I think that if the blood test says you have it, you have it. But
sometimes the biopsy can be inconclusive. However I'm not a doctor.
We are going to have a meeting on Sunday, May 7th. There will be a
doctor and nutritionist here that hopefully can help us out on these
issues
On that same note..I was told I had it from a blood
test, then had a biopsy and I was told I didn't have
it. But I did have an ulcer. I have since avoided
most food with gluten and feel much better. But I've
always wondered, is there ever an inconclusive biopsy?

A couple of questions for you guys:
Anyone know of a good gluten free morning sausage?
How about finding non-contaminated oatmeal from some special place?
Also is there directions using this site, i.e. how to get to links, archives,
or whatever?
Finally; would the maggiano's event coordinator let me know who you are
(Suzanne?) I need to plan a ROCK event there (I will keep you all posted on
date.)
Thanks!!

Hrm. Any word on Twinnings English Breakfast? I had that yesterday, and got
sick about three hours later, although I was feeling a little sick before I
had the tea. Come to think of it, that's why I had the tea.
Anyway, I think I'm still detoxing, or whatever.
The good news is so far today I'm feeling fine, so maybe last night was just
a hiccup.

Subject: [Los_Angeles_Celiac] GF tea
Hello again,
Here's more on Jane Pannor's research for really clean (GF) tea and some
things about teas I learned this month.
Jane's interest in organic tea led her to "Choice" brand organic tea,
distributed by "Mountain People." It is sold in bulk, but "Choice" also
makes gluten-free tea bags if you want to buy the bags and bag your own tea.
(NB: Some tea bags have been found to be dusted with flour, thus the close
scrutiny on Jane's part.) Jane will likely get back to us with any local
sources of the tea and/or bags, but if you know of local sources of very GF
tea/bags, please write in!
Coincidentally, I recently checked on my two favorite brands: Traditional
Medicinals and Celestial Seasonings. Their teas and bags are GF, except for
the teas that obviously contain barley, etc. in the ingredient list.
When Celestial Seasonings called me back I was given a long list of non-GF
teas to avoid:
Please AVOID the following Celestial Seasonings teas:
Almond Sunset, Canadian Vanilla Maple, Detox AM, Echinacea (the pink box,
not Echinacea Complete Care), English Toffee, Gingerbread Spice, Ginseng
Energy, Rostaroma, and the discontinued Menopause Nights. At holiday time,
AVOID their Sugar Plum Spice and Vanilla Hazelnut.
I recently requested the free Clan Thompson mini list sample and received
the email update on teas pasted below. Interesting how the Celestial
Seasonings "not GF" list dictated to me over the phone varies a little bit
from the list below with regard to the Echinaceas and Ginger Spice. It's
possible that more than one of the tea names I was given are no longer on
the shelves.
It pays to double check!
Wishing you safe sipping,
Mary

I was assured several months ago by both Bigelow and Stash that their decaf earl
grey teas were GF. I also called Celestial Seasonings just to check on
peppermint and sleepytime, and both were okay, but they did say that some were
not.

I too enjoyed myself and thought the pasta was good, I had been avoiding pasta
with corn meal and found that I like it better than the rice pasta. Hope to do

Thanks! Do you have location info? Always eager to try new things!
-Bon.
I went to Juiano's yesterday for lunch. It is very expensive. I bought a special
drink for $5 had a "fussed over" entry and a desert, it came to nearly $40. It
was very good. I am usually a fast eater, but I ate that very slow because I
wanted the taste to last. I enjoyed it very much. That was the good, now for the
bad. In addition to celiac, I have a bad candida problem I can not shake. I
think that is why I had a bad reaction. I spent an hour in the bathroom and the
rest of the afternoon in bed. Like I said I do not feel it was a gluten problem.
By the way, they do have toddlers chairs.

Dear Heather,
If you like pineapple fried rice, I believe Thai Dishes (Wilshire Blvd near
19th) delivers. I always remind them that I'm "allergic" to soy sauce and
the cooking tools have to be clean. There' isn't much soy sauce in the place
to begin with.
On our website, there's a local dining guide that includes phone numbers.
See if Monte Alban delivers. I once had Habayit cater a business lunch for
my (Kosher) boss. She loved it and I got to eat in a group!
I'll upload my Thai dining guidelines on our website as an additional
resource.
Best wishes,
Mary

Hi Cheryl,
Actually there was another in addition to yours. This is my first time at
setting up a yahoo group, but the way it looks to me is that only those with a
yahoo membership can get access to all the features. If there is somebody that
has a none yahoo email address that can see the previous messages, I would like
to hear from them.
This is my suggested solution for those of you that want your messages to come
to a none email address, but also want access to all the features on the web
page.
Get a free yahoo email address. Then subscribe to this group with that email
address in addition to your current one. When you subscribe with the yahoo
address, they will ask you if you want individual emails, a digest at the end of
the day or no emails. Pick the no emails, then you will be able to have your
cake and eat it too (of course the cake is gf). You will get the emails in your
non email address and you can use all the features of the web page.
If you have any poblems, let me know.

Yes, I know of a place. My friend has food delivered from Raw
Evolution in Santa Monica. I believe it is on Main Street. I heard
that the owner also has Celiac Disease.
BBQ sauce "Sweet Baby Ray's" is gluten free. My experience is all condiments
have to be checked.

Hi everyone!
Spoke with member Jane Pannor this week. She's been researching safe sources of
sea vegetables and organic tea. Jane spoke with the folks who make "Sound" brand
sea vegetables which she buys at Cooportunity in Santa Monica. They verified the
safety of their products for celiacs.
[But those of you with dermatitis herpetiformus (DH), please remember that sea
vegetables contain iodine, something your doctor has probably advised you to
avoid.]
I'll write a separate post about Jane's research on organic tea.
Cheers,
Mary

Just thought everyone would like to know that around this time the
Kosher bakeries sell cakes that are only made with Potatoe starch for
the Jewish holiday of Passover. This means all the cakes and cookies
are gluten free and most are also dairy free. The key word when you
ask at the bakery is "are these non-gebrocks" - this means no flour
has been used at all
There are bakeries in the Fairfax and the Pico/Robertson area.
Check out Schwartz,(Robertson and Pico) Elat Bakery (Glenville and
Pico) and Delice Bakery (La Cienega and Pico)
Enjoy
Dear friends,
I'll occasionally remind us all on how to keep our posts pertinent and
easy-to-read. We're ALL new to this discussion group, so please bear with this
message:
Reply Procedure:
If you receive individual posts and reply to one, please scroll down and delete
the parts of the original message that we don't need to see again. If you reply
to your Digest, you'll need to do A Lot of snipping--and change your reply's
Subject line. Thanks!
We're a Local Group:
We have a local forum because we have local issues to discuss and local ideas to
share. Think about your LA Celiac group when you find a local source of GF
ingredients, foods, and medical advice. And when you'd like to make a group
mail-order or have a get-together. If you learn something Locally pertinent from
other discussion groups, feel free to share it!
For Broader Topics:
Check out the links and handouts on our group's website and please remind each
other of what is there! If you've been in other celiac discussion groups, you
know that "Healthy GF Food" might be considered a pertinent general topic for
our local discussion group. ;-)
The Newbie & Research Exceptions:
We welcome ALL kinds of gluten-related questions from newly diagnosed celiacs
and celiac family members. Experienced celiacs with greater web experience and
GF book collections are encouraged to do some research before posting a general
question. Then, please post what you've learned to the group. Thanks!
Global Discussion Exception:
If there are gaps in the wider knowledge base, by all means, let's discuss them
here! Right here in LA, we have the brightest, web-friendliest, best-read bunch
of celiacs on the Planet!
My warmest wishes to you all,
Mary Courtney

Dear Group Members,
I've just changed our front-page photo to a small one of some of our group
members. We'd like to feature member's faces or food creations on a rotating
basis to keep the website inviting.
Please feel free to add photos to our group website, by clicking on Photos and
starting your own Album. You don't have to put your last name on your Album.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Los_Angeles_Celiac/
If you put your own photo as the first page, we'll have a lovely collection of
member's smiling faces. Feel free to upload snaps of gluten-free foods you have
made, or gluten-free meals/treats you've had, here or in your travels.
Looking forward to seeing you on our website!
Take good care,
Mary Courtney

Jodi,
Because I avoid grain alcohol, I don't buy liquid extracts unless they are
labeled gluten-free. I use Authentic Food's powdered GF vanilla. (Follow the
substitution directions on the jar.) I've bought it at Co-opportunity Market
before and it lasts me for years.
Best wishes,
Mary

Verified Information on Gluten Content

This Month's Tip: Use squeeze bottles for things like ketchup,
mustard, and even mayonnaise. It helps to prevent cross contamination
if you're sharing a kitchen with someone who's not on a gluten free diet.

My current favorite type of snack bar is Boomi Bars. If anyone has found them in
stores locally, please let me know. I found them on sale at:

where you can order one of each to find out which you like best. (On the Boomi
Bar website they only sell them by the case.)
