Unfortunately prescription Vitamin D is D2 which is much less effective than D3 in raising your levels. Ironic that supplies over the internet or your food store are more effective than what the doctor can give you.

Thanks guys so much for the info on vitamin D - My PCF put me on 1,000 IU day a year ago Jan. - Saw her in Feb. and she said she would do blood work on my next visit. Hopefully my level will be up, but I have a feeling it's not. If it's not, I will talk to her about doing the "real" vitamin D by prescription or should I just do the over the counter kind.

Do you all think it would be OK to up my over the counter dose to 1,500 before I go back to my doc? I'm taking 3.5 LDN nightly. I think it helps with the fatigue, but I see no other benefits. Have been taking it about a year and a half now.

This is a great idea. I have nutrition issues also as I had gastric bypass surgery ten years ago, so I've been studying up a lot on this. Even the average person isn't getting enough nutrition through their food. So first I would recommend a good supplement, the best quality you can afford. Then, I would double the amount for a week or two, just until the effects can start to be felt. When my kids were little, I would double their vitamins when they were sick and rarely had to take them to the dr to be put on antibiotics.

Then there is the juicing. Raw vegetables and fruits contain most of the nutrients we need and in a way that is absorbed naturally. Remember Jack LaLane. He's in his 90's now and is still doing great, but when he was 18 he was so malnourished he nearly died. Then he started juicing raw vegetables and fruits. Now I juice, too. However, I can't afford to buy a juicer (I've been on disability because of my Fibromyalgia) , so what I do is blend everything in my blender (with a cup of water) and then line a bowl with a cloth and pour the contents into it. Then I draw up the cloth and squeeze the juice out. A little more work but turns out fine. I keep some over ice in front of me all day long. Most things I don't bother to peel or remove the small seeds. Like pears or apples. I toss in whole strawberries, stems and all. I do peel bananas and oranges, but that's because they're pretty bitter.

Start with simple things like orange/banana/ pineapple/ spinach. Or carrots/apples/ pears. Or sweet potato/orange/ cinnamon. Even tomato/celery/ cucumber. As you get used to the various tastes branch out into stronger flavored items. Another thing I've done is check out the pasteurized juices they now have at the stores. They are very expensive, but I read the labels for the ingredients and make my own at home. I also add protein powder occasionally or you can make a smoothie by just blending the ingredients with water and adding ice. I've been on LDN now for over two months and I've noticed an amazing difference. However, I've also been trying to eat as healthy as I can along with it. I've had several people comment to me lately how good I look and I just turned 65.

Wishing you and your wife well.

My smoothies consist of fruit and veg, whatever you have in the house.   A typical one for me is raspberries, strawberries, a banana, apple and some broccoli, carrots  and a bit of cabbage, then a couple of tablespoons of whey......

Hi Helmut,

This site discusses the side effects normally associated with LDN and how to cope with some of them:

http://tinyurl.com/ldn-side-effects

The Megace should increase your wife's appetite.

In addition, I would suggest light, frequent, and nourishing meals--in addition to a full complement of vitamins, minerals, and other food supplements.

Best regards,

Helmut, get some whey and mix it in smoothies, get the pure whey  - you don't want one with additives etc.  Also  use eggs, I eat two every day, this has kept my weight steady.....

The two tests you need are 25(OH)D and your blood calcium, but to tell you the truth, it sounds to me that you doc is not tuned into this new research and theory. My Doc is a resident and is all over this. I talked to the blood letter and she said he opened every ones eyes in the clinic and was helping many people with their chronic pain. He put me on 10,000iu and my 25(OH)D was 77ng/mnl from 70 last Feb.after four months of 10,000iu.

The experts say D-2, that is the script D, is worthless stay D-3 but also by age 30 you need 3,000 iu a day if you are healthy probably more if you have one of the deficient conditions. I doubt very seriously that 1000iu would raise your level much.

Go to the D counciil page and read to understand this theory, it is the real deal, and go to vitamind3world there is a good write up there. I already posted the link, http://www.sunarc.org/Embry-_JOM_Vit_D-1.pdf

CHER YOU MIGHT NOT SEE ANY IMPROVEMENT FROM LDN BUT IN FACT IT COULD BE SLOWING DOWN YOUR MS AND THATS SOMETHING YOU WILL NOT SEE HAVE YOU HAD A RECENT MRI TO SEE IF YOU GOT ANY NEW LESIONS? AND FOR THE VITD3 YOU CAN ORDER IT FROM BIO-TECH PHARM. THEY CARRY DIFFERENT IUS YOU WILL HAVE TO ASK YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT UPING THE VITD3 HIGHER,NANCY
YOU SHOULD HAVE A BLOOD TEST TO CHECK YOUR LEVEL

Hi Char,

I would suggest you get at least the daily dose of vitamin D I myself am taking
as discussed in this site:

I must have misread the description - "a synthetic derivative of a naturally occurring steroid hormone, progesterone" . Sorry.

Hi,

You might want to check up on the drug yourself at

http://www.rxlist. com/megace- drug.htm#

and compare to Marinol which does not apparently have carcinogenic properties.

http://www.rxlist. com/marinol- drug.htm

It's best to be very pro-active when fighting cancer. Check out every prescription and question the doctor's orders. They know what they know
and sometimes that is limited. If you have concerns they don't address you must bring those concerns up to them.

I wish you and your wife the very best outcome,

I must have misread the description - "a synthetic derivative of a naturally occurring steroid hormone, progesterone" . Sorry.

Here is a 27 page study of MS and vitamin D. LDN is worth pusuing and contiueing. But D is the Key there is little doubt. This explains the autoimmune repose to some degree.

Yes, synthetic which has been proven to cause cancer.

Not something I would give someone who has cancer.

Thanks Julia, but I can't afford to buy a bunch of supplements because I am on a limited income. If I could afford them I would buy them rather then take the other meds.

I also take Klonopin (tremors, pain, spasticity) , Darvocet and Methocarbamol (Muscle Relaxer).

Crystal, I have just "Googled" these and I do not like the look of them, especially when in use with a body that is weakened by MS. You should research some alternatives. I have with great success. There is Vit B6, Hemp Oil, Calcium/ Magnesium to stop spasms.

Hi Nancy

I eat fresh garlic but I think garlic pills would be better. I make my own garlic bread and would have 2 or 3 cloves of fresh garlic on it. Luckily the hole family likes garlic, on a Friday night I would even eat a few cloves while I am cooking the dinner . ha ha just cant go out the next day. I don't have MS I am here for my wife who has stage 4 lung cancer and is doing very well on LDN

Regards

John

Hi Catherine

As you saw on the database there is a few people there doing very well on LDN for RA. I had RA from the child hood till I was 30 in every joint, I took lots of garlic and it vanished. so if it comes back in a few years it will be lots of garlic and LDN for me

Best of luck
John

Hi,
I'm brand new to this site. I have Rheumatoid arthritis in every joint and with out prednisone I'm incapacitated. I'm 52 and this is not how I want to continue. I do not want to take the medications prescribed because of the detrimental effects on my body. Has anyone had success with LDN and RA. My Dr. will prescribe it for me. I just want some feedback. How much do I start with etc.
Thankyou so much
Catherine

Where do you see Megace classified as a steroid?

According to the 2008 edition of the "Nurses Drug Handbook," Megace is
classified as a Progestin, one of the female sex hormones.

It is a steroid and probably should not be used with LDN. There are other
appetite stimulants which would be more appropriate: Marinol is one which
does not have any steroid. And it targets the cannabinoid receptors.
