good to hear from a few people! thanks. sounds like a few people are busy with laughing activities. sorry to hear about all the flooding. It seems to be affecting many people in many places. I am sure it is hard to stay positive for many people when their homes are destroyed and things are such a mess. I know it would be hard for me. I guess we all just have to keep working to encourage one another and help each other. teresa

Hi Teresa and Laughter Leaders! Good to hear that you are laughing. My children's video, Laughter Friends, will be available at Amazon again soon. The good news is that they are selling out so fast they can't keep them in stock. Amazon carries so many items that they only order 2 at a time in most cases. But I prefer if you order directly from me. I still have plenty in stock for now. You can order with paypal at the www.laughterfriends .com site or mail me a check at PO Box 11, Marquette, IA 52158. You can get them at 40% off if you order 10--then you can resell them at full retail price at laughter events.
In other good news, Laugh Your Way There: A Laughter Yoga Workout for Commuters is now completed. I'll be ordering the replications this week, which means you can order them by the end of June. This CD will be a fun cominationf of laughter exercises, deep breathing, happy chants and
gibberish speaking. It is fun for use in your car or just about anywhere. Shortly it will also be available for download at iTunes. Yay!

Hey, guess what? I have been invited to present a mini-session for the
Talent Show at the Deaconess Regular Annual Meeting in Portland, OR
next week!!! I'll be introducing Laughter Yoga to several hundred
women from all over the United States, and some overseas sisters, too!
Can you tell I'm excited?????
I'd like to ask a favor -- with all the flooding and stuff going on
here in Decorah, I don't have time to put together any handouts. Do
any of you have some already prepared material I could use? Proper
credit will be cheerfully given, of course. Or, suggestions of what
has been most helpful to you in your presentations. Thanks for any
help at all! I leave next MONDAY -- assuming I can get to Cedar Rapids
and the planes are OK....
I have a Laughter Yoga church service set for June 29. The music will
include "I Love to Laugh," and "Make'em Laugh" (from the movie (singin
in the rain). We have a number of Laughter readings from various
sources, and our closing reading is from Isaiah. We will have a
laughter greeting to each other, and a laughter offeratory (the joy of
giving!)
Coming up this month I am presenting Laughter Yoga to a management team
where I work that plans the wellness activities for employees. I
practiced my presentation on my family and they really loved it!
I've gotten a few wigs and silly hats from Oriental Trading--I can't
wait to get started sharing laughter in my community!
Ann Marie
Hey, Decorah is flooding! Kinda hard to smile about that, but there have been no injuries, so far. Keep us in your prayers!

Also, we've welcomed 20 new graduates into the Iowa Laughter Yoga family! Yay!
We had a
wonderful seminar on Friday and Saturday in Waterloo. Hopefully, these new
grads will
become members of this group so we can all keep in touch.
Have a laughing day!!
Warmly,
Laura
Sure was fun to see the photos. I hope everyone is rested up by now. I enjoyed the weekend a lot, but had a hard time getting back into the swing of things on Monday. Work just didn't seem fun! I am thankful for all the good times and the ability to share amongst all of us that really did not know each other.....we are all amazing! I have been working on the meditations that James taught us Sunday am. That has been a nice addition to the laughter yoga! teresa missmurphy55 <missmurphy55@...> wrote:

Hi Laughter Friends,
Just wanted to let you know that I've posted some pictures of the April 4-6
Retreat at the
Yahoo Group page so check them out and add your own!
Laughingly,
Laura
A warm hello to those gathered at Laura's laughter leader training
at
Sugar Creek Bible Camp. Great to get home, but some things about our
weekend I'm missing already. What a warm, intimate learning situation,
and a wonderfully unusual experience.
"Very good, very good, yah"
Teresa and I talked on the way home and have decided to launch our now
certified laughter club this Wednesday. We'll keep you posted.
On the way home, we did stop at Laura's source-for-all-things in
Lansing, and got home with big bags that included lots of flying
monkeys and hand mirrors.

Hi Laughing Buds,
I just sent off some answers to questions by a reporter for the Evangelical
Lutheran
Church news service. Since I put so much thought into my answers and I doubt he
will
have space to use that much, I thought I would share them with you. Hopefully
these
reflections will be inspirational to you.
How many people are in your laughter club?
The number varies as we don't require membership. It is totally free, open to
the public
and meets in a community center rather than our church building. There are
about 15
core laughers that never miss a meeting. Various other people pop in from time
to time,
from from as far as an hour away.
How often does it meet?
It meets a half hour every week. We just celebrated a year of meeting weekly.
It began
January 2007.
Laughing people obviously seem happy; what makes you think they're healthy or
healthier
than without the laughing?
In Proverbs 17:22, it says "A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a downcast
spirit dries
up the bones." Gelatologists (scientists who study laughter) are now proving
this ancient
wisdom to be true. These studies have shown that when we laugh, there is an
actual
chemical change in our bodies that helps to ease pain, release stress, boost
immunity,
strengthen the cardiovascular system and improve overall sense of well-being
among
other things. Laughter is a powerful, healing form of exercise.
There are even bigger health implications to laughing regularly, which are just
being
uncovered. Nearly 2000 years ago, the physician Galen stated that cheerful
people were
less likely to get cancer than those ones who were depressed (Simonton 1978).
John
Steinbeck once wrote: "A sad soul can kill you quicker, far quicker, than a
germ."
Laughter's ability to be a pain reliever and its ability to fight tumorous cells
have added an
exciting new area of research to cancer. Some of the research done by O. Carl
Simonton,
M.D. and Stephanie Matthews-Simonton (1978), leads us to believe that a person's
emotional status does indeed effect their likelihood of getting or overcoming
cancer.
Perhaps, if people would start relieving their stress through laughter before
they get
cancer, there might be a reduction in the number of cancer patients altogether.
Presently,
there are hospitals hiring laughter yoga workers to laugh with patients as they
are
receiving chemotherapy. It helps them bounce back more quickly from the side
effects of
the treatment and helps them maintain a positive attitude.
What does laughing have to do with the gospel of Jesus Christ?
Jesus Christ was a healer. He was ever about the business of restoring people
to physical
and emotional wellness. As followers of Christ, we can also promote such
wellness
through laughter. It is a total natural health booster, which can benefit all
kinds of people
regardless of their physical fitness.
The other thing that I've observed about the effect of laughter yoga is that it
has increased
our love. Unconditional laughter leads to unconditional love. When we laugh
for no
reason, we love for no reason. Of course, as Christians, we do have a reason to
love—
Christ commanded it. But it is difficult to convince ourselves to do this when
the people
we are trying to love are strangers, enemies, or just plain annoying. Our minds
get in the
way and tell us it doesn't make sense to love the unlovable.
In laughter yoga exercises, however, we put our rational minds on the shelf and
engage
our creative minds in play. In this state of being, things don't have to make
sense. We can
laugh without needing anyone to crack a joke. We laugh simply because it feels
good and
our bodies like it. And as we connect with others in this senseless laughter,
we enjoy them
and find our love for them naturally growing. One of the laughter exercises we
invented is
called the "I love you laughter". We walk around making the sign for "I love
you" and gently
laughing to one another. This value-based exercise reminds us that we are
cultivating
compassion through laughter.
The bottom line, for me personally, is that the more I laugh with people, the
more I love
them. And now that I've discovered this, I have come to view laughter yoga as a
spiritual
discipline that very beneficial. As I engage in this discipline, I become more
Christlike, I
see the fruits of the Spirit manifesting in my life.
People may look at my life and think it has become overrun with silliness. This
claim
would be hard to refute: I'm out giving laughter lectures and leading laughter
yoga
sessions constantly, people on the street greet me with a hearty chortle, I have
no shame
about sticking my tongue out at other adults in public, sometimes I dress up in
outrageous costumes to preach my sermons, and I love to laugh for no reason. To
the
outsider these things seem to have no place in the life of an ordained minister,
a
traditionally serious profession. But I believe that the practice of laughter
yoga has made
me a better minister, a more connected and empathetic minister, one that spreads
joy
indiscriminately.
To be Christian means to believe that life has triumphed over death. We are
called to live
in that reality—to the live a resurrected life in the here and now. And when we
do, we
trust God so implicitly that we can laugh in the face of adversity. We can dwell
in the joy of
the Lord!
Sue's computer isn't letting her post here at our forum (ha ha ha) so I am
posting it for
her...
Hi Laura,
I loved your "plant". I think it is amazing how wonderful laughter is for some
and others I
seem to have to push to keep going and they look at me like I have lost my mind!
Yet they
say they feel so much better - weird!
The laughter club is going great and we meet on every Thursday afternoon. We are
are
having a blast. I did a Homemakers group last night with about 10 people -2 on
oxygen,
one with pneumonia, and one suffering badly with cancer and I really was afraid
of the
breathing techniques with the people on oxygen. Do you modify them? I did
really simple
exercises mainly because I was afraid of pushing them and having someone
collapse on
me! What a chicken, hohohahaha!!!
I still can not post a message on the yahoo group site and Jim always gets the
e-mails so
what is screwy with my computer is beyond me. I will have our computer guru
check it out
the next time he is home but that might be awhile!
How is the sign up going for the next Ferryville class?
Laughing every day,
Sue
PS. The message I tried to post was about your article and picture - both were
wonderful!
LAURA'S NOTE:
In response to Sue's question about doing laughter yoga with people on oxygen, I
am not
experienced in this area. Helping these folks breathe deeper should be
especially helpful.
I would advise that you keep with the simple breathing exercises and remind them
to
ONLY do what feels comfortable. I just got a copy of "Laughter for Seniors" by
Allan
O'Meara. It is a 2 DVD set available at www.laughteryoga.org. It is a great
resource. Allan
is so passionate about working with geriatric patients and so his film is very
inspiring. Ho
ho ha ha ha!
Hi Laughter Friends,
Just wanted to share with you a funny story that happened yesterday. I was
doing a
laughter program at a regional women's gathering. At the end, as I was taking
questions,
an elderly woman raised her hand and said, "I have sciatica pain in my hip that
goes all the
way down my leg," she gestured emphatically. Continuing, she declared, "I take
a lot of
pain medication and nothing helps. I have pain ALL the time."
"How does it feel now?" I asked.
"Well," she paused, "it feels pretty good!"
Everyone errupted into a celebratory "Very Good! Very Good! Yay!" and applause.
And no, I didn't hire her as a plant. Ha ha ha! I encouraged her to try
treating her pain at
home with laughter. Norman Cousins found 10 minutes of laughing would keep him
pain
free for 2 hours.
So this is just a little reminder that laughter REALLY works!
Laughingly,
Laura
You know, I hadn't really thought about kids (under 12) when I was
making it, not as any kind of target. but I listened to it again
tonight with that in mind, and most of it would be great with little
kids.
The "Powers of Two" is actually a great exercise for kids. You could
play them the song and then ask them 2 questions.... What is the
pattern, and which "ee"'s were mistakes. Then the kids can do it
themselves, and see how far they can go.
It could just as well be powers of 10. I wanted a song with just to
syllables, which would mean in some language just "1" and "0". Then I
wanted to count by powers of two, in binary. But the powers of any
number system ends up being the same, thus...
1
10
100
1000
Does that seem like a fun game?
I tried to do different kinds of sounds. The song where I do a lot of
Chaka-Chaka is pretty kid-friendly. (Trk 6).
Thank you for the great interest and ideas!
By the way, I think laughing is helping to keep me clear enough to be
able to smell. very good, very good, Yeah!

What a great picture of you. The cellphone did you justice. And, as
an aside (HA, HA) I enjoyed the article as well...

Is the April 4-6th course just a refresher or will there be new students there? I have someone I'd love to introduce to this practice, and she even lives near the camp.

Oh, very good, very good, Yaaaaaay! And I, too, love the picture.
My mom died unexpectedly on Monday, March 3rd. On my flight down to Texas, I was -- get this -- iced in at the Dallas-Ft. Worth airport! Had to spend the night on a cot at the airport, and hopefully be able to fly out the next day. Other than being upset about my mom, you know what my first thought was? "Hmmm, I wonder if I can gather enough people to do a Laughter Yoga session?" It didn't pan out, but I was able to keep up the spirits and lower the frustration level of several ladies. We had a regular slumber party on our cots.
Hi Laughter Friends,
Just wanted to share a new article with you. It is a really short piece I wrote for the wellness
program of the Lutheran Church Board of Pensions. I had submitted a studio shot from my
web site but they wanted a snapshot looking picture so it would match with the other
"wellness voices." So I gave them a pic I had taken of myself with my cell phone while driving
down highway in my Miata and they loved it. :)
