Hi Sue,
I am Daunette, and I have a 7 year old boy with LKS. He was
diagnosed at at 3. Learning is a struggle for him too but he has
learned to read almost on grade level. He does OK with math, just a
little below grade level. Communication is still tough for him since
he has both receptive and expressive issues. Each child with LKS is
different. This is a spectrum disorder wherein children are affected
differently. Keep hope alive. Read to your child. Be gentle and
patient. Your child may not have speech but emotions are intact. If
your child is oppostitional I would reccommend the book "easy to
love, difficult to discipline" by Becky Bailey. It helped me gain
some objective insight into my son. I also now have a perfectly
reasonable 3 year old as a result of using suggestions from the
book.
As for your fears, this is not the end of the road. search the
internet for information on LKS or acquired epileptic aphasia. Get
involved in school. Learn about the IEP process and special
education rights. Trust your gut. With patience, knowledge, and
perseverance your child's potential is unlimited.
email me with your # if you'd like to talk.
Good luck, God bless you
