Many factors may interfere with bonding and attachment between an infant and his primary caregiver. Some of these factors even occur prenatally. Parenting an unattached or poorly attached child can be very difficult. It can be especially confusing when the child is under the age of 6 years old. Children this age have fewer language and processing skills. Parents often question what techniques will work with this age group, and wonder how much their child really understands? This group began as a resource for parents of young children with attachment problems, but it has expanded to include families with children of all ages. We discuss all possible approaches to parenting children with attachment problems, with no specific emphasis on any one technique. This group consists primarily of families parenting children with moderate to severe attachment difficulties. Our sister list, ATN_Parents, is for families whose children are on the milder end of the attachment continuum, or for families who are new to attachment parenting or who are not certain if their child has attachment issues.
