Fresh Brother's will be having a gf- pizza tasting Saturday, July 11
from 11 am to 1 pm

Fresh Brothers is a family owned pizza place. They currently have
two locations, Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach and will be opening
a third in Marina Del Rey in the Fall. The Marina del Rey one will
be too much of a temptation for me, but looking forward to it!

The gf-tasting will be held in the Redondo Beach location:

407 North PCH, RB, CA 90277 (Next to Whole Foods)
310-374-5678

Debbie says, "We'll be sampling our gf-pizzas, salads, wings and
brownies!

Thanks so much!

My cell is 310-497-6818 don't hesitate to call with questions, etc.

Debbie"

Hope to see you there,

A friend of mine is an amazing chef and she does in-home cooking demonstrations.
She has masters degrees in nutrition and public health, and she puts out a
newsletter every month on healthy cooking. She said she would love to do a
gluten-free cooking demonstration for the group. We could have it at my house
and I could also do a quick lesson on making GF desserts.

Let me know if you're interested. There's a fee for the class, but you get to
sample everything, sip on wine, and take home the recipes.

Thanks!

As far as potato chips are concerned, most are gluten-free, but some
are not, so we check our labels. We need to be suspicious of added
seasonings. Generally, if it has a long list of ingredients, I don't
bother reading the back of the package, because it probably has
something which isn't good for anyone. Potato Chips are very
addictive, love them!

As far as hot dogs are concerned, we need to check the labels. The
casing can be made with gluten, so we need to make sure it read
gluten-free or see that the hot dog doesn't have the added gluten
ingredients. I check out bacon too.

We really can't take anything for granted, we need to check labels,
although our newer laws are making it easier for us.

Good idea Joelle, I think I will connect with her. Whomever we pick
it won't be free, so we will need to get the best rate.

Hi all,

Another idea is Surfa's in Culver City. They have had a few gf cooking classes
already but I have never been able to go. They must have chef's that specialize
in gf cooking. Either way I would be interested in whatever you all decide.

Thanks!

Suzzane:

My partner and I (and probably a friend of mine who has CD as well) would be
extremely interested in a GF cooking class! Maybe even something once a month?
Not sure about anyone else, but preferably on the weekends for us....

Beyond bringing a group with me, it would be great to put faces to the names I
see on this list!!!

It sounds like you have a lot of good leads on sources, but please let me know
if you need any help in coordinating the even or set up or whatever else, please
let me know... I'd be glad to help out in anyway I can.

This is a great idea....

Thanks much.

I talked with a cooking school in Manhattan Beach about gluten-free cooking
classes a couple of years ago, exactly when is a fog to me.  They said they
would hold gf cooking classes for us.  I am sure Sur La Table will set some us
too.

Are you interested in us setting up some courses? I can ask around and
coordinate.

The other alternative:  I was checking the internet just now and there are lots
of gluten-free cooking menu's there, free of charge.  Then there is that lady
that used to send daily or weekly recipes, but there up until recently there is
to be a charge.  There is a charge to be part of the gluten-recipe club.

Tell me what you think and if you would like something to be set-up.  Let me
know if you would like a one time event or a series.

As gluten-free is becoming a fad now, there will probably be more gluten-free
cooking classes.

baking class to teach me the tips and tricks of working with the grains

(Quinoa, Teff, Amaranth, etc.) that are popular in GF cooking (without

having to do all of the trial and error myself). Does anyone know of any

such classes? Thanks!

having to do all of the trial and error myself). Does anyone know of any
such classes? Thanks!
Elizabeth

A new chain of supermarkets are opening around the southland. The website is:

http://www.henrysmarkets.com/h/home/

If you click on health you will find the gluten free page. There is lots of
information and recipes.

Put in your zip code to find locations near you.

I attended the gluten free tour at the Monrovia location yesterday given by
Janet Little CN, Henry's nutritionist. She handed out great information and
showed gluten free products throughout the store. Afterwards they had some
gluten free snacks for the group to try.

They expect another store opening in Burbank in September when she will give the
same kind of tour.

There are many who are gluten-intolerant who also get a reaction from
canola oil.  So it could be the canola oil in the popcorn.

Copying this from the new thread about Landmark so everyone sees it :)

Hey all - more clarification via my brother.

Be sure to ask the rep about the "popping oil seasoning" as well.

He noted that yes, the oil itself, the corn itself, and the topping you put
on afterwards are usually GF and safe. But the way the corn is made (he
says it's at done this way at all the big chains) is they put a scoop of
kernels, a scoop of oil, and then a scoop of the oil seasoning into the
popper. That seasoning is what gives the corn some of its color and salty
taste. The Loew's description said nothing about the oil seasoning and
neither does Landmark.

I worry it may be one of those things where if you don't know about it and
don't ask about it, they may not tell you it's in there.

I was just on the phone with my brother and he pulled out the box of
seasoning to read it to me, and his description was, "Ok, it's salt... and
then it gets interesting." Lots of chemicals, colorings, and 'flavorings',
and when he called the reps they said they could not say it's GF.

So again, you might want to ask them about that seasoning specifically, and
if they can't tell you what's in it, they can probably give you the phone
number of the manufacturer to call them yourself.

(btw - if you do ask, please don't forward this email with my brother's
statements to anyone. My brother and I have a pretty unique last name, and I
don't want him to get in trouble for sharing this with us)

Hey all - my brother corrected me that it's the 'seasoning that goes with
the popping oil' that had gluten, so if a chain doesn't season their oil
they could be safe. But most chains *do* season the oil in some way. He
also says he hasn't checked for a GF seasoning in a couple of years so it's
totally possible that even some chains that use seasoning are safe now.

He's going to get the lastest info and see if he can find one for his
theater, which will be awesome when I go to visit! :)

So I take back my 'almost guarantee' about theater popcorn. :) But still
do your due diligence - there's a good possibility the popcorn is not safe
so always check with the manager/chain rep directly.

I wonder... when they say 'the popping oil is canola oil' - I went to my
brother's theater and he showed me the oil box, it had about 10 other
ingredients listed besides the oil (we assumed to keep it from burning or
something).

I do think the corn and toppings tend to be safe, but I still worry about
the popping oils.

I'll send this to him and see if he can figure out what they may be using.
If it is safe, he'll be so happy!

There are many who are gluten-intolerant who also get a reaction from
canola oil. So it could be the canola oil in the popcorn.

Just talked to the concession director in NY for Landmark Theatres. He
was very honest, said he couldn't answer whether the popcorn was GF
but took my email address, said he would speak with his reps and get
back.

Hi:

Sorry to be on here again, but I think I forgot to mention the Cinamark Popcorn
was GF.... That's why I was so sure it was the soy.....

I searched very quickly for Cinamark's response so I could cut-and-paste it
here, but unfortunately can't find it. Hopefully you can trust me :)

Take Care,
David

Sorry you're feeling so sick.

Regarding the popcorn - I can almost guarantee you that movie popcorn is not
safe.  My brother (also Celiac) is general manager of a theater, and he's
searched high and low for a popping oil that does not have gluten, and he
says it doesn't exist.  It's odd that it's in the oil, not the flavorings or
anything else, but that's what he's found.

If anyone knows any different, I'm sure he'd be ecstatic to hear it and make
the change.  But for now, it's probably best to not try any theater corn.
