge could lead to the development of
more effective drug treatments for epilepsy and brain damage.

And because the diet enhances the brain's ability to withstand metabolic
challenges, they also believe the ketogenic diet should be studied as a possible
treatment for other neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's or
Parkinson's diseases.

My thoughts exactly Dave, about Atkins and calories.
I have done Atkins
before and lost 50lbs. I stalled a few times during
that time but as soon
as I kicked up the non-starchy vegetables and took
away MOST of the cheese
and "frankenfoods" I started to lose again. I,
unfortunately am not one to
try one thing, as soon as I started to gain I PANICKED
and tried all 3
things. Maybe taking away just the cheese or
frankenfoods, one at a time,
might have done it...ANYWAY, I am back to losing
again. ALSO, I found that
once I got the thought out of my head that Atkins (no
fault of his) was an
"all you can eat" diet I not only felt better but the
weight loss started to
kick in faster. I try to eat 6 little meals a day
instead of cramming it
all into 3 meals a day, that is working for me.
OK, I must go for now but I will keep an eye on
everyone's success. It is
so encouraging...even if we are miles away. One day I
hope to get back to
the bay area, but until then I will just keep coming
here to get my "bay
area fix" :-)!
Ciao for now, Mary >^.,.^<

Thanks Mary,

I do a variation on Atkins that is like induction levels with a high fat
percentage, 65%. I also count calories with Fitday. Atkins doesn't seem to
be into calorie counting.

As of 6AM Pacific I weighed in at 164.8, which makes my original goal of 165
official. (Yesterday, I still had half a pound to go.) I'm: 5' 8"

During the 1980's I had reached 165 with a starvation diet. I had remembered
thinking that was a good weight at the time, so I set my goal at 165. Now that
I am recovering from having been as high as 320, my body does not hold its fat
evenly distributed. Thus, it is obvious I need to continue on. My new goal is
150.

All these are in Sonoma County, which is where I live.

I really like the Tides Wharf Restaurant at Inn at the Tides out in Bodega
Bay. It has many items on the menu that are adaptable for LC, and is one of
the few places I actually get excited about eating.
http://www.innatthetides.com/dining.asp#1

In Petaluma, JM Rosen's Waterfront Grill has a TON of options on the menu,
one of the few places I go where I actually have several choices to select
from. If you have a sweet tooth, though, beware... you enter right smack
into their dessert display, and it can be a little challenging. They have no
LC dessert options. http://www.jmrosens.com/

Across the parking lot from JM Rosen's in Petaluma is Dempsey's, which has a
nice roasted chicken and will sub extra veggies instead of potatos. There
are usually one or two items in addition to the chicken and salads that you
can eat LC. Although like JM Rosen's it's on the river, it doesn't have as
nice a setting, and only if you are seated outdoors can you see the water.
http://www.dempseys.com/

Il Fornaio in Corte Madera is good, lots of salads and grilled chicken.
http://www.ilfornaio.com/Restaurants/RestaurantDetail.asp?ID=9

Across the street from Il Forniao in Corte Madera is Max's Opera Cafe. Now,
they have tons and tons of LC items... they have a complete LC menu and even
have several LC desserts, all or most of which are sweetened with splenda. I
was told the chocolate dessert was sweetened with Splenda, but considering
the violent diarrhea and stomach cramps it gave me, I believe that it
contains sugar alcohols. So I now stick to the espresso cheesecake. They
have LC bread for sandwiches, an LC chicken liver, olive, and hardboiled egg
appetizer, and about six LC entrees. Portions are huge. Drawbacks are that
the service can be truly, staggeringly slow, so I would never go there if I
was in a rush.
http://www.maxsworld.com/locations_browse.php?action=view_record&idnum=22

I also like a local restaurant FOR LUNCH ONLY, called Cape Fear Cafe, in the
town of Duncans Mills (near Jenner). Dinner is expensive and impossible for
LC. Don't even try. The tuna salad on the lunch menu is fabulous, and even
without the bun and fries, the burger is very filling. But best of all is
the brunch menu. I get a sort of Benedict they make with sauteed veggies,
hold the potatos, hold the grits (which they use instead of English muffin),
and served with a side of sausage. Yum! (no website)

Hope this helps!

Christie

Would anyone like to suggest restaurants in the Bay Area that have
good low carb choices?

I recently found that Denny's has low carb breakfast options. So far,
I find Black Angus, and Outback Steakhouse are adaptable too. Mimi's
lists low carb items, but they just don't get it. They think a low
carb omelet should have no yolks....

I had been looking for a local diet group that accepts low carb for a long time.
I recently stumbled across a group called TOPS. This is a very old group, and
they don't seem to care how you diet as long as it is "sensible." To me,
"sensible" can mean almost anything. They have groups that meet throughout the
Bay Area.

  http://www.tops.org/

I had previously heard about another group called Overeater's Anonymous, but I
hated the group name. I do not think of myself as an overeater. Why join a
group that insults itself in its name?

I have been told that Weight Watchers is shifting toward low carb in their
"core" program. I have heard conflicting opinions about it.

In any case, TOPS membership is cheap. I like the idea of having an official
weigh-in, and the opportunity to chat with some other dieters.

Dear Friends,

May I request you to go through the latest news "A team of doctors in
Argentina has pioneered a new technique for treating diabetes using
adult stem cells that could represent a breakthrough in confronting
this chronic disease" which can be viewed through link
http://www.ipsnews.net/africa/interna.asp?idnews=26996.

I think; we can't ignore these facts that :-

1. The experiment was on a TYPE-2 patient on 3rd January 2005.

2. Result shows that the pancreas began to produce insulin again, NOT
IN THE NORMAL AMOUNT, BUT AT THE LEVELS OF A TYPE-2 DIABETES PATIENT.

3. As per Dr. Jorge Saslavsky, the head of the Medical Team, they
doesn't know how long the benefits of the treatment will last.

4. THEY ALSO DOSEN'T KNOW THAT IF THE PROCEDURE WILL VE EFFECTIVE IN
TYPE-1 INSULIN DEPENDENT DIABETICS.

5. They have yet to publish their results in Scientific Journels as it
require a large number of test cases and more time to observe the effects.

6. THEY HAVE NOT CONSIDERED PATENTING THE PROCEDURE as the technique
is not novel enough to patent.

7. The next phase of research, being funded by a private foundation at
a cost of US$1,600 per treatment, will commence February 1.

8. In phase two, 35 patients between the ages of 22 and 65 will be
selected from among 500 volunteers who have already stepped up and
offered to undergo the treatment.

May I request you for your comments please.

ARGENTINA:
Breakthrough in Treating Diabetes with Adult Stem Cells

Marcela Valente

BUENOS AIRES, Jan 11 (IPS) - A team of doctors in Argentina has
pioneered a new technique for treating diabetes using adult stem cells
that could represent a breakthrough in confronting this chronic disease.

Dr. Jorge Saslavsky, the head of the medical team, told IPS that the
experiment involved the injection of adult stem cells into a diabetic
patient, using stem cells harvested from the patient himself.

It was the first time that the procedure had been used to treat
diabetes, and the doctors confirmed that the patient's pancreas, which
had ceased to produce insulin, began to function again as a result of
the treatment.

The medical team participating in this groundbreaking experiment was
made up of cardiologists, haematologists, radiologists and other
specialists from the Sán Nicolás Clinic in the eastern Argentine
province of Buenos Aires and the Bone Marrow Transplant Centre in
Rosario, in the neighbouring province of Santa Fe.

The team has been using the same procedure for some time now to treat
victims of heart attacks, injecting stem cells into the damaged heart
tissue to promote recovery. Earlier this month, they used the
technique for the first time on a diabetic patient.

Diabetes is a chronic illness with two forms, known as Type 1 and Type
2. In Type 1 diabetes, the patient's pancreas produces very little or
no insulin, and they are dependent on artificial insulin, usually in
the form of daily injections, to maintain the proper level of blood
glucose (also known as blood sugar).

In Type 2 diabetes, the pancreas continue to produce insulin, but the
body's tissues are unable to use it properly. In response, the
pancreas produce more insulin as a means of compensating. While
medication can often be used to treat this insulin resistance, there
are cases where the deterioration of the pancreas can lead to Type 1
diabetes and insulin dependence.

The patient chosen for the first clinical trial was a 42-year-old
Argentine man suffering from Type 2 diabetes who had stopped producing
insulin, said Saslavsky.

The doctors began by extracting bone marrow in a procedure that
required 10 minutes of general anaesthesia. The stem cells were
harvested from the marrow and injected through a catheter into the
pancreas, with no need for surgery.

The entire procedure was carried out in a single day. The bone marrow
was extracted in the morning, and the stem cells were injected during
a two-hour process later in the day. "That evening, the patient walked
out of the hospital," Saslavsky said.

In preliminary control studies, the doctors observed that the pancreas
began to produce insulin again, not in the normal amount, but at the
levels of a Type 2 diabetes patient.

"In this case, we did not expect the patient to be cured, but rather
to improve to the point of a diabetic who can be successfully treated
with medication," Saslavsky explained.

The results of this pioneering experiment have opened up a whole new
world of possibilities for the treatment of the disease.

The research team does not know how long the benefits of the injection
will last, or if the procedure will be effective in Type I or
insulin-dependent diabetics. "We still haven't tried it," noted Saslavsky.

However, he stressed, the procedure is an extremely simple one that
requires nothing more than the patient's consent, and has no
potentially negative side effects. "The worst that can happen is that
it doesn't have any beneficial effect, but it is completely harmless,"
he said.

As of now, the doctors have yet to publish their results in scientific
journals, and have not considered patenting the procedure. Publication
would require a larger number of test cases and more time to observe
the effects, and the technique is not novel enough to patent.

"We combined various techniques that have been used in the past for
other purposes," Saslavsky said. At the San Nicolás Clinic alone, stem
cells have been injected into the hearts of close to 100 patients who
have suffered heart attacks.

Stem cells can transform themselves into any kind of cell in the human
body, including neurons or brain cells, which is why this field of
medical research offers such enormous potential.

There are two types of stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are harvested
from embryos created through in vitro fertilisation, while adult stem
cells are readily available in sources like the pancreas and brain,
although they are most easily harvested from bone marrow.

Stem cells do not age, and can be used to regenerate tissue and organs
even in elderly patients. "When patients are old, they have fewer stem
cells, but the quality of the cells does not change," said Saslavsky.

Embryonic stem cell research has generated enormous expectations in
the medical community, he noted, but because the process used to
harvest the cells kills the embryo, it has become an extremely
controversial issue, which makes the advances achieved with adult stem
cells even more significant.

Nevertheless, there has been a far greater emphasis worldwide on
embryonic stem cell research as opposed to adult stem cell research,
and Saslavsky believes the reason could be economic. Because the
procedures involved in embryonic stem cell research are far more
complicated, they can attract greater funding for laboratories, while
resulting treatments would be more costly as well.

By contrast, the procedure for using adult stem cells from the same
patient is much simpler and thus far less expensive, as it is limited
to the cost of the catheters used to extract the bone marrow and
inject the stem cells and the reagents needed to harvest them.

Moreover, even if there were an easier, less costly way of cultivating
embryonic stem cells, there would still be the risk of rejection,
since they would have a different genetic composition than that of the
recipient.

In the past, there have been cases of diabetics receiving treatment in
the form of grafts of pancreatic tissue from recently deceased donors,
but the technique is risky precisely because of the potential for
rejection, Saslavsky noted.

"What is completely novel about this technique is that the stem cells
come from the patients themselves, which means there is no danger of
rejection and resulting damage to the pancreas," he said.

The progress observed in the subject of this groundbreaking
experiment, who remains anonymous, could provide a key to combating
diabetes, which is a leading cause of death in many countries. (END/2005)

Stem cell treatment reverses diabetes: researchers

BUENOS AIRES : Millions of diabetics worldwide could put insulin
injections behind them if a stem cell treatment that Argentine
physicians have successfully used to reverse the disease confirms
promising early results.

The treatment, in which stem cells are injected into the pancreas,
does not involve risks of rejection, requires no prolonged inpatient
treatment, and any physician trained in and skilled with
catheterization could perform it, cardiologist Roberto Fernandez Vina
told AFP.

Fernandez Vina leads the team that successfully carried out the first
implant of its kind January 3 on an insulin-dependent diabetic patient
at San Nicolas Hospital in the town of San Nicolas, north of Buenos
Aires.

The 42-year-old man, who had been insulin dependent since the age of
25, so far has seen his glucose levels return to normal with no need
for medication.

The treatment involves extracting stem cells from the ilium, a bone in
the hip, and after manipulating them in the laboratory, injecting them
into the pancreas using a special catheter introduced through the
femoral artery, which provides a direct route to the "tail" of the
pancreas.

"It is an unprecedented technique, because it uses stem cells and not
embryonic ones, as had been done previously, and because of the path
of injection, since we chose a direct artery and not a peripheral
vein," Fernandez Vina said.

Unlike embryonic cells, stem cells have the ability to act as
"copiers" of the information they find in the organ into which they
are deposited.

People with diabetes have a shortage in the pancreas of so-called beta
cells, which have the task of producing insulin, with which the body
regulates glucose levels in the blood.

Introducing "copy-making" cells in the pancreas generates beta cell
production, thereby increasing the production of insulin needed to
balance the patient's glucose level.

Fernandez Vina noted that advantages of stem cell therapy in the
pancreas are that it can be repeated in the same patient and that the
catheterisation technique does not require particularly extensive
training.

The method "opens up an enormous area of research" into other
diseases, such as Hepatitis C, Fernandez Vina added.

"In any case, we have to be prudent and act cautiously," the
specialist said, noting that "every patient is different" and the
pancreas may have varying responses to this treatment.

The next phase of research, being funded by a private foundation at a
cost of US$1,600 per treatment, will commence February 1.

In phase two, 35 patients between the ages of 22 and 65 will be
selected from among 500 volunteers who have already stepped up and
offered to undergo the treatment.

"We are going to include diabetics whose beta cells no longer produce
insulin (who are insulin-dependent), as well as those who need
medication to boost their production" of beta cells, the researcher
explained.

"We want it to be a treatment that delivers results fast," added
Fernandez Vina, at the helm of a group of researchers at the public
Universidad Nacional de Rosario.

He is also an immunologist with the MD Anderson Cancer Center in
Houston, Texas.

The team's research in this case actually began in Argentina in 2003
with testing of the use of stem cells in the heart to repair heart
attack-damaged tissue.

The US-based Cardiovascular Research Foundation has voiced interest in
the research protocol, the Argentine research team leader added. - AFP

Raviraj Prakashabhai Thakrar is a member of Juvenile Diabetic
Foundation, Rajkot; like other Rajkot based Insulin Dependent Diabetic
Children who take Insulin by Daily Injections. He is a member of more
than 224 Diabetic Groups consisting more than 20,000
Diabetic/Scientists/Researches/Heads of Diabetes Research Centers of
their Countries all over the world including U.K., U.S.A. & Egypt. He;
through internet; regularly receives latest research papers by which;
he knows very well that till date; Diabetes Type - 1 (Insulin
Dependant) is not curable; only controllable. These entire diabetic
have to compulsorily inject their daily dose of Insulin regularly. By
injecting insulin in their body daily; they are not going to be free
of
this disease; they can only regulate their blood Glucose Level for
maximum 24 hours only. There is no medicine, which can cure such type
of diabetic all over the world. No O.H.A. (Oral Hypoglycemic Agent),
no
medicine, which can be swallowed by mouth, is effective in this
disease. Vice President, American Diabetes Association certifies this
fact and an e-mail print out is exists with father of the diabetic
child. In conclusion, we can say that "Diabetes Type 1 is not
curable; only controllable"; till date.

We must praise the courage of the diabetic child for the fact that
before competiting all the Championships on various days of
Competitions; he took his regular dosage of Insulin by injection
himself & used his Pneumatic Air Rifle for constantly 1 hour 15
minutes
in single standing position as per the National Rules & won the Gold,
Silver & Bronze Medals in ".177 Open Sight Air Rifle Sub Junior Men
Individual".

The diabetic child, as advised by his doctor, records himself his
Urine Blood Sugar through Ketodiastic daily 3 to 5 times. He takes his
daily dosage of Insulin (24 Units a day) by Injection at 1:00 p.m. &
7:30 p.m. daily.

There is a humble appeal of father of the diabetic child, Shri
Prakashbhai Thakrar, to all of you to send any information related to
remedy of Type 1 diabetes by which he either can stop daily injections
or reduce the daily dosage of Insulin to his son.

Cheryl,

Eggs for dinner??
I'm going to be at work, so I'm "gathering" from a leftover
lunch meeting. So it's gonna be the inside of roast beef
sandwich, some mayo/mustard, cheese, tomato, over a
cooked spinach/feta/honey (minimal honey) salad,
with black olives and red bell pepper (some carbs)
picked out from the pasta salad, and I'll add some snack
almonds and peanuts. Lots of good oils -- olive oil,
nuts, black olives, high nutrients from spinach, and looks
and tastes good.

Hi Cheryl,

A 300 blood glucose reading is very high and bad for your health.
In some cases, you could be considered impaired for driving
behind the wheel of a car and it's not a Twinkie defense!
That's what a type I diabetic told me.

trying a few other things -- they didn't work and I'm back to where I belong

165 is great Peter.

I think my doctor has to follow the organization rules. (Kaiser) So, he
doesn't say much about what I'm eating, except to suggest lower fat. I eat
lots of fat, but I have not told him the extent of it.

I don't alternate between a glycolysis based metabolism and a ketosis based
metabolism. I find a transition out of ketosis make me feel bad, so I just
stay in ketosis.

Good luck finding a new doctor. It would be nice to have an Atkins/LC
friendly doctor, but these days HMO's and insurance make it hard to find the
right doctor who is also coved by the insurance.

Hi Dave,

Your HbA1c change is truly amazing! I'm curious what your doc
thinks about Atkins now! I went from an 8.3% to 5.4% HbA1c,
so Atkins is somewhat right when he says a low-carb diet can
often "cure" Type 2 diabetes. My first doc got out of general
practice, moved from Alta Bates to Santa Rosa. He was pretty
close minded. The second doc was impressed -- he changed to
become an ER doc (more money per hr spent). Dr. Two suggested a
more Mediterranean diet (low carb, olive oil, nuts, fish, less
saturated fat, more "good" fats) but really liked my numbers on Atkins.
Now I'm doctor less, but just b/c I haven't picked a replacement.

I'm doing a on-going weight loss/maintence level of carbs, with
exceptions for long bike rides, holiday meals, moments of weakness.
I think it's actually good to alternate between a glycolysis based metabolism
and a ketosis based metabolism once in a while. Atkins would probably
disagree with me here. I'm pretty stable at 165 lbs, 25-26 BMI, 172-163 lbs
range over 2004, though I'd like to get to 160.

There's a guy at UC-Berkeley who wants to test cognitive function in
people on Atkins! I've talked to him some about quantitating ketosis,
etc. If anyone on the list is interested, he's looking for people starting
low-carb and it's a paid study. Contact Aubrey Gilbert mayfly@...

The list still shows 71 members. I met some of you in Saratoga, some
months ago. I'm curious how everyone is doing.

I'm still low carbing and losing about a pound a week. My HbA1c
checks out as 5.1. It used to be 10 a few years ago. I'm still
hoping some big organization like Atkins will offer a support group
like weight-watchers does.

January is usually the season for people to get back to dieting, but
I have not seen much evidence of it yet.

I walked to the movie theater today. It took 7 minutes. I zip along like I
used to do in high school. Good god, what will it be like when I reach my
goal weight?

100 POUNDS

My scale didn't read in tenths, when I weighed in at 311 back in November
2003. I figure today's 211.6 is close enough to declare the century mark
achieved.

Truth be told, I weighed 328 on a friend's bathroom scale back in 2001.
That weight was with my clothes on, and his bathroom scale reads about 2 or
3 pounds high, so I figure I was about 320.

I miss the occasional meetings of the LowCarbBuddies group that used to meet
in Saratoga. I skipped the last meeting in April, because I am busy on
Tuesdays.

I found that the Yahoo group for LowCarbBuddies has been deleted.

We were fortunate that Joel was willing to pay the $10 for the meeting room
at the Saratoga library, and make an agenda for us. It helped that he had a
business to promote at the time.

My local Castus low carb store had a group that meets, but they wanted $30
to attend. That was an absurd price to me. There is a meetup.com group in
San Francisco, but that is a long drive from San Jose. Also, they meet in
a restaurant. I dine out too often as it is.

If anyone knows of a low carb group in the South Bay, please let me know.

If I scheduled a meeting at the Saratoga library myself, and charged 75
cents per person to cover the room rental, would anyone be likely to attend?
I would not have the professional presentations that Joel had, but we could
share our stories and compare low carb ideas.... ?
