Hope everybody is having a happy holiday. Here’s a question
for the “group mind.” Has anyone else experienced or heard of iron
deficiency
anemia occurring while on a gluten free diet and/or in the absence of other
vitamin deficiencies or malabsorption?
This is not an academic question. I was recently diagnosed
with an iron deficiency anemia. My B12 level was borderline low but there were
no other vitamin or mineral deficiencies. I’ve been gluten free; have a good,
balanced diet; and frequently eat meat and other iron rich foods. (I don’t
take
vitamin supplements.)
I know that iron deficiency anemia is common in undiagnosed
celiac disease, and frequently is how the diagnosis is made. But I don’t know
whether
it can recur after someone is gluten free or whether it can appear in the
absence of other deficiencies.
Anyone have any information or ideas?
Richard
