Tammera -- welcome to the list. Why don't you go ahead and post the info about
your store. Maybe some of us will make it to the grand opening!!

Okay, Mary, here's my introduction.
I've been doing low carb since September 1999, and have lost 40 pounds. This is
my website: Low Carb Loser
I also run an MSN message board, and have met some great friends in this area
and we've all been very supportive of one another.
One of my friends (who has also been low carbing for 4 years) approached me and
asked if I'd be interested in opening a low carb store in San Francisco.
I said, "But of course!"
And so we are opening our doors on Saturday. It's been an adventure, that's for
sure. We're very excited! We're going to do seminars, too. I went to one of
the "franchise store" seminars. Ours won't cost a thing, or last hours and
hours until you're so tired and hungry that you can barely stand it. (Hmm, how
much did I *not* like that seminar?) We'll just give an overview of low carb
diets, why they work, tips and tricks we've learned along the way, etc. We're
thinking of having a fee up front, and then giving out store credit for that
amount after the seminar.
We're not doing this with dollar signs in our eyes. We're doing it because low
carb is our LIFE and we want to listen to and help others in their journeys.
I hope this doesn't come across as advertising, as I know that's not allowed.
I know if a low carb store was opening in my area, I would want to know about
it!
I hope to get to know all of you better. I hope that you will re-introduce
yourselves.

Hi Tammera,
I'm not familiar with MSN message boards. Do they use webpages, or is it
an email list thing like Yahoo groups? What is the name of the Bay Area
based LC MSN group?
Good luck with the store. A low carb store (Castus) opened near me in San
Jose about a month ago. I found the prices high and 2/3 of the products I
carefully picked proved to be nasty. They had a class they were passing out
flyers for. They wanted about $30 to attend, so I was not interested. Both
times I was in their store there were no other customers in sight. I
compared the price of their LC Isopure to the internet. They wanted about
$48. On the internet I found it for about $26 plus $6 shipping.

Hi Folks, found another great source for low-carb, organic products.
Some of you may be familiar with the brand Bob's Red Mill ? Sold in
most health food stores, as well as Trader Joe's, I've used their almond
flour as a flour replacement (although TJ's own house brand is now
cheaper, as is their hazelnut flour). They now have low-carb baking
products at their website. http://www.bobsredmill.com Products appear
significantly cheaper than Atkins' comparable products...

meateater -- welcome to the list. The original owner just turned the list over

don't know why!! But, now it's up to us to start building up our resources.

Dave - -yes this list has been quiet lately, but I think we just haven't found
our niche. I am a member of another high volume list and welcome a lower
volume, local list. I am hoping that we can inject some life back into this
group.
Unfortunately, all of our links, files and messages are gone. On the flip side,
that allows us, the members of this group, to make it what we want. I welcome
all ideas and suggestions to make this a great list for us all.

I buy the cheapest bacon possible, and then rinse it off for few minutes.
Hopefully, this removes the nitrates and sugar. I buy a box of end pieces
at 7 cents an ounce.

I recently purchased a nitrite free bacon at Andronico's in
Berkeley. My dh really likes to have 2 slices a day and I have been
looking for this, as the nitrites are unhealthy. Also, they have a
nice selection of organic meats, cheeses, chicken etc and have the
low carb milk that we like (chocolate). I didn't try this, as it was
a little pricey, but they had this organic cream in the glass
bottles. I did buy one that was hormone free, so that was nice.
We are back on induction, because both my dh and I are gaining weight
(although I'm still losing inches). I think until I get a food scale
and have a better sense of carb counts, we have to stick to the
basics. Dh still has another 30 lbs to lose, so I think that is what
we'll have to do. Bummer, because I was looking forward to more
veggies, but I think it's best.
LaJuana - good for you ! I'm finding that persistence is really the key here. I had a pretty good week last week but my real challenge was the weekend. We went to Las Vegas on Friday night and just got back at 3 am this morning (yes, I just strolled in to work...yeesh). Big challenge was eating properly with all those "free" drinks around...meals were generally ok because I could get a rib eye steak or an egg dish for very very cheap. I did succumb to a couple of strawberry daiquiris with way too much sugar AND whipping cream (which I know came from a can with lots of sugar too !) Was very wary of the scale this morning but was down 1 lb from last Friday when we left - hoping its NOT just water since I'm drinking it like a fish (do fish drink water ??)
Here's to a new week !

I like the downloaded version of FitDay too. I have learned a lot from the charts and such. I never had the motivation to log my food on paper, but the computer makes it fun.
While the program does not crash or have obvious bugs, it does lack a few things as might be expected for a first version of software. I can't find a way to log sugar alcohol on custom foods. Also, I would like to have charting on water and other beverage consumption showing total fluids per day.
I was shocked one day, when a pie chart showed that my tiny 2 ounces of cashews had the most calories per food item for the day. Variety is important, but for the same calories I could have had a bunch more of something else.
The nutritional breakdown shows I'm short on folic acid. However, it also shows that folates were fine. I read on the internet that folic acid and folates are the same thing. Now I'm confused.

I am really enjoying the downloaded version of fitday. I like it because it is on my desktop and I do not have to go online to add my foods for the day. I can just type them in without signing online.

Does anyone have any opinion on the $20 FitDay Software VS. the FREE one!??!?!?! Is it worth $20? I couldn't tell the difference from what the site says????
Kris
We downloaded the Fitday software and have made a commitment to log in every day.
LaJuana - I have thought about getting the PC version, but I like the fact that I can access fitday from anywhere. I have heard really good things about the PC version though.

Your Atkins Buddy and friend, LaJauna Originally I started at 294 and got to 233.5 in a year (7-14-02 thru 7-03). Recommitment started 2-3-04 261/252/145 (-9)
1 pound of muscle = 1 pound of fat
However muscle is more dense so it takes up less
space. That's why you are losing inches and not
pounds if you are replacing fat with muscle. This is
a good thing. Muscle also burns more calories than
fat so that helps as well.
Keep it up!

Janki -- I don't know exactly, but I have heard that muscle weighs about 2.5 times as much as fat, volume for volume. If you are losing inches, that is what counts!! Doesn't it feel great when the clothes get loose. I am now wearing size 10 again and it feels great!!

I don't eat much salt but now I really like drinking water. Today, had a

On a much unrelated note: does anyone have an idea how much weight muscle weights in relation to fat? I've been on induction for a month and finally switched to phase II at the start of the week (after dh hit a weight goal). My calorie count is not too low, but I think ok, not too much I think.

At my business lunch today, another of the attendees was low-carbing it-- as he had the burger (left the bun) and switched fries for salad. And, happily, no one ordered dessert so I didn't feel like a weirdo for not ordering it either.

I've been very thirsty, and have been drinking water a lot. I'm not sure the cause. It's interesting because before Atkins, I used to drink at most 2 glasses of water a day. I wouldn't drink while eating, and in general wasn't too thirsty. However I know I was dehydrated and my skin/scalp were always very dry.
Now, I drink btwn. 7-10 a day and everything looks better, but I am thirsty. Not sure if my body is excited to finally get the liquids and wants me to keep it up. Or, perhaps it takes more water to digest the proteins? my dh doesn't drink enough and said that his kidneys were hurting and his urine was really dark. i told him he'd better drink up or we'd quit-- he's now doing 6 glasses I think.
Anyhow, just wanted to share that I too am thirsty. -Janki

Glad to know I'm not the only one, and no, I do not indulge in a lot
of salty food. I was very good to my body during Induction (driving
me to the brink of food boredom w/ all the "healthy" eats). Well,
after the Superbowl mishap (I wasn't worse for the wear afterwards) I
am back on Induction....hoping to stay on it for about 4 weeks to
experience something more than 7 lbs. of water loss!

Cheryl -- I have been cheat free since September -- for me I don't even think about eating high carb foods. I feel great, the weight is coming off (slowly, but surely), and I know if I cheat it will take me at least a week or two to just get back to where I was.
As for food -- I don't do anything fancy -- I try to have variety, but I eat great food. Lots of salads with flavorful dressings, eggs cooked in butter, tuna with mayo. Great tasting and satisfying food.
For me, all that junk just isn't worth it.

How do you that are very successful stick to this for weeks. I guess its just that I need to remember that food is fuel….not fun or parties but I cant seem to remember that when im in a sticky situation.
Hey LaJuana - I confess too! I lost my way on Superbowl Sunday and I have not found my way back yet...but I am committed to getting back on the wagon. We are not perfect and this diet is not the easiest in terms of food variety. I was at Superbowl party and there were just too many goodies besides the spinach salad and tri-tip. It's OKAY! : )
