I am working on a case where a gentleman received a kidney from a
donor with multiple medical problems. Doing research has revealed
that due to the lack of donor kidneys, guidelines have become more
lax in using organs from donors which might not have been used
before. This man claims that he was not advised that the donor had
medical problems. Now that he is in the middle of rejecting the
kidney, he wants to know why he wasn't informed about the donor's
problems.
Is there anyone out there familiar with pre-screening and infiormed
consents about transplants and donor issues? Is there a place to go
to re: how much a recipient should be told, allowing him the
opportunity to refuse the organ?
I have found some articles that allude to the fact that the
receipient should be told, but I'd like to see some standards.
Something else that I read makes me wonder if there are no universal
standards, but that each donation organization/facility determines
their own. Scary....
Any help would be appreciated.
